Need signal reports for 87.9 pls

I know of 3 pirates on the air in the metroplex now that I've never reported...because they're not hurting anyone or anything.

You're obviously more experienced at this than I am. This 87.9 operation is the first pirate I've heard in DFW. I thought I had really accomplished something when I found it Saturday morning. Granted, I'm easily amused. :)

For what it's worth, I picked up 87.9 clear as a bell around 9pm yesterday on I-30 around Ferguson Rd... but around Dolphin Rd (near White Rock Creek, a low spot) it abruptly faded out, completely.

Like I told my daughter on Talk Like A Pirate day, it wouldn't be such an issue if the DFW radio spectrum weren't already packed to the gills with legitimate stations. There's no room for an "unofficial" station without stomping on someone, right?

We then agreed that for a town with so many frequencies in use, it's amazing how so few are worth listening to...

Hello...long time lurker here, just decided to register. The phone numbers at the end of the clip are 817-924-5612 and 817-924-5775. I just dialed (fluent Spanish speaker) but no one's picking up.

Much obliged! Thank you!
Interesting, one reverses to a last name of "Robinson" while the other one (totally different address) resolves to an "Elsa" for the last name. I think they're live at 7pm and 10pm, anyone fluent in Spanish brave enough to call them up and tell them you wanna bring by a check for a donation and ask them where they are? They're not broadcasting out of the transmitter location, so their studio is remote somewhere. Just don't know where.

Look what I get for not reading this board in a few days.. a great pirate hunt! Way to go radiochick.
Having read the whole thread now, I'm curious.. did you ever determine if this was just one transmitter or is it several?
I have not had a chance to tune in up here in Plano, but if I can get it here tonight I'll let you know. It seems to me that if Rob can get it in Mesquite, this thing has to be several hundred watts at least.

I too used to get the St. Marks school station when they were only running 10 watts from maybe 10-15 miles away. However, the reception was spotty at best. This pirate sounds like a much more powerful station.

I was in Plano tonight and I heard them while I was mobile. It's only one xmitter, but I'd never hunted one this tall or strong before... I'm used to finding the ones that maybe go a mile or two. Not 50 or 60 miles.

I don't speak Spanish, but I could've sworn I heard them say something about La Gran Plaza which makes sense to me since the mall is near the transmitter. I think that used to be the old Seminary South shopping center at one time.

Pictures can be found here Special thanks to Paul Boomer who was kind enough to shoot the pics and save me another trip to cowtown.

You'll see that all the rest of the antennas (save the one big loop on the side near the top) are all UHF 2way antennas of some sort. The big loop is lower band.. 50mhz range or so. The big run of coax runs all the way up the tower, so that fiberglass monopole looking thing at the top is our antenna.

Thanks again Mr Boomer for the pics! Awesome job!

You're quite welcome! One of my coworkers remarked that it will be nice to be able to use his iPod transmitter again.

Thank you for all your efforts tracking this one down, radi0chik!

Paul,

Great pictures! Thanks for shooting those for us. :)

I'll call them...it will have to wait until Monday though. I still haven't heard them despite being right in the middle of Las Colinas. I'll see if I can get better results with my trusty Eton E1 radio than with my car stereo.

i think i just had radi0chik saved as the last login with this computer, so everything is spitting out with this nick. Heh. Shows ya how long its been since I was on this board :-\

I had weak and spotty reception on and near 75 in Plano. This has all the earmarks of a lot of power on a short stick. They were not even close to KTCU strength, but making it that many miles means they are not your average pirate.

And I stand corrected. I heard a lot of modulators on 87.9 - I've never found one, but they must exist! It is sure a lot better frequency to use than 88.7 - KTCU is always getting clobbered over here. It is really annoying because 90% of the time the person with the modulator on isn't even using it - dead air.

UNREAL! they are on the tip-top of that tower!?!?

Well I got a call back this morning. Can anyone determine or HAS anyone determined what time these guys sign on in the afternoon/evening? That information would apparently be very helpful. :)

Thanks in advance!

6:30P is most of the time. I hope these idiots get so busted. Univision rejects?;)

They were on at 3:30 this afternoon.

Oh yeah, and my "vide0chik" account has been banned. Apparently I was unaware it is now illegal to have more than one account *sigh*

Nice of them to give me the choice of which one I wanted to keep.

They began airing what sounded like a bad Argentinian Christian children's record at 6:30p until at least 7:00. The accents were Argentinean or Chilean, definitely South American. I couldn't hear very well, the signal kept fading out where I was driving (114 and MacArthur / O'Connor). They don't seem to be on air right now. I'll try calling tomorrow.

As I drove to work last night from 11 to 11:30, I tuned in to 87.9 to see what I could hear. In my driveway in Plano (75&Spring Creek) I could only barely get a little recognition that some kind of signal was trying to come through. The audio was way down in the hash.
I could get a fluttery signal when I got on to 75 which made sense since that's up higher than my neighborhood.
I got my first real good blast of signal about 11:14 when I got to about Belt Line. It breifly lit the stereo indicator. It was a loud signal.
It was up and down for a while as I got farther in to Dallas, but became more listenable around LBJ.

As I was rolling past Northpark, I looked in my rearview mirror and saw a car come ripping around an 18 wheeler behind me. As soon as I saw the car, the music on 87.9 changed to some kind of southern rock music. Obviously, this car had some kind of IPOD transmitter in it. As he ripped past me going about 80-95 miles an hour, it was blaring in full stereo. He got about half a mile up the road and the music disappeared when he crossed over 3 lanes to exit the highway. It briefly came back as I passed the Knox-Henderson exit and could see the light was red at the intersection.

After that, I got a crystal clear reception of the pirate when I got on to Woodall Rodgers. The stereo indicator fluttered a bit when I got to the bottom of the ramp at Field street to turn into downtown, but it was still plenty strong.

Suffice to say, this pirate is pretty potent. However, I was pretty impressed by the signal put out by the IPOD thing. I sometimes wonder if some of the "pirates" I think I hear from time to time are those dang IPOD things. :)

Here's a suggestion. Try tuning in to 87.8, if you can. In Mesquite, I can hear audio when I am on 87.9, but the "tuned" indicator on my radio doesn't come on. When I drop it to 87.8, the "tuned" indicator faithfully comes up, and stays present all the time.

As to when they sign on / off... So far they have always been on, at anytime of the day I check. That's anywhere from 9:00 AM to about Midnight.
