New Chicago oldies station WZZN-FM

Chicago oldies signal

Makes little difference in the overall scheme of things. WSAI-AM had 50kw and barely made it to a 2 share(and that was a damned good sounding station). Even if the better signal doubled their ratings, they're still not close to the Top 20 (even further away 25-54, where we're required to compete).

this approach to oldies is at least 60+ (they're centered around 1963).

Your story about younger demos is anecdotal evidence at best, and, despite all the Oldies-type songs in movies, TV shows and commercials (not to mention all the Moms who say "oh, my kids LOVE the oldies!"), it has never, EVER translated into listenership worth anything to any Oldies stations anywhere.

It actually runs all over from 1955-1979. The vast majority of the music is all around 60s with some late 50s and early 70s. The newest song I have heard is Bob Seger - Old Time Rock & Roll (1979)

The imaging seems young, hip and edgy.

I still stand by my statement, David. BTW, I am so happy you can sing Dick's song:) Obviously, you know a great deal about the large Hispanic market in Chicago.

c'mon, Jeremy- who'z zoomin' who? ONE SONG past 1974 on the entire station all day Tuesday. Center is 1964.3- to say their music "runs all over from 1955 to 1979" is a misrepresentation.

Actually, WLS had TWO great "years": the early 60s (Biondi, Taylor, Weber, et al.), and then the John Rook-Mike McCormick 89/WLS and Solid Rock years of the late 60s and early 70s.

Both have valid success and both could be used as models (personality plus vs. solid rock).

Just saying.

Chicago oldies

But, we both know going back to the early 60s would be demographic suicide-
nobody but nobody will buy 60+ demos.

The Lujack/L:l Tommy/Bob Sirot/Winston/Landecker days would be SUH-WEET!!!

94.7 doesn't exactly have a good track record of successful formats. Last time they got decent numbers was with CHR in the mid-80s, and even then they trailed WBBM-FM most of the time. What's one more flop?

Who cares? Thats ABC's lost. Lets just be happy oldies is back on FM radio in Chicago. Maybe they aren't as greedy as Infinity or CC, plus oldies is still profitable enough to run a station. Look at Boston and Philadelphia for example. Now, I am surprised that they are playing pre 64 music, but thats great! Can we stop focusing on the money and marketing factor for just a little while and live in dream land and enjoy this new station, no matter how long its around?

ABC

Has nothing to do with being "greedy"- radio is a business and think for just a minute about the concept of a group of execs at ABC at a meeting, all saying,
"you know- who cares if we really make much money with one of the prime signals in the #3 market in America? As long as we brought Oldies back and look like good guys, our mission is accomplished".

You could understand a major group saying that about a secondary station in market #249- NOT in the Windy City.

But it won't be the WLS of old. No matter how many old jocks from the AM's Top 40 heyday they bring back. Those days are gone. I can't think of a single instance where a set of legendary call letters was revived as an oldies station and was a success.

Yes, they are skewing a little older than WJMK. Basically, I would say it's basically a 60s music station with a sprinkle of late 50s and early 70s. I'm 24 and enjoy the variety of oldies, although I guess I'm probably in the minority. WRLL skews way older than WZZN.

But the unfortunate thing is something you just pointed out- you're a 24 yr old Oldies lover and that is a rarity (ratings-wise). We hear a ton of anecdotal stories like "my kids just love the Oldies" or "I'm a college student and grew up on Oldies", but the truth is very, VERY few people under 35 have EVER made an Oldies station their favorite.

Yes, two from the seventies. That is about right. Less seventies means more sixties and fifties.

I enjoy lots of different types of music even current stuff, but I agree a lot of younger people just don't like oldies simply because they're old which I think is a pretty lame excuse. Good music is good music regardless how old it is. And 60s oldies is great stuff.

Re: Chicago oldies

And in 1997 there wasn't a station called "The Drive" playing classic hits and taking at least SOME of their listeners away. And there wasn't an AM oldies station taking at least SOME of their listeners away.
