NEPA radio salaries

I realize this topic can be a pandora's box but I will try anyway. I'm from outside the market and am interested in realistic salary expectations for this market (taking into account format types, day parts and particular companies). This would be for new hires. Thanks.

For Full Time people, Citadel and CC are in love with the figure 18K. Obviously it varies all over the place depending on specific circumstances, but whether you are on-air, or production or whatever, their target price is 18K for a new hire.

Wow... who said you can't make a good living in radio! 18k!!! I just checked and if you're married with one child, you're just about at the "poverty level". It's a disgrace.

Well that's certainly not a lot of money but let's remember this isn't rocket science.

Plus you have to expect low pay for a job that lots of people think they want, in an industry where there aren't all that many openings.

To make some money here in radio is about two things. Being halfway decent on the air and having little or no ambition. If you're halfway decent they'll keep you and if you have no ambition or aspirations for larger markets they'll keep keeping you and you can end up making a decent living. There are people in radio in this market, the high end payscale, who make as much as say, a judge, a school superintendent, etc. There aren't many but they exist.

A judge? Judges of Common Pleas Courts hereabouts make 135K and beyond...no jock is making that kind of money here, nor have they ever, EVER. 75K tops, and that would apply to a scant handful of proven ratings-grabbers...and that list is short.

Yeah, I think judge is a bit of an exaggeration. But 75k is conservative. Some contracts contain incentive bonuses and I bet you get enough Arbitron clicks in your direction and close to 100 happens here maybe even more for some of the top two or three.

This radio market is what, #69? I read about a morning team in market #53 on allaccess.com. I forget where #53 is but I want to say like Birmingham or El Paso, someplace like that. The team moved "across the street" like a month ago and their former GM said, "We wanted to keep them but in the end we couldn't satisfy their asking price."

I don't know what they're getting where they ended up but they walked away from the former employers offer of 2.1 million. That's only 13 slots up the market size dial. Not even quite top 50.

WOW! 18K  I was making somewhere around 15K Full-time about 10 years ago and left because I thought THAT was bad and was never gonna support a family on that! Radio is no different than Heroine, it really isn't. They know they have you at whatever salary because of the love of it. It's not until you take a serious look and realize, maybe I can keep it as a hobby and then go out and do something else with this talent and make much more money in the process.

I say we all look into becoming a judge. Better hours, better pay and snazzy looking robes.

Yeah and if you do a lot of civil bench trials, look at how much more you can make on kickbacks.

Does anyone get into radio to get rich? Everyone I've encountered, outside of sales, chose the field because they like broadcasting.

We all could make more doing something else, but we do radio because we like it.

get rich? No. But I had the luck of starting my career as a pt jock in Philly and moved along a path to doing mornings in large and medium markets. I did not get rich but made enough to support my wife and four kids. Never made the big bucks though (six figures). I'm 43 and off the air (not of my own doing) and looking at my options in other careers. I would love to work on the air again but relocating isn't an option. So while I didn't start with the notion of wealth I did work with people who made 75K to 200K. This gave me something to shoot for. If your good, willing to work hard, take direction AND relocate there are opportunities. Just go into this with a clear understanding of the difficult choices you might have to make.

Getting back to the answer---you'll notice some of the people who we assume are making the most money are natives of the area. Frankie Warren, John Webster, etc. They have no desire to leave the area and have been local fixtures. Homeotwn boys made good. There are a few, like Rocky & Sue or Jumpin Jeff who did not grow up here, but they've been here for two decades or more. Same thing. I also am a local product and never made more than 30K before I got canned and left the business for good, but that's OK I now am in the 6-figure range in another field.
That's neither here nor there, so I'll get back on the subject. Someone said this earlier and it's true. You'll start at around 18-20K---stick around long enough you could end up making 50-75K if you bring in good numbers, don't rock the boat and don't show any desire to leave the area.

Well do us a favor and tell us what field that is will ya? And are they hiring?

Communitcations Consulting----I consult corporations in their internal communitcations---everything from setting up their phone system to networking their computers. The travel is great---I've been to The Phillippines twice and also made a few trips to Puerto Rico on the company's tab. I'll let you know when there are any openings.

but that's OK I now am in the 6-figure range in another field.

So if we don't have to kill anybody, where do we send our resumes?
