New at this...but I heard some stuff today! & I need alittle help...

Hey! Never really had too much luck with skip or long-distance signal on the FM dial, but today was crazy in my car radio!

I work in radio here in Paintsville, Kentucky (eastern end of the state), so it's in that general area where I've heard these stations:

-WEBN (Cincinatti) -- not too far, don't guess it's skip. But that is never there. I always get Charleston, WVA's WVSR-FM with a poor signal at this location.

-KKYY (in Iowa?!?!) It said on my RDS "y1013"

-I need help with the last one...It was on 98.9 (which is one of our local stations) and it was coming in over it, very strong! The station on 98.9 said "Classic Rock and More." I didn't catch any call-letters, but I heard a forecast giving an overnight low around 51 degrees...

Can anyone imagine what that station on 98.9 was?

Interesting.

I Googled 98.9 Classic Rock and More and the station that came up was CFPC from British Columbia Canada.

If that's what you were hearing, it was not just E skip but a double hop E skip!

As for the station from Iowa, it seems too long for tropo considering the weather conditions but shorter than the average E skip but very possible for E skip, so I'd guess that was E skip because there have been numerous reports of E skip in the eastern US today.

There definitely was wildness on FM today! Sadly I could not be home for it! The DX Sherlock maps seemed to be chock full of double hop Es. Hopefully it will continue tomorrow.

I tend to think the OP did indeed get double hop, something I have never received in over 35 years of trying.....

There's still about 7 weeks left in the season...!

wow! Double-hop-e-skip...(like I said...not really a pro at DX-ing...just a pro on-air, haha)

What amazes me most about the station on 98.9 -- it was cutting in over a 100,000 watt station that was one county over from where I was... Is this common on these kinds of "e-skip" evenings?

(Bear in mind, I am in a hill/small mountain area...and that puts somewhat of a barrier on even those 100,000watt stations. However, the station normally has no problem coming in clearly in the location where I was tonight.)

The one in British Columbia wouldn't fit, since the temperature would be given in Celsius. That leaves a couple of U.S. stations, if Radio-Locator's info is up to date, both of them in places where tonight's low is forecast to be around 51: KKZX in Spokane, along with KGRA in Jefferson IA. Even if it was the Iowa station it's still a nice catch.

That's a good point and something I hadn't thought of but on the other hand, no other station on 98.9 is listed as 'Classic Rock and More' when you look it up.

Not only that, I looked up the weather forecast for Courtenay, British Columbia and the low is supposed to be .... guess what .. 51 degrees F.

While Canada is officially metric, that doesn't necessarily mean it's used exclusively just as there are parts of Europe that use MPH signs on some highways.

Unless there was an official station call letter ID heard, we will not know for sure.

I live in Oklahoma City and managed to hear KBYI in Rexburg, ID along with class A WROO in Greenville, SC and KISS FM 97.7 in Guatemala City this evening... All from a stock car stereo.

I haven't listened intently to any Canadian station lately, but don't the majority of them that are near the border proclaim temperatures in both C & F? (This is assuming that the "Classic Rock & More" Canadian is near the US border).

Would love to catch Kiss 97.7 Guatemala. I have heard others in that country, but Kiss is mostly in English! 97.7 *is* open here, if the pirate will tone it down.

cd

Any Canadian station I've ever listened to since I live near the border only gives the temperature only in C. Unless this station was in a rural Canadian market trying to rimshot into a nearby US city, I don't see why they would use F. I know US stations in Upstate NY that give temperatures in C and F, trying to reach the outskirts of Ottawa and Montreal.

When ES is strong it will override local stations like nothing. Its like radio jamming, all it takes is a stronger signal. I've witnessed a local 97kw station get overridden during the strongest ES opening last year.

Dang, it looks like I missed it all again.

That would be interesting if the Canadian station was giving the temperature in Fahrenheit, considering it's definitely not on the border. Courtenay is halfway up Vancouver Island, farther northwest than the mainland city of Vancouver. You should contact the station with your information; try to verify it directly from them.

Well, I went to the CFCP website and listened to their live stream.

They call themselves "Jet FM" and I eventually heard a weather forecast.

The guy said todays high would be 17 degrees and it will be 18 degrees tomorrow.

Sorry to say we can rule that station out as what was heard yesterday in Kentucky.

Someone mentioned that the station I heard on 98.9 could have been in Iowa, KGRA. I can't find very much information about that station online.

I am sure that I picked up a station on 101.3 from Iowa at about the same time lastnight (KKYY). Could that possibly increase the odds that the station I heard on 98.9 be from Iowa, too? Becuz if so, KGRA is indeed a 98.9 in Iowa.

The low temperature tonight in Spokane will be in the lower 50s, so another clue as you might have gotten KKZX on 98.9...

Indeed, it could! That's generally the nature of these openings. There can be, however, 2 or 3 "clouds" at the same time, to different areas.

Once you are really into the hobby, be sure you record your DX, at least on tape. You'll have something to send to the station, or you can call them to get a verification. I highly recommend www.totalrecorder.com ....price is decent IMO.

Total recorder is excellent. I would never be without it.

Just a observation about the mystery of the station on 98.9: given the erratic and often fast and furious nature of E-skip I'm thinking that the original poster did in fact hear Jet FM (nice stream, BTW). But in the mix he might have heard the classic rocker in Spokane, or the one in Iowa and maybe something else as well. As long-time DX-ers know this kind of reception is like an adrenaline rush; it feels good but can make you dizzy trying to keep up with it!

I'm in Canada 2-3 times a year and will confirm this. Stations right on the border will give Fahrenheit rather frequently. But as you move away from the border, you'll hear it less often....although you still will hear Fahrenheit from time to time. This refers to English-speaking Canada. In French-speaking Canada it's Celsius. In the UK it's almost always C...although every now and then you'll hear F. In just about all cases where you hear Fahrenheit it's given after Celsius.

Interesting how adapting metric has evolved north of the border. Carpenters still use "2 by 4s",
housewives still think in terms of "a pound" of hamburger (and Mickey Ds sells "quarter pounders"), and Canadian Football may be a bit different...and more wide open....than the U.S. game, but making a first down still requires "ten yards".

But when it comes to DX-ing in the U.S., a hearing a weather report is the next best thing to a legal ID for identifying a Canadian station.

I totally agree. I want to get that ID, but I don't want to stay on one frequency too long, afraid I might miss "something big" on another channel.
