NBC Sports 1510...?

Pretty sad, when a well-known network can't find better affiliates than those 10-or-so listed. 1510-Boston on the top of the list, and next on the list is WMEN in "Miami". It's signal cannot be heard in Miami at night (which is when NBC's full-time programming is), as its transmitter is 45 miles from Miami, and during the day, it puts about a 2.8 mv/m singal into Miami... quite listenable on the Interstate highways and in certain homes, but that's it.

To me, why would most stations pick up affiliation of a network if it's only providing limited nighttime/overnight programming? In the sports world, there are plenty of other full-time options. If a sports station is running mostly local programming, it probably already has an overnight/weekend affiliation with one of the more proven networks. That's not to mention that right now, you're not getting weekend programming from NBC.

I don't really get the tactic of launching only "half-baked." Again, to me, the current way that NBC Sports is set up seems like a solution looking for a problem. I just don't see the demand.

For the next month some of that night prog. from NBCSp. will be pre-empted by Red Sox in Spanish...not the best night signal (for now Bro. Stair etc on, at 2:30 this night). May expand...Anthony Pepe hints at return of DieHards show

Forget where I saw it but someone mentioned the average age of listeners to cons talk, "moderate talk", standards, sports, et al and of them, sports was the youngest. I would think it appeals to a broad demo and many desired younger listeners. Comedy, too; hence 1200's move. You wanna sell
spots for Bud or various other advertisers, do you want fans of Ingraham/Savage/Hannity etc who
trend older, or younger folks (who frankly might care more for the NFL than the elections?) If you have a moderately powerful AM (like 1510) what is likely to get more listeners for your advertisers.

So yes it's a third station doing sports and a) signal not great at night, and b) we know rep of
890, 1510 etc in past. But they're willing to go for sports and clear NBC/Dial Global's new network.
Some local shows may follow. I don't know if Santos will continue to buy time, etc, but 1510 is putting on its shoulder pads and cleats and going for a format where they might do half decently
in selling spots. It won't challenge 93.7 and 98.5 (and soon they may indeed get 850 as yet another sports outlet if they go all ESPN) but it seemed the most likely to do half decently. For now.

oh here it is: it was on the radioinsight page about NBCSports Radio affiliates. It mentions the median age of listeners to cons talk (57), moderate talk (49), sports (36 and 47), soft MOR (78) etc. Davis says: "If I owned a crappy AM station, I’d rather take a crack at sports and go after the people who haven’t turned 50 yet before signing up for a bunch of third tier political talk shows and trying to turn a buck from a geezer audience. There’s more money in beer."

I haven't noticed any postings on the demographics and percentage of English speakers in northern Finland, where WWZN's skywave signal is reported to really, umm, shine. Also, how many hours is Finland ahead of the eastern US? (Gotta be at least six hours--maybe seven; of course, the number of hours depends on whether daylight saving time is in effect either in Boston or Finland, or both.) Handled properly, WWZN could claim that the advent of NBC Sports at 1510 does not mark the end of Progressive talk at the station but, rather, merely marks the Finnish. Also, shouldn't the theme for the overnight religious programming that WWZN is currently carrying be Stairway to Heaven? Seems especially appropriate given Brother Stair's apparent fixation on Armageddon. How could they have missed that?

Yes, get it in Finland but in many towns around here, it's a challenge (splashover, distant stations, faint signal) after dark

>>the Finnish
Good pun! As was your "Stair-Master" bit. My pun: proper behavior at a convention is like one of the New England states: It's Con etiquette.
As for Brother Stair, he's a doozy all right and SOME folks are funding him (failed predictions like
Harold Camping's etc)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brother_Stair

>>In the 1990s, Brother Stair was heard on 120 stations, though by 2007 this had been reduced to 25. Broadcast expenditures of about $1 million are funded by donations from listeners. While gifts can reach about $100,000 a month, in recent years the ministry has failed to break even.

A friend of mine from Boston has lived in Bergen, Norway for years and since she is fluent in Spanish she listens to her beloved Red Sox on her bedroom radio on 1510.

There are brief airchecks of WRKO, WBZ etc. on youtube and other places, recorded over in Europe. Also I remember on an early morning getting something around 640-650 mHZ (or somewhere near there) on my clock radio--sounded like BBC from UK but not sure.

Mark does pass along that Santos will be taking on 1160 from NJ/NY area with his show, even if he goes off
in Boston (barring another station picking him up) in Nov. I mentioned the news about WWZN to Donna who asked why we needed yet another sports station (instead of one which ran pol. talk) and I talked about demos and what they feel will succeed...selling to a wide range of age groups including some younger folks, unlike pol. talk radio. For the same reason--and considering the ratings didn't pan out--CC is now running comedy instead of pol. talk on 1200.

Bob: I'd be more than a little surprised if you could prove to my satisfaction that, in 1510s case, talk about the future is anything besides window dressing for public consumption. Betcha a decent (that is, in the words of the late Norm Nathan, plush but not overly ostentatious) dinner that the ONLY considerations were who would pay the most to use the 1510 signal and whose checks were least likely to bounce.

Rather surprised Radio China International didn't approach 1510 with an offer. They can be heard here in Philly on WNWR, a 50 kW daytimer on 1540. Guessing Santos would be heard on WVNJ 1160 Oakland NJ; 20 kW-D, 2.5 kW-N, DA-2.

Oakland is right on the NY/NJ border--just south of Rockland County NY. WVNJ puts an excellent daytime signal into Westchester County (just about all of it) and, I'm sure, into Rockland as well. But the patterns are fairly narrow and it doesn't do so well in northern NJ as you travel southward--even by day (has to protect WBBR's and WLIB's 25 mV/m contours). I suspect that the night signal is competitive only in Rockland County. I don't understand why 5 kW at night is not possible. The array has four towers but only three are used at night and I would think that using all four towers at night could improve the signal in Westchester without degrading the 1160 in central ME.

Wow this thread has been read 2,229 times.
Thought I read the 1-5 am programming will be delayed till 6-10 am (and as Mark S pointed out does that mean late Fri night programming is delayed till early Mon morning?)

There must be some kind of contract and maybe 1510 has to honor it so there will be a bunch of pre-emptions if so,
but the season ends in a few weeks anyway. Would Red Sox in Sp. go elsewhere--maybe to 850 if they finally do go all ESPN (even if it's so called ESPN 24/7 there may be play by play exceptions)

And now this thread has surpassed 2,300 views. ;D

I've never seen a bilingual hybrid ESPN station. That being said, I doubt 850 would carry Spanish calls of Red Sox games if it's all-English ESPN Radio. Unless Entercom can figure out how to get listeners to "press 2 for Espanol". ::)

Unless there's a way for WWZN to get out of the contract, I'd imagine NBCSN will be interrupted for Spanish Sox PBP for the next few weeks. After that ... who knows? WESX? WLYN? WUNR? Back to WROL? Spanish-language radio is in a rather primitive state in the Boston market and there are no really good options.

That's right re: Sox in Spanish. btw the press release, seen at
http://www.bostonradiowatch.com proudly says "1510 is the Flagship station of Red Sox Beisbol" (technically they are las medias rojas, or "the Stockings Red" in literal translation) and mentions B.U. sports, and Pepe says " “Not only will we be the number one sports station on the AM dial here in Boston, but we will also be a great partner to many local businesses that can finally afford sports radio advertising,” he added.

If he assumes that WEEI (AM) will have very small numbers since most are tuned to the FM station then yes it could well be the #1 sports station on AM!

The Red Sox schedule lists 18 more weeknight night games until the season ends on October. Tonight and tomorrow the Sox start times are 10 pm, but I think it's pretty much 7 pm for rest of season as Sox face AL East teams in what will for the Sox be no doubt
meaningless games. (Maybe they can be a spoiler, as the O's were to them last yr!)
