New FM News Station

Bonnie Petrie left KRLD at the end of September. Have it on good authority she has been in Houston recently for what reason, I do not know.

Aside from "urban talk," has Radio One EVER done a news/talk format? Besides, I don't see that it's changing formats all over the place. It swapped formats and changed the name on one station in Philly and dropped the currents on 94.5 in Dallas while reimaging the station, but those are about the closest to format changes I can think of. I guess it also allowed the format to be changed on an AM in Boston it's been trying to sell for years, but that hardly seems like Radio One making a change.

What makes me think you won't see a news/talk format is that Radio One doesn't seem to do that format. Now, I've always learned never to say never, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I think all the unlikely stations are being reported first. Cox doesn't normally do news. My bet is still on CBS if something like this happens.

Why pull Eagle listeners over to 106.9 and then dump them?

Any possible "News" station in this market will probably be like the effort a few years ago on KFNC. Don't hold your breath for a clone of WCBS/WBBM/KNX.
 
I'm looking forward to hearing what the new FM news product sounds like. Recent FM news efforts in other markets like Chicago and New York have fallen a bit flat (okay, really flat), but maybe the folks here in Houston know something others don't. Even at its peak, KTRH was never the market leader with an all-news format, so I'm not sure an all-news FM effort would make much of a dent either. Could be wrong and will be happy if I am. The more solid, radio news journalism, the better for Houston. All-news, as has been pointed out here before, takes a considerable financial commitment to behind-the-scenes support staff if it's going to be done right. That means a news director, several drive time producers, a desk assistant or two, several reporters at the minimum, a board op or three and of course the anchor roster, including sports and weather. Some of these operations assume if they have a well-known anchor, they're good to go. Not the case. People will listen for a while, but when they realize the anchors are reading re-writes from the Chronicle, they'll go elsewhere. It takes a commitment to actually cover the local news outside the newsroom. Past efforts in Houston have failed mostly because the planners thought they could get away with high-profile names and not a whole lot of substance. I have a feeling the people behind this new effort realize that and we'll probably hear a decent product when it debuts. How long it lasts is a debate best left for another day.....

They should regulate and put a stop to this kind of crap. 2 stations with the same programming on it that serve the 70% of the same area. If COX can't operate them as separate stations, they should sell one of them.

Its not so much that Cox can't operate them as separate stations. The problem is KGLKs signal. With the talents of Dean and Rog on the payroll. Cox had to come up with a way to extend the reach and penetration of The Eagles signal to reach more listeners
What better way then to take the under performing signal on the opposite end of town and simulcast it. From what I'm hearing. Its working.
 
Well - let me just state this...Two of my good friends in the business in Houston are going to another gig somewhere, but can't say where...One of them left their previous position nearly two weeks ago, and the other one gave his two week notice last Friday - One of them is a former bureau chief - so, is this a situation of "where there's smoke there's fire?"....

It wouldn't be a stretch to put Sports 610 on an FM, either. That would effectively move the most of the remaining people under the age of 65 who still listen to Ancient Modulation to FM.

740 is the station that wants you kids off their lawn, now. I can't think of anyone I know within 10-15 years of my age who listens to political talk anymore, but they all have their favorite sports station, and right now they're all talking Texans football.
 
All I know is that whomever drew up those confidentiality agreements must have drawn up my lease contract I'm now under. Nobody is uttering a peep about anything! The bosses must be very well-respected or the contract is an impenetrable steel box, or both.
 
Was thinking the new FM "News" station might be 96.5 until I saw an ad today for an Afternoon Drive jock for KHMX. Next logical choice would be KLOL. I really don't think anybody could do it better than CBS.

As far as "Sports" is concerned...if you combined the ratings of all the local sports staions in this town (a non-sports kinda town)...you MIGHT garner some decent ratings...and you MIGHT even be profitable.
 
This news station is not going to fly. Lana and J.P. are old as hell and how much longer can they possible go on doing radio before one of them drops dead in front of the mic? When J.P. was at KTRH, he could barely read a sentence without messing it up. Why this station would pick them up is odd.

This company also took all of the KTRH rejects,the ones who were fired because they couldn't perform their jobs correctly. They won't be an asset to a radio station company that is already struggling financially.

It's 92.1, and you're right - I didn't believe it, but that's the frequency. I half wonder if Merlin is LMAing it from Radio One.
