NEW BREAKAWAY BOX

Sgeirk said:
From my understanding, the main difference in the ASIO version from the regular BBP version, is the lower latency thanks to use of the ASIO drivers. Use a Marian Trace card.

I know of an engineer running BBP ASIO on a 1kw suburban east coast AM station and swears by it.
Curious...Is the output level of the soundcard sufficient to drive his AM transmitter directly?

I think it's quite impressive that Leif, the developer, designed the audio processing for Super Bowl 2011 (and others, I believe).
With a majority market share of network television audio processing, that's one item on a huge laundry list. I think his processing has been used on the last 6 or 7 SuperBowls now. About all ESPN productions use it now (i'm not aware of any that are not, but it's been a few years since that came about, and a few years since i've been personally involved in any ESPN productions and chatted up their engineers, please correct me if i'm wrong, i would like to know anyways). Some other notables in sports are the last two Olympics, and the World Cup.

I'm hoping every single parameter of the hardware box is brought out front.
Just the dynamics core has about 150 controls. Then a bunch more for stereo enhancement, a few other things I can't talk about yet, plus the config, and it's up into the hundreds of controls. Some of the things that were said about the extreme controllability of a certain many-banded processor in a certain video recently could easily be said about Breakaway's full controls. It's downright daunting, and the manual and user guide writers have their work cut out for them. From what Leif said about a year ago (haven't asked lately cos I use all of the controls) it was going to address this by also providing meta controls, similar to how the Breakaway software already works. Don't quote me on that. :) I only have my hands on one of the new major components (totally amazing), I haven't had access to a full "all-in-one" finished software product yet, much less the basically finalized hardware.

The audio is handled by Marian, a fully custom solution. The Trace Alpha is a great card to use though. Marian analog/digital audio interfaces are indeed used in most of the digital hardware boxes. I don't see any reason why the Trace Alpha wouldn't perform just as good as anything custom under conditions of RF normally present in a non-malfunctioning RF plant.

Can you say how many bands it will have? More than 0&0 same as air aura? Looks like it will be a tweakers delight. Will you have a non-hd version??

Where can I get my hands on one of these in the U S of A when they come out?

I think various layers, like simple/middle/expert would be a good way to hide some of the controls but also keep them available for those that want to tweak and try things out.

Looking very forward to it.

It's interesting, the software version changes # of bands with different presets. I'm sure that will be here.

@ distribution, it will be very good worldwide. No worries.

@ bands, yes the same 4-7 band crossover for the multiband AGC.

looking forward to it too. some of the stuff in it has us giddy with excitement, while using it, and also while imagining you guys doing the same for the first time.

Man, this box is shaping up to be a freakin' barn-burner. I can't wait to hear one!

The software version is bulletproof. I really can't remember hearing it screw up on anything.... and with latency no longer a huge issue... it could really be cool ;)

Can;t wait for the new software version. I was on Breakaway at it's inception. It easily hung with my 6exi and 8500, which i sold, and like wnti said even the 11.Now using the Marian Trace Alpha ,just amazing. The hardware box will be something to hear and demo.

As nervous as I've professed to be about having a computer tower sitting on the floor & acting as an audio processor, since I bought a used $175 duo core computer & put BBP on it a few months ago, it has done nothing but run. Power failure? No problem, comes back up & runs every time with no human intervention. With the Marian Trace Alpha, software & a used computer, this thing flat out rules the roost for about what I'd expect to pay for a used Optimod 8000A. There may be no free lunch, but I'm here to testify that this thing comes mighty close. If the hardware box is even slightly better than the $199 software version, it's time to move over & let the big dog eat.

Breakaway was an earth shaking development, in my little world.

Complete game changer. Effortless sounding....and clean clear voice.

Haven't heard the 11 or the 8600 yet or the latest Vorsis.

I don't know for sure, but I would guess it's still XP Embedded. It has at least another 10 years of support from Microsoft, and probably more since before they renewed XP as a whole, they were already planning Embedded support for 15 more years anyways. Plus the actual "clone" itself has been tweaked to perfection and battle tested for the better part of a decade now. No reason to mess with that, I reckon.

Thanks... Makes sense because XP is definitely a reliable workhouse.

Given that the new Breakaway box is essentially a Windows computer in a custom box, I wonder whether it will change the perception that Windows computers are too volatile to be used for 24/7 processing at remote xmtr locations (even though it's been happening for some time yet).

Is that still possible license wise? Or does MS forces the purchase of W7 embedded licenses? I remember that you could downgrade your W7 license to a XP license for a while but not sure if that's still in affect.

Eventually they will stop supporting it. But I wouldn't be surprised to find that Microsoft still sells MS Doss on floppy disk, somewhere... i mean... this is MS we're talkin' about. ;)
