Here's how I view this whole mess.
The problem as I see it isn't black, white, Latino, Asian, Polish, whatever. Crap comes in all colors. The underlying problem is A) Poverty - It's grown a LOT. Recently. and - pay attention - B) The corrections system in general. They've literally become free colleges, universities, hotels and restaurants for career criminals. It's literally at the very point where many kids aren't dreaming of college, career goals, family and the average good things in life. But an inevitable life of crime. Some are actually TRYING to get into prison (take the guy who robbed a bank for a dollar to get free health care.)
Like Bob Dylan said, if you got nothing, you have nothing to lose. And that's dangerous to American civilization. When you're building far more prisons than colleges, that's not good.
Even overall good, salvageable people are willing to go to extreme measures out of desperation. When they get into this system, they are taught things they would NEVER have learned outside the prison walls. They come out 100 times worse than when they came in. They even get so used to the routine inside jail system that when they get out, they find that A) They can't find a job - because of their record. Or even a place to live. In prison, they had it all. So what do they have to lose? They go back for another few years and back out they come, 200 times worse than when they came in. And here we go again.
Most gangs get their marching orders from their imprisoned leaders.
And who PAYS for THAT?
What breaks my heart is watching a non violent offender get into the system (Mandatory minimum sentences for petty drug offenses, etc). And then come out a violent offender. The person is ruined for life. Merely a disgustingly tattooed shell of their former selves.
Talk about unsustainable.
A lot of talk show hosts won't address this simple fact. Not when your stock and trade is "shock and entertain" Finding REAL solutions isn't very good for ratings. It's easier to scare people into buying guns, gold schemes and freeze dried food for the "impending, inevitable and unavoidable collapse" than find a way to do something about this
If you want to cut crime, start with the correctional system. Because it's broken beyond repair. And there's NOTHING "correctional" about it anymore......
