NEPA format change imminent

Either nobody's noticed or nobody cares, but the sure signs of a pending format change are on the air in the market. WQFM Oldies 92 & 100 has flipped using an All Christmas stunt. The difference between this, WFEZ and whatever Magic does, is that WQFM has totally taken their moniker off the air, calling the station 92-1 WQFM. The "O" word is gone, and it's a good bet that the station will be in a totally difrerent format and market position when the stunting's done.

This isnt Oldies 92& 100 playing Christmas...that station according to what they're doing on the air today, is OVER.

Maybe they're going to do what WOGL/Phila. has done - Play essentially the same "Greatest Hits Of All Time"-type music (after Dec. 25), but just drop the "Oldies" name?

Clueless speculation on my part... I'm sure you have more inside connections to information than I do, Kevin.

I can only hope it is the return of 92.1 Z-Rock. I still have the bumper sticker on my car. It would be nice to have a Modern Rocker on the air in NEPA.

If corporate looked into the past, they would see that Z-rock on 92.1 would work again. Would it kill off Rock107 ? Probablly not. Will Shamrock do it? Again, probablly not.

92.1 Z-ROCK
100.1 & 100.5 JACK, SMOOTH JAZZ, or even maybe something haven't even thought of?

Hopefully, that is all we can hope for at this time.

Why in the world would they split the signal? 100.1 is not a stand alone station! And for the love of God, what is this fascination with smooth jazz? it seems everyone thinks it is the format to save the world? What do you think a .5 share if best?
I doubt Z-Rock will happen, Shamrock have been there....the Jack format is a here today gone tomorrow format. I would put ESPN on the FM and then how bout this.....the Station is owned by a Newspaper, has all the resources of the Voice and the Times, wouldn't a News Station bury WILK. With the papers and news Allinace they have the news crediblity to put a great product on the air.

My money's on a JACK format since The River doesn't seem to be making too big of a splash.

They don't know what they are, Aerosmith, Zeppelin, I change the channel. It doesn't fit the format. Oh Yeah Pink Floyd...they rock???

Uhhh...I'd bet the ranch and the baby's milk money that's not gonna happen.

All news would add a big chunk of outlay in the salary column. Don't think so. I like FM Talk on 92 OR...ya ready? Spanish.

Actually I got a chance to hear the smooth jazz station in Philly----It's very good. If a smooth jazz station was done that well here, I think it would be viable. But the key phrase is "That Way Here."

NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!
That would entail actually hiring people to work there.

I had a rep (I WON'T MENTION ANY NAMES) tell me it would be a soft ac kind of station. When I asked about Jack, the rep Smiled!!!!!

Not sure what that means or if I was being misinformed but that's what I was told by someone looking for my business.

DON'T YOU GET IT???

ATTENTION, ALL YOU BACKWARDS RACIST HILLBILLY MOUNTAIN DWELLERS: THE ONLY WAY A STATION IS GONNA DO GOOD IS IF THEY PLAY DANCE OR HIP-HOP. DANCE IS THE BEST AND HIP-HOP IS RIGHT UP THERE. FACE IT, NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR ROCK MUSIC ANYMORE. THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT HATE RAP, HIP-HOP AND DANCE ARE RACIST 30-SOMETHING REPUBLICANS WHO HANG OUT IN WAL-MART WEARING THEIR DIRTY WIFE-BEATER AND WORSHIP THE CORPSE OF DALE ERNHARDT. WORD UP, YO!

It looks like Times Shamrock is tired of seeing Magic 93 pull big numbers and it wants a piece of the pie.

I can't see Jack because it would nibble away at Rock 107. A previous poster said the River isn't making much of a splash, and I agree. I like the station a lot, but it's the world's best kept secret. Promotion consists of one billboard. Shameful!

ESPN Radio on FM? Waste of a signal. No one listens to it on AM, even during Phillies season.

Smooth jazz? Please! Again, a previous poster can't understand the fascination with this format, and I wholeheartedly agree. This is not a smooth jazz town.

Adult standards? Take a bite out of WNAK? Maybe, but the elderly audience is a tough sell.

News/Talk? Yeah, the News Alliance. Combine the resources of a mediocre newspaper and some last place television stations. This market is begging for a decent news product because WILK is awful. However, this format costs money, and I can't see that happening.

AC looks likely.

If what you say is true, Oldies had a 9 year run starting on
Labor Day 1996 with the Stones "Satisfaction" kicking it off.
Kevin, you were a big part of that initial excitement at the
start.

Nigel, WILK is doing I think the best that it can do
under the budgetary circumstances mandated by the
corporate bean counters. 6 hours of local talk daily,
High School football and local weekend programs.
Have you listened to WARM lately? Lighten up, it is
what it can only be. The market has to support the
product. Selling NEWS/TALK in this area is tough. I
did it for 4 years. They can do what they can do. You
want them to simulcast Christmas music?

Re: Smooth Jazz--I tend to agree that a total smooth jazz will not pull ratings, no matter how good it is. However I still think EZ 103 could modify its format to include smooth jazz with its normal soft AC rotation. I think they would have the best luck with it and have nothing to lose by giving it a shot (they already have a smooth jazz show Sundays).

Re: JACK--I've hear a number of rumors about 92/100 going JACK. Maybe, maybe not. But I think the River got the goods on that. I know Bold Gold loves to differentiate itself from JACK and is highly critical of it, but they are the closest our area has to a JACK format (kind of a classic version of JACK) and another would just duplicate the effort. I'm not sure why they are so critical of JACK. I think JACK done right can be a hit. JACK does not have to be jock less (though it usually is) and there's nothing stopping the RIVER from having good local content. Any format can work done the right way. Stations that do JACK just to save money is bad. But doing JACK with good programming can be a good thing. There are those like myself who love total variety. I'm so sick of being spoonfed the same 100 songs most stations play.

David, when you were selling WARM, the station was a mess (not as big as it is now). If the product was better, it would be an easier sell. And, as far as lightening up goes, that's the problem. Everyone has lightened up. No one demands better and that's why radio in this market is struggling.
Edited by NigelWick on 11/03/05 03:22 PM.
