New CR sticks

So, now that the new 107.1 licensed to Vinton has been lit up, how's the station sound? What's the signal like in CR?

Any news on the 95.7/Anamosa yet? From the application, anyway, it looks like it'll put a nice signal into CR.

Station sounds old and tired - not a good thing for a new station. It also sounds REALLLLY small town. Nothing from Anamosa....yet.

That Anamosa station...

Geez. KROJ...what a disappointment. Can't say I am terribly surprised, though.

As for the Anamosa station, if it gets off the ground -- I read somewhere that CC is gonna be the owner, which I'm sure just *guarantees* that we'll be hearing great things from that station. I think it is only gonna be a 6KW station with a fairly modest antenna, maybe reaching CR pretty well but not Dubuque or the Quad Cities.

OK, how about some armchair PD-ing... What would you do with it if you were making the decisions over there?

I have a feeling that the plan might be to go after WMT-FM or KDAT with a AC or Hot AC format. There is plenty of CHR to go around in this market already. What about talk?

It would be cool if the signal were to reach the Quad Cities and/or Waterloo-Cedar Falls and they tried something maybe a little bit edgy, like hiphop or AAA. That's probably not in the cards tho.

What with Clear Channel owning WMT-FM, I somehow doubt the new Anamosa stick is going to go after them.

Possible Formats

Well, just consider the formats CC doesn't have in the market, and there ya go. Which actually leaves alot of options. AC and News/Talk are already taken...I can't think of the others, I believe the Fox 100.7, Classic Rock, is CC owned as well.

95-7 KISS-FM????
95-7 The BEAT?
Country?
Something Modern Rock, to go against 108 as far as CR is concerned??

Re: Possible Formats

Here's where the market stands now:

Clear Channel:
AM News/Talk
AM Sports
FM Hot AC
FM Classic Hits

Cumulus:
FM Rock
FM Country
FM AC
FM CHR (really Waterloo market)
FM Rhythmic CHR (really Quad Cities market)

Standalones:
AM Soft Oldies
AM Sports
FM CHR
FM Classic Country

Bahakel: (licensed to Waterloo but serving CR)
AM News/Talk
FM Oldies
FM Rock

Even though KROJ just signed on with a Classic Country format, I think Country is still a real possiblity for 95.7. KHAK is on top in the ratings, Clear Channel has no Country in the market, and KROJ has not established itself yet.

They could try CHR or Rhythmic CHR to take on KZIA, but keep in mind there are already two out-of-market signals drawing some listeners in CR. A new sign-on with a weaker signal than KZIA could easily get lost in the crowd.

A Light AC could help WMT-FM battle KDAT, but the signal might not be strong enough to reach some offices.

I don't think they'll try a "Jack" style format since WMT-FM has already done a very good job expanding its playlist and chucking out the burned songs, especially on weekends.

Other far-out possibilities...Progressive Talk, or move the KMJM sports format to FM and replace it with Talk on 1360.

You might be right about country, they might still give it a try (I fear), if they think they'd like to make a run at KHAK and that KROJ has no chance of doing that seriously. I was thinking about Jack, too, since it seems to be they format du jour, although that doesn't seem to imaginative.

I'm thinking that there is plenty of CHR, between KZIA, with B100 and 92.3 as rimshot signals in the CR area.

As far as rock formats go, is there much room for that, with both Rock 108 and KRNA around? Not to mention 100.7? I'm skeptical about that.

Progressive talk would be something I hadn't thought of, although a better use might be some kind of music format. I was wondering how WKBF was doing in the Quad Cities since flipping to Air America. Seems like a long shot for 95.7 but an interesting thought.

The guys that put KROJ on the air should quit pissing around with Cedar Rapids, and serve the Vinton and Benton County area. There's a pretty good population base there, and they have a couple of strong sports schools in Vinton-Shellsburg and Benton Community.

CC should try some progressive talk on KXIC 800 in liberal Iowa City, and
it also covers CR during the day.

CC won't do anything on the new FM to hurt one of their existing FMs, which leaves out anything hot AC or clasic rock. I would guess they might try country, maybe like they're doing on their 2nd country statio in Omaha, not exactly classic country but more oldies, imaging aimed more at guys.

CC tried their very light AC "Sunny" format in Des Moines a few years ago and that didn't seem to work, so they probably won't do that, although it would hurt KMRY more than it would WMT-FM. Smooth Jazz didn't last too long in Des Moines either, so that's probably out.

Re: Possible Formats

If CC doesn't use the new signal as a way to chew into some of KHAK's share, I'd be shocked. From what's been posted here, CC can't count on the Vinton station impacting KHAK, so it seems smart to go after the unchallenged country and perhaps bump KKRQ up a notch or two in the ranker.

So whatz the current scoop on this Anamosa station?...Forgive me I have been out of the area for quite some time?
Was having a sleepless night and read old postings and was curious?
Also curious if I may have ever worked with WallCloud....I imagine you do not want to reveal your identity , or you would naturally use your own name....but could you just answer if you were ever employed at a CR tv station ?
Possibly radio was (or is ) your field.??

Help a guy catch some ZZZZs please.
Thanks.
