Network Affiliate Disclaimer

I remember back in '62, when WRAL took the ABC
affiliation fulltime, WTVD branded itself "The Best
Of The Two Best" (and CBS and NBC were one-two
in the ratings in those days).

I never remember WFMY using "A CBS Affiliate"
in its logo, but I do remember the WJHL "U.S. 11"
one, which was appropriate, but I wonder if they had
to clear it with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

I think the US Highway shield is public domain, so they didn't have to clear it with anyone. Also, the 11 shield was not a true US highway shield, as they used an embossed-style Times New Roman font in the numbering.

[WJHL] used to have a very good logo: the number 11 inside a shield like those marking US routes.  US Highway 11 passes through Johnson City, so all the route markers made for some clever "advertising."

Actually, that's not completely true -- US 11 is split into two routes in eastern Tennessee -- US 11E (which goes through Johnson City) and US 11W (which goes through Kingsport). US 11 is split from Knoxville, north through Bristol.

Not two minutes after I posted that I thought to myself, "Now watch - somebody's gonna bring up the 11E/11W split."  I'm a card-carrying road geek, but this isn't a road geek board ... so I didn't go into all the split routings.    ;)

Technically, at least half of 11 goes through Johnson City.  Trouble is, the laws of transmission don't allow for E/W splits.  HEY!  I GOT IT!  WJHL could go back to the shield logo for DTV and ditch that Media General crescent.  11 for the .1 channel, and then shield logos for 11E and 11W for the .2 and .3 channels.  ;D ;D ;D

PS - The U.S. shield isn't copyrighted, at least to my knowledge.  If you have time to kill, here's a history of the familiar shields: http://www.us-highways.com/ussign.htm

Being briefly off-topic, there's also US 70, US 70N and US 70S -- all three running parallel to each other in Tennessee (rather than just being split).

In Lansing,Michigan WJIM (Now WLNS) would have the following inside a tv screen-ish shield,
Top part would be WJIM then under the WJIM name on the left of the shield would be the TV then in the middle was the 6 and on the right of the shield was the CBS eye and in small letters "AN CBS AFFILIATE" and under it all SERVING LANSING-JACKSON-FLINT
