I just returned from the wildest goosechase I've ever been on. A friend of mine in Lewisville called me to ask if I knew of a pirate in that area on 87.9 - I said no but that freq is common for modulators in cars and the like.
He headed to Dallas to pick up me and my FIM-71 and we took off. It sounded pretty strong in Irving... getting stereo broadcast (mixed in with 93.3 audio) and actually moving the needle somewhat on the FIM-71. So we started doing a drive around the estimated perimeter (downtown irving, we though) but when we got west/southwest of that, we were hearing it stronger.... so we headed across 360, and up - then across 183. It faded in and out several times - losing stereo lock. Then we got another high signal hit at 820/183 interchange.... got stronger going towards Beech st. Then we lost it again.
I'm convinced this is not just one transmitter. There were too many strong signals in too many locations to be just one....or it's got better coverage than a class C station here does. It's spanish church stuff from what I could tell - I don't know but a dozen words in spanish. I DID hear a phone number once, 817 area code, but by the time my brain decoded 817, they'd finished the rest of the number.
They signed off at midnight... actually SIGNED OFF. Like gave a schedule for what normally happens during the day, thanked people, and signed off, then the transmitter(s) went off.
Several times while driving around we could have swore we heard "doubling" where 2 transmitters were beating against each other - other times they seemed like they were phase-canceling each other out.
So, if you happen to tune past 87.9 and get a stereo lock, remember the closest major intersection... and let me know if you wouldn't mind. Or if you know spanish and can decode their phone number faster than I can, we can reverse-look it up. They were putting callers on the air earlier but there was an awful ground loop whenever that happened.
I'm guessing its a network of churches.... all getting the same feed off satellite, and each one transmitting it to their community.
