New 92 just went Snooze 92?

I think it is a nice alternative to both B-106 and Magic 98.5. I do not listen to it all of the time, but do enjoy it and it sure beats that elevator stuff my parents used to listen to as what was then called easy listening.

Am I the only one that doesn't see much revenue potential in this? I would imagine many of the listeners are late 50s and above. Columbia doesn't have near the retirees that Tampa has that makes WDUV so successful.

Seems to me New 92 with its ratings would have billed more.

No... you aren't the only one. Granted I haven't actually heard the station but this format in Columbia just leaves me scratching my head. Sure the state is full of old people but the Midlands is no Tampa.

I did much better last week. I started the car and IMMEDIATELY heard "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" by England Dan and John Ford Coley. Then I lost the signal and started hearing this terrible AC garbage. Probably Star. A few miles down the road I heard Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" followed by Contemporary Christian, this evil mutant form of the format. Okay, it was probably still Star and therefore secular, but you get the idea. Then The Carpenters' "Yesterday Once More" lasted a pretty long time. Not that there wasn't interference, but it was the one song I heard. Then I reached the gas station and, under the roof over the pumps, heard country music. The next song I heard that might have been this one was "Faith" by George Michael. Wait ... nooo! Not that! Actually, maybe it's not so bad. I don't know. In any case, I mostly heard what would be called white noise. I'm not optimistic about going home because that was in the morning.

A member of my Yahoo group programs WCAM, a real easy listening station which doesn't reach Columbia too well, and he says it's doing well.

I'll make a note.

http://radiotime.com/station/s_29814/Carolina_921.aspx

The presence of Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond and The Carpenters doesn't mean a whole lot. They've got "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis (just the title makes me uncomfortable), which is quite new. And "I Want It That Way" by Backstreet Boys, "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel, "Hard Habit to Break" by Chicago, "Baby Baby" by Amy Grant, "I Do" by 98 Degrees and "I Love You Always Forever" by Donna Lewis. I don't know where they're getting "Snooze" from and this is definitely AC.

More: Dido, NSync and Five for Fighting are on the list, "Only the Lonely" by The Motels, "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter, "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt, "Missing You" by John Waite, "Hold On" and "You're in Love" by Wilson Phillips, "Big Girls Don't Cry" by Fergie, "Almost Paradise" by Mike Reno and Ann Wilson, "All I Need" by Jack Wagner.

There's a lot of good stuff too. "What's New" by Linda Ronstadt and one of the duets between Nat and Natalie, and "Summer Wind" by Sinatra.

I forgot to mention my own experience last week. I only heard country music and (in a different location, where the music wasn't country) briefly a DJ who identified the station as Star. As for what I described as "contemporary Christian" it might have been. I happened to remember that the station in the Charlotte market that plays this is at 91.9. The music matched.

This is from the web site, and my comments are repeated from the Yahoo group, mostly. They're not in order.

"Angel" by "Sarah McLachlan is soft enough, but just plain weird. I doubt I would like these. "I Could Fall in Love" by Selena, "Glitter in the Air" by P!nk , or "I Knew I Loved You" by Savage Garden. "Right Down the Line" by Gerry Rafferty, probably not. "Every Breath You Take" by The Police--definitely not.

"I Don't Want to Wait" by Paula Cole. Why don't they just put themselves out of their misery now? On the other hand, "Moon River" by Henry Mancini. And "Nice Work If You Can Get It" by Sinatra.

"Drive" by The Cars and "Now and Forever" by Richard Marx--not my taste.

A lot of good stuff there, but I'm glad I'm not stuck with this.

"Stay" by Lisa Loeb--this concerns me.

"All I Need" by Jack Wagner and "Almost Paradise" by Ann Wilson and Mike Reno--definitely not.

They seem obsessed with The Backstreet Boys.

"She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5? Are you KIDDING????

Three instrumentals--"Love Theme from 'St. Elmo's Fire'" and "Silhouette" by Kenny G which I don't care for, and "Love's Theme" form Love Unlimited
Orchestra, which I like and also heard on Dial Global.

"Music Box Dancer" by Frank Mills, but "Hold On" by Wilson Phillips. I have no idea what "Superman" by Five for Fighting would be.

From the Yahoo group:

Hey Chimp, tell ol' Crazee Carroll hello for me. He was a great radio man and we still miss him. BTW, if you're ever down Camden way drop by the station. We always keep a pot of coffee goin'. That goes for any other members of the group. If you're in the neighborhood drop by and say hello.

When I am down in SC next spring I will take Dave up on his offer... I am already wired though so I will stay away from the coffee, but hey an airshift for the fun of it would be awesome... CC1

I think the offer was meant for me, but I'm sure he meant you too.

Back on topic now.

All-4-One "I Can Love You Like That"

Paul Young "Every Time You Go Away"

Tina Turner "What's Love Got to Do with It"

Christina Aguilera "Beautiful"

Colbie Caillat "Bubbly", "Never Told You"

Bryan Adams "Everything I Do I Do It for You", "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman"

I don't know all of them, but the ones I do know I don't like.

These wouldn't be too bad: "Dreaming" by Vanessa Williams, "In Too Deep" by Genesis, "Giving You the Best That I Got" by Anita Baker, "Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin, and "Cherish" by Kool and the Gang.

These I'd rather not hear: "That's What Love Is For" by Amy Grant, "I Will Remember You" by Sarah McLachlan, "Right Down the Line" by Gerry Rafferty and "I'll Make Love to You" by Boyz II Men. I'd rather hear the Jackson 5 than Mariah Carey singing "I'll Be There".

I don't remember what Stevie Wonder's "Send One Your Love" sounds like. I know nothing about "Back at One" by Brian McKnight.

I do hope WEZV doesnt get any ideas from these people. I listened quite a bit to WEZV Easy 105.9 in the past week and I can't really complain about them. A few clunkers such as "St. Elsewhere" but there was one occasion where I heard Nat Cole's original "Unforgettable" (NOT the duet!) followed by a good song floowed by Andy Williams. Other than that, though, it did seem all the "real" standards were performed by new artists, and even when Jim Morgan promised us Tony Bennett it was a duet with Michael Buble. Sure, it was good, but focus a little more on the artists who made the music in the first place. And why are they so obsessed with Rod Stewart?

Not many instrumentals, but there are times when WLGI 90.9 Radio Baha'i plays smooth jazz. I'll take it! I landed on this station with the "scan" button and heard an instrumental.
