New Daytime Soap Opera at CBS In Development

One business doing something does not mean another business will do the same. CBS is doing fine with a pair of game shows as part of their schedule. Where is NBC/Peacock’s Price is Right clone?

Comparing The Price Is Right to Generations is like comparing an apple to a potato, There is NO WAY NBC/Peacock (Or even ABC/Hulu/Prime Video for that matter) will EVER launch shows to go up that giant

To say nothing of the fact that one is a game show while the other was a soap opera

Generations was a dud. No one is reviving a dud.

Given that attitude, looks like CBS/Paramount already has with BTG

Or, try to work through this….not everyone follows the same business plan. Yet you try to tell us the launch of one soap led by a Black cast will lead to reviving a decades old dud. Do you grasp the concept of an analogy? No one compared the game directly to the soap. It was pointing out the lunacy that NBC was somehow going to need another soap just because of this new one.

Oh thank goodness someone pointed that out. By the way, it’s a lot cheaper to throw a game shows competed against out there and see if it works than a soap.

Literally no one said that. It may work. It may not. There’s a lot of reason for skepticism, but also some reason for optimism.

NBC is never getting back in the soap opera arena. Let's get that straight. They had the chance to bring back DOOL to replace NBC News Daily but they never did it. Why?? Because THAT would be lunacy )Which is why they went with Dateline Daily instead

Just as there's some room for optimism that more streaming only soaps like DOOL could be added to the mix which currently sits at one - DOOL on Peacock

And since Peacock is ahead of the curve in this area as B&B, GH & Y&R all still depend on OTA viewers, Peacock could decide to do something similar to what CBS/Paramount+ is doing with BTG by launching one of their own (And since NBC has some experience in this are (Although not recent experience), they'll know what to look out for so its own history doesn't repeat itself

CBS doesn't have this experience

That's what I've been saying all along

We know.

You understand they didn’t replace NBC News Daily? It’s still airing. Dateline is syndicated and the NBC owned stations air it (of course) as do others.

There’s really not.

The new soap is airing on broadcast. You get that, right? Paramount + is ancillary at this point.

And there is zero need for NBC/Peacock to do that because they have a soap already. They’re not, literally not, going to the expense of a start-up operation at this point on a 5 day a week soap. Days had a viewership base. Some imaginary new streaming soap doesn’t.

Is this related to the fact that one place I go for lunch had "The Price Is Right" on its TVs at 2:00 this week?
Yes. CBS cancelled The Talk, it last aired in mid December. Until the new soap premieres on 2/24 CBS has been airing TPIR at 2 pm in addition to 11 AM.

Last week they aired episodes of Hollywood Squares during that time. Threw me for a loop so I could see a couple episodes I forgot to record. But it apparently was just a one week thing.

For the week of 2/17 CBS will airing “Beyond The Gates: Welcome to the neighborhood” as a five part special to introduce the show. The special will air 2ET/1CT, while encore Bold and the Beautiful episodes will air at 2:30/1:30.

From the article:

CBS is giving fans of its upcoming daytime drama series “Beyond the Gates” a sneak preview of what’s to come with a five-part behind-the-scenes special titled “Beyond the Gates”: Welcome to the Neighborhood,” airing Monday, February 17 through Friday, February 21 at 2:00-2:30 p.m. ET/1:00-1:30 p.m. PT, and presented by the team at “Entertainment Tonight.”

Which is why I think BTG will be the only one to be allowed to air either before or after Y&R (Depending on the Time Zone)

Just saw commercial for BTG noting it premieres next week at 2 PM eastern, 1 PM pacific. Is it unusual for time slot to be different on east coast and west coast because I thought most network shows aired in the same time slot (eg 8 PM Eastern, 8 pm pacific) on both coasts except some live programming.

Despite running primetime from 8-11 like the East Coast, the vast majority of Pacific Time stations, barring various exceptions over the years, have always aired Daytime on a time schedule in sync to what is Central Time. This is true for all the networks.

Not for Daytime

Usually the live broadcast only to the East Coast is one hour ahead of everyone else. After that, it's one time zone right after the other

Just like the network morning shows all start at 7:00 AM everywhere regardless of what time it is on the East Coast

And since the West Coast broadcasts are never live liked the East Coast broadcasts are, West Coast stations don't really have to follow the East Coast broadcast day pattern anyway though they do for some odd reason

They generally differ from the east by an hour as has been pointed out. NBC would be a big asterisk to that, with Today running 7-11 just like eastern, and the only other program being NBC News Daily.

Obviously the networks can go live with western editions of the morning shows as needed. But by and large, the networks are understandably going to want their morning shows (on weekdays) airing at the same time in all time zones.

Eastern time zone schedules differ from the other time zones in that the others follow the Central time zone pattern. In other words, The Price Is Right airs at 11 AM Eastern but 10 AM everywhere else. The choice-of-timeslots for Y&R is not offered to the Eastern time zone; it's 12:30 or delay the show, as is the case in Louisville. All other time zones have the option of 11 or 11:30 AM. NBC News Daily is offered four times and the affiliate has a choice of when to air it. Most markets carry it at 1 PM (local time) but there are exceptions: WRC in Washington carries it at 3 as a lead-in to its 4 PM local news.

CBS affiliates on the West Coast have always followed Central Time scheduling; ABC's used to follow Eastern but dropped the practice when KABC and KGO started 5 PM local newscasts in 1974 and needed time for their afternoon movies at 3:30. At one point, Edge of Night was on at 11 AM Pacific, and there were a few other deviations, but the West Coast eventually came to follow Central time. NBC used to have a weird practice of airing the morning shows from 9 AM-noon, then--rather than give the affiliates a half-hour to themselves--would go straight into the show that aired at 1:30 Eastern/12:30 Central. In the early '70s this meant that the game show Three on a Match was on at noon on the West Coast, followed by Days of Our Lives at 12:30, The Doctors at 1, Another World at 1:30, Return to Peyton Place at 2, and Somerset at 2:30; affiliate time started at 3. I don't know when this practice ended.

But re Beyond the Gates, there will be no choice of when to run it; it will be 2 PM (ET)/1 PM everywhere else.
