New age radio coverage of hurricanes...

100 kilowatt FM stations putting the on-air mic in front of a TV speaker!!!! I've heard it on two such FM stations this mornings! WOW

WNCT 107.9 is trying to pipe in WNCT-TV 9 coverage but the feed keeps going out - and when they do pick up the feed, there's a horrific "buzz" so I wouldn't be surprised if they go the same route!

At 9:51 AM, it sounds like WNCT-FM is now using the technique that B Lewis is explaining above! WNCT-TV feed sounds a little muffled at this time.

Listening via WNCT-FM's stream, by the way.

Shameful.

93.3 was running NewsChannel12 coverage about 1:40 this morning. (30 minutes ago)
95.1 was running someone, but I never heard who it was.

WNCT FM did a good job. Thanks. Also WCXL Beach 104. Thanks. Many stations off the air. Some did nothing. It is not the old days with good local service. Also heard here was WNIS Norfolk with excellent storm coverage. They did have some NC info for the counties along the state line.

What a shameful disappointment.

I was on the NC Coast for the storm, and listening into radio there I heard nothing but TV simulcasts.

This was an opportunity for radio to shine and it didn't. The day after the storm ended, they had a local man on in the morning taking calls, which was nice... but he kept talking up how they were going to throw it to NewsChannel99 or whatever TV. And when they finally rejoined the TV coverage, the TV reporter did the cliche thing: He told the audience to look at the scene behind him as the camera zooms in.

Great local radio. Pat yourselves on the back, E NC and OBX station owners.

You must not have listened to Beach 104 WCXL and its simulcast on the other stations in the group. I have to agree with N4GBK. They did/do a good job...superior, in fact.

Who is 'they?'
Did you only listen to one station?

??? If you were on the OBX you didn't listen across the dial very well. While we had transmitter problems on some stations we had live local coverage (except a few overnight hours to allow for 3 or 4 hours of sleep) simulcast on all stations (7 FM, 1 AM spread out over North East North Carolina). We had at least one station on through the worst of the storm, and very shortly after the eye of storm passed we had 3 of our transmitters back up. We never simulcast ANY TV station during the storm as our own team did a much better job at covering the OBX, IMHO. We are still in "continuous coverage" mode today, though we are getting close to the end of that and will return to "update mode". Listen for yourself at www.beach104.com.

For a "News Stud" your investigative skills are a shameful disappointment.

C'mon guys my coworkers worked their tails off for over 50 hours to provide coverage..There is no doubt we took over 500 calls on the air not the mention maybe 100 more on the business lines.Jeff,Doug Wayne and Donna were there through it all there is no doubt in my mind the info we gave out probably saved a life or two.We partnered with Channel 9 because they had resources we didn't with weather and reporters in the field. This was truly what local radio is supposed to be..I'm sure other stations did a great job as well..I can't believe the majority of the post on this board are focusing on the negative...Under the circumstances the coverage was outstanding..Perfect NO but again a battery operated radio was all alot of folks had so it made sense to split coverage with Channel 9 and we also learned what we need to be better prepared and give even better coverage if we have another storm...Jeff has been is this market 30 years and it my opinion it was the best work he has ever done...Technically it was not perfect but we got the info out and that is what is most important and Beasley should be proud of 107.9/1070.

Beasley should be proud of WNCT, and ashamed of all their other stations here for staying with music.

By the way PLEASE get rid of that annoying music bed next time you start taking calls. That was so distracting and annoying.

Good job Allen! My wife evacuated to Greenville... Ayden actually... and listened to you guys the whole time. In fact she called me a few times to feed me info about what was going on there.

I wasn't on the OBX, but I was further down the coast. kept spinning the dial (hitting the seek button, actually) and that's all I heard. What other investigating could I do?

While I still had power to watch TV, I saw each local station spend plenty of time every 15 minutes promoting the fact they were simulcasted on a group of radio stations. Each station seemed to "partner" with a specific radio group. Pretty sad that "The Talk Station" or "News/Talk" had no ability to do coverage for radio.

As for the station on the OBX that stayed on and did what a radio station should do, that's great. Good to know. OBX got hit worse than where I was , and so the people living there deserve more. Glad they got it.

How can anyone but a news stud know the answer to that one? Pull out your books man, do some investigatin'! :p
[unless stud refers to a 2x4, which is just an oblique reference for supporting the news staff or being dumb as a board or something ] :p

NewsStud still didn't give any attribution to who "they" is when he changed from the universal subject of "radio."
Dangit.

I loved this sarcastic line in his first post;

"Great local radio. Pat yourselves on the back, E NC and OBX station owners."

....and THIS line is his second post;

"I wasn't on the OBX, but I was further down the coast. "

So you slam station groups in a market you now say you weren't in? Nice "reporting" Studly!

Okay, now that I'm clean clothes again...

Mea Culpa

First, I'll apologize for flying off the handle and lumping "all' coastal NC stations into my post. That was unfair. Having been in your situation many times before (In another coastal U.S. state) you guys are frazzled and doing all you can, often putting aside your own personal lives to do the best you can for your communities.

I was stuck on the coast after the storm and then in transit since... but while in NC I heard exactly what I wrote about. Nothing but TV simulcasts. Some friends on the OBX told me the same thing about the radio stations in their area. You'll have to excuse the generalities as I don't know where/who your stations are. I guess you could say I was as "in the know" as your non-regular listeners who were dying for some information after getting whacked by a hurricane. In other words, not a P-1.

I did eventually hear Beach 104. Great job. Really. Again, I'm sorry for lumping you guys in.

But yeah... I was upset. Here I was in a strange place and I needed to know if I could get off the particular island I was on, or if there was an open gas station somewhere. All I heard on the radio were TV reporters telling me to watch his camera zoom in one some piece of debris. You're telling me nobody from your radio station is available to come in and do what Beach 104 is doing? It's really not that hard. Flipping the switch to the TV audio doesn't serve your community.

And as far as my board handle, feel free to make fun of it. It's a pretty stupid handle. It's something I'd never use in the "real world" which allows me to post without getting in trouble for posting (as my current job forbids it).
