New Format for 94.7 FM

Has anyone noticed the call letters on their web player says "WRXP_FM"?

Yes - in the 94.7 updates thread on Friday night 1/18:

I would not mind any normal Monday buy why a holiday monday. Many of the city people are up here in Vermont skiing. I was also happy to say there is hope for radio. I taught two teenagers today at Okemo who listen to Z100 every morning in the car.

I really, really hope Cumulus isn't setting everybody up on WRXP returning, and then pulling another fast one at the last minute (as happened TWICE before on 101.9.)

I mean, I don't know how it is in NYC right now. But I imagine alternative fans over there are probably getting REALLY SICK of being jerked around by those call letters by now......

That about sums it up...

Don't ever go by the format descriptions on the RDS displays of most stations. Even on long-established stations you'd be shocked at what appears (on occasion) on the displays for call letters and format descriptions.

Likely the WRXP call letters are in a database with the "rock" format still attached to them.

If country should appear on 94.7 on Monday morning, possibly the call letters WNSH-FM (currently parked in Minnesota) or WDVY [formerly on 106.3 Mt. Kisco (now WFME Family Radio) as part of the simulcast with country Kicks 105.5 WDBY Danbury] will be requested for the frequency.

Call letters are mainly used by stations to try to match up formatically when dealing with advertising agencies who'll then have a clue as to what the station's about. That's the only possible reason that 92~3 Now applied for and got the WNOW calls replacing WXRK - maybe some ad folks who aren't radio listeners (to that station, anyway) thought they were still some iteration of K-Rock and/or Howard Stern (you'd be surprised at how some people are out of the loop). As mentioned previously, in the current PPM environment, calls mean nothing to listeners - except possibly in terms of branding which may help them remember where to tune.

PS Think it's been mentioned earlier on these boards, but what if the alleged NashFM national country format rolls out on say, both 94.7 Newark and 105.5 Danbury? Maybe not quite the simulcast Cumulus would be looking for, but...

It also helps if the station doesn't bounce around the dial like a pogo stick champion on speed.

Anyone else notice the 'AOL mail sound' that just played on the stream? Whoever recorded these sounds using the stereo mix on their pc obviously forgot to turn off their windows sound settings ;)

As for this new format coming tomorrow, please don't let this be another NYC version of WRRV/WRRB in Poughkeepsie. I wish country would be a better one since the city never had a country format in 11 years. WRWD and "The Wolf" both running country in Poughkeepsie. As you know WRWD is CC and WKXP/WZAD's "The Wolf" are both Cumulus, the same company that owns WABC and WPLJ and the new station coming at 94.7.

About a few days ago, Family Radio moved its frequency up north in Mount Kisco, NY at 106.3 after dumping its simulcast of WDVY's "Kicks 105.5/106.3" to a religious station. Over in Kingston, WFRH, another Family Radio affiliate at 91.7 hasn't changed anytime soon, but 91.7 is non-commercial and like I said, it's not going to change. WFRH had a weaker signal when it reaches Poughkeepsie.

Will see what happens beginning tomorrow. You decide. :D

I think that could work. 105.5's coverage area is basically on the northern fringe of 94.7's coverage area. So I think a 105.5 simulcast would complement 94.7 quite well.
