ND does not make changes lightly nor will it tolerate being contested by small men who think they are important. After all they are ND and like to remind people of that fact. Not withstanding Shurtz donates money to ND and they have domers on thier staff. Why not do business with people that are donors and part of the family? Oh that's right Art if part of the Sicillian family or at least likes to have you think he is connected. God spoke and Art lost.

In the early 80s while U93 was parting the waters of the Red Sea, you’d be advised to remember that their sibling, 1490 AKA “15 Country” was earning a 9-ARB, and getting a lion’s share also. Gary Clark was key, but decided to leave South Bend to return to Louisville to be closer to his wonderful family.
The rise [and unfortunate fall] of that combo is prime for a chapter in a college radio business textbook! It boils down to three elements: Good management, good staff, and MASSIVE promotion... U93 even handed out logoed bobby-socks. They had "average" on-air product backed-up with EXCEPTIONAL promotion!
They should probably change the station name to "V93" ... it isn't about the U any more.
It is interesting to read a rationale post on WHY a station would not want to carry ND sports. I suppose some of us are stuck in the past ... accustomed to when the university owned the media outlets and it truly was U93 and WNDU television. Now WNDU radio is WNDV and the TV station has gone Gray. It all has to be about the money and ratings now ... and not about the heritage.
BTW: Aside from all this anti-AMP angst (there is a thread for that) any word on where ND will end up? Or will they be off air in their home market?

U93 may of wanted to keep Notre Dame, but Art is a terrible negotiator. It is not Notre Dame's fault, not Jack Swarts fault, it completely belongs to Art!

I wouldn't be surprised to see ND buy the time and let ND Sports Properties handle the operation..
Mr. Hippo: my "peanut whistle" reference to WNDU-AM is regarding coverage of the 1,000 watter (and sonic signature) - not program content. You eluded to the troubled technical facility with your own posting as well. A shame the University chose that site knowing it had issues. They even requested (and were granted) a waver when the site was moved (circa 1970 or so) as they could not provide city grade for the C-O-L.
15 Country did well even with that lasso around it's neck. Of course that was several decades ago and the radio "lay of the land" is completely different. Bringing this up to the current decade, 1490 on several occasions over the past years was unrated in the ARB 12+. They carry (and have for a number of years now) ESPN - you'd think that would be worth a couple points.
One other interesting tidbit pointing to the managing or mis-managing of a station under AMP control that, "serves the public interest." WNDU-AM lost their 1/4 wave stick to straight line winds in (I believe my time line is correct here) December 2006. It was something like 9 months before they replaced it. In the meantime, they utilized a makeshift "longwire" antenna on the site and throttled back to 500 watts. The coverage area was measured in city blocks. I wonder how much $$$ they made back thru that long, cold Winter and Spring.
