No, Costas did NOT say that. What he said, exactly, was that "had there not been a gun involved <the two parties> might still be alive".
What he meant by that was that the use of a firearm is virtually deadly. The act of killing someone by other, manual, means gives pause to the would-be killer to think about what he/she is doing.
