new calls for wlek 101.1 gouldsboro

did anyone else see the Northeast Radio Watch report of Blueberry broadcasting changing the calls of Silent 101.1 WLEK to WTUX ? How long before ellsworth and downeast maine get to rock out to a third WTOS signal ?

probably a while.....this is something like the third set of call letters the station has gotten and it's never been on the air. It's closer to being on the air than in the past, Blueberry has gradually moved it west so they can put it on an existing stick they already operate (I think they have a CP to operate off the WLKE tower)

actually WLEK was on air last summer from a site in or near Machias, I heard it, it operated at limited power. It was around that time that blueberry applied for a CP to move the signal from a Machias licensed class B, to a class b1 licensed to Gloudsboro. I agree that they moved it so they could put it on the WLKE tower, so if that is the case, why apply for a call letter change if they weren't ready to actually do something with the signal.

if they have the cash to keep it going, they'll put it on....the problem is, if it does simulcast 'TOS is it won't add that much revenue to the station because it won't run it's own commercials. WVOM and it's simulcast run the same commercials, the bear trimulcast carry the same commercials. If they could run separate commercials on all stations then they could make more money than they do now and not be in the money hole they find themself in.

What you probably heard was WRMO 93.7 Millbridge with 115 watts. They cover just the MIllbridge/Cherryfield/Harrington area, and don;t get into Machias at all.
There has never been anything aired on 101.1 when it was licensed to Machias as WBEO or at its' new Gouldsboro site.

WLEK 101.1, was on air last summer broadcasting WLKE 99.1, this was before the bear triple cast, from somewhere around machias, it was July i believe. I did not mistake 101.1 on my dial for WRMO which is at 93.7. My family owns a camp in that area, I'm up there often during the summer. The calls for 96.7 boothbay harbor are WTQX, again i ask the question, if they weren't going to put WTOS on 101.1 sometime soon, why bother changing calls and why call it WTUX ?? I agree blueberry should be running different spot loads on the simulcast stations, especially the ones the which reach very different areas.

Honestly, after reading what you've laid out, I can't think of any other reason why this stick would now be called WTUX.....what else can be it besides another frequency for The Mountain?

It is indeed going to retrans WTOS. That info confirmed from within Blueberry. Target air date is sometime this month, but we know how that can go. Should make things interesting Downeast.

Ray, thanks for the confirmation. I'm currently working in Bar Harbor as a cook, and I can't wait to hear something else on the radio besides county, smooth rock and classic hits !

Well, as of today, June 3, nothing on 101.1 heard from Mount Desert Island. I drove by their tower this past Monday/Memorial Day on way back from hiking-trip at Schoodic Point. Heard nothing at all on 101.1 and no new additions to their tower, just off Route 186. Perhaps they will couple into the present 12-bay WLKE-99.1 antenna.
Will be listening closely!!

musicman75: Yeah, you will LOVE listening to 'TOS play the same 250 songs over. And over. And over. Okay, maybe a slight exaggeration, but close. New radio stations are like new girlfriends. Tell me how excited you are about either after a month or two.

rjoc: Through the grapevine, I hear that a new antenna that will handle both of the frequencies is going on the tower. The present WLKE antenna is indeed 12 bays, but it's half-wave spaced, which puts out a gain roughly equivalent to a 6 bay full-wave spaced antenna. I'm going to wager that we'll see a new 8 bay full-wave spaced antenna on that stick to handle both WLKE and WTUX. Who knows when, though. This is broadcasting.

I will happily take AC/dc, metallica, and godsmack over and over with the chance of something new now and again, instead of the 20 beatles, stones, and journey songs that i'm hearin now with the chance of hearing nothing new. There is a lot of cross over been I 95 and NSX.

i noticed that too when i was down in bar harbor a few weeks ago..'NSX is 80% 70's and most of it is cross over with 95.7. It'll be interesting to see how 'TOS goes over in Hancock county, Blueberry's never expanded 'TOS into areas it's never been recieved, the 96.7 in Boothbay was flipped largely because of the low power station in Portland on 105.1 ticking 'TOS listeners off. Then again they expanded 'VOM into the Augusta market and it got pretty good ratings.

Thanks for the update.....speaking of which, I heard them last night (Friday June 4) on 101.1 in stereo off and on between 7 and 8PM indeed re-broadcasting WTOS, which I also can pick up well here on MDI. Sounds like they were just testing though, lost of dead air in-between, but steady carrier..Didn't stick around for top-of-the-hour ID. Not my kind of music, sorry.

I guess I will re-set that button on my car radio from 101.1 back to 97.7.

Last Id I heard yesterday they made no mention of 101.1 but the morning show was reffering on air to 'TOS as just "TOS" whereas before they were reffering to it as "96/7, 105 TOS"
