New CBS Layoffs?

Got back from a Canadian conference on sales. In 2001 Canadian radio was in trouble. They had spent much on HD and it wasn't working and revenues were down. Canadian broadcasters dumped HD for the most part, dumped web initiatives and focused on their core business. They added talent in a down economy and guess what: they have had growing revenues since 2001. In a horrid economic year in Canada this year radio revenue is up 3%. Yes they have fewer stations but the lesson is you can't cut your way to prosperity. Stations that use this time to refocus will win long-term. Those who cut or simulcast or automate will eventually lose the dollars in the advertising community. Ratings count, but localism counts even more. There is a reason stations that aren't in the top ten 25-54 like KIRO or KOMO continue to be among the top revenue stations in the market (not including sports)

Localism is legislated in Canada. They must play a certain percentage of Canadian content in their music. Otherwise, they'd do the easy thing and play lots of American music. You also have lots of national radio in Canada...more than in the US. Although the CBC has been hit with budget cuts.

Canadians, like Americans, don't care if the content is local. Just that it's good. Stations with liner card readers are live and local, but they're boring as bad beer, ay?

Also, you gloss over the most important line, and that's there are fewer radio stations in Canada. One report is that there are a total of 623 radio stations in Canada, vs 14,500 in the US. You guys in Seattle know what happened to Starbucks when they over-expanded, right? Lots of layoffs and store closings, right? That's what's going to happen in radio until the numbers come down to closer to 10,000.

Jim Trapp the PD was terminated... Great PD, good guy. Jack will suffer but CBS just doesn't care. They keep laying off the Jack PD's around the Country and the stations keep going down and down...

The important thing to remember is that people aren't important. Didn't any of you get the memo? Oh no wait a minute, that was a management memo. You weren't supposed to get that one. Sorry.

Its funny to hear that Jim Trapp and Jared Stanger were nice/down to earth guys..When I worked at JACK they were D-Bags. Jim would talk down to the staff and Jared would follow Jim like a kid in the school yard waiting for you to screw up so he can tell on ya or like that parrot in that Disney movie Aladdin. Jared would have his friends/classmates get hired on JACK and they didnt even have training to run the board. Granted its an automation station, but their were shows that ran off of CD in that station and no one from KGRG knew how to run a studio CD player nor knew what the hell a mini disc was. Im glad I got out before they got rid of me. That station needs to be burned its cursed I was there since The Point so I figured that JACK would fall too and I seen alot of great people leave (besides those 2 guys). Sucks to hear Lisa Adams got the boot in Portland shes the cool one.

In my humble opinion, the entire Jack format was DOA. It stunk from Day One and was NEVER about on-air personalities. The formats roots come from thinking somehow DJs are irritants to be eliminated. The format was/is nothing new, just marketed in a unique way. Once listeners caught on and were bored stiff, the jig was up.

Name one single format that has succeeded without on-air personalities. It hasn't happened yet.

However - if EVERY station eliminates mid-days/afternoons/nights, etc. it won't matter. There will be few choices for listeners wanting live jocks. Kind of like an anti-trust deal. And kind of like your local friendly gas station. It's funny how the vast majority of stations will all be selling a gallon of gas for the exact same price. Same deal with radio. If all stations are doing the same thing, numbers won't fall much.

Neither are listeners apparently.
