Bring back 14K ;D

Was that the circa 1990 metal station?

No, it was "Eclectic oriented rock" for about a year (1979), then was top 40 for a couple of years. I worked both formats and still have a few sheets of gold embossed 14k letterhead in a box somewhere. We had great t-shirts, too with the gold 14k logo on a black shirt.

Was Shawn Smith the PD when you were at 14K? He was the first 14K PD following the gradual switch from beautiful music. I'm not sure who replaced Smith, but Joe MaKay was PD when Top 40 14K became Adult Radio AM 14, WKGR.

Yes, Shawn hired me. His wife, Marylin, was the news department. I liked Shawn very much. After I'd been there about a year, the station began a transistion to Top40. They had a DJ, formerly from WGGG, named Laura (aka Christy Fox) who took over as PD. Laura was a very pretty, blonde college aged gal with lots of energy. She seemed very mature to me and I had kind of a boyhood crush of sorts on her. I remember being a bit intimidatedby her looks and personality..... Thinking back, she was just a few years older than I at maybe 22 or 23. Most importantly to management, her boyfriend at the time was a fellow named Gabe who was working at WCKS programming Top40, which gave 14K an immediate boost on the new format. One of the people that Laura hired was a young guy from CK101 to do afternoon drive named Jeri Banta, who wound up spending about 20 years at WYKS later. 14K also had a contract engineer named Chuck Conlon who worked full time for WRUF as the transmitter supervisor. Chuck encouraged me to study for and get my FCC General Radiotelephone license which led me into engineering.
