GOSH! If stuff like this happens "all the time" and the woman really was the one who was at fault, I just wonder why Maney was fired in Sac-Town. That's ponderous (also the rest of the show and his PD and some other management)! So unfair when radio promotions kill people ALL THE TIME, right?
And no, I really doubt that Flinn did due diligence before the hire. How many of you knew before reading this thread that he was a disc jockey involved in the most notorious and ill-advised promotion IN THE HISTORY OF RADIO?
Hope you guys have these excuses at your fingertips when he kills another one. This time it will be right in yo back yard.

In the quote that you posted above, the case (it's about Danny Czekalinski in West Palm if you'd like to google) is still pending and the facts of the case have NOT been established. In Maney's case, the events happened a year and a half ago and the facts are NOT in question. Also, there are NO TAPES of Danny saying the the "bi+ch signed a waiver so i can beat the hell out of her" and finally, Mr Czekalinski was not involved in a station promotion (where he was warned by others ON THE AIR that someone could die and then said he didn't care) and EVEN SO, I am saying his employer should/will can him.
Maney has had a year and half to hire counsel and get boobs like the people posting on this thread to be his jury in getting some "justice". Danny hasn't been afforded that opportunity yet.
Other than that, you're spot on Perry Mason. Your attempt to paint me as a friend of wife-beaters has failed as your march to defend mommy-killers goes on and on...

This guy is not a "murderer." If he were, he'd be in jail now, wouldn't he? He is guilty of exercising poor judgment, and not using common sense, but a "murderer"? That won't stand up in court. He didn't pull any triggers.goatboy said:

This guy made a poor judgement call by mouthing off for effect and "promotional value" I don't think he ever meant anyone should die over this stunt or his intention was to kill someone.
But blaming listeners of your product for the end result of your promotional efforts is crazy.
Why do you do promotions in the first place, yourselves or the listeners. It's a cause and effect issue.
Obviously, you cant be held responsible for what effect your promotion had on some people or how they react.

Should Bin Laden be held responsible for what his zealots did to us on 9/11. He didnt fly the plane. He just fired up people's ferver to the point of suicide.
Should Hitler be held responsible for the murder of millions of people. He didnt turn the gas on, just fired up fanatics to his ideology to commit genocide.

It's an interesting debate.
But if it was your mother, sister, wife or daughter, how would any of you feel?
It's tragic and should not have happened, but it did and people's lives were effected.

Well. TN-Boy, if you are referring to MY posts, hopefully you've just missed the parts where I said "Solely" responsible. I'm guessing that's the case. While I don't see the station or jock being guilt-free, this was a case of suicide through stupidity.
But, following your spin, whoever discovered nuclear fission could be held responsible for any and all nuclear accidents and bombs that resulted in death or injury...

Yes, I'm being silly...but so is any push to try to hold this jock and the station solely responsible for the woman's death. She killed herself by not peeing while drinking massive quantities of water. She had three kids.
The whole thing is very sad. But, at the end of the day, she did it to herself. I guess we're supposing that she wanted to win the Wii for her kids, which is a sweet sentiment.
It could also be that she wanted to win it so she could sell it and buy some crack. I don't know.
In the least, her maturity and intelligence have to be in question, which may also mean there could easily have been some parenting challenges, too.
I do not know nor plan to meet whoever this guy is. I'm sure that the whole thing has had quite an impact on him, too. It just sounds to me like "Goatboy" has something personal in this on some level and wanted to stir things up for new guy in his new town. It really doesn't matter to me, but to see people defending the idea of holding jock and station responsible for the lady's death is a point I'll argue against.

There is no doubting the promotion's existence contributed to the death. I'm not trying to say it didn't.
But how much liability to you saddle the individuals and the station with?
Bullets killing people is bad.
Suing the manufacturer of those bullets shouldn't hold water UNLESS there was an imperfection in them that caused harm.
Suing the bullet manufacturer because a doper shot another over a bad deal is not right.
Of course, we are all painfully aware that "right" and "legal" are not always the same.

This had started a great discussion and I am grateful for that. For the record, I have nothing personal against Maney. I did not apply for the job nor do I want it. I am doing very well where I am, thanks. It incenses me that this guy gets to pack up, go across country and never face up to what he did. Listeners and advertisers here need to be aware of what he did. This is reminiscent of the bad, old days in radio where a jock would be caught with a 14-year-ld, get run out of town and then change his name to Charlie Brown or something and be in a market 300 miles away with no one the wiser. "Hey, look, it's our new jock, Maney, ain't he cool". It's BS and Flinn should have done their homework on this one. Everyone knows what he did. People just haven't connected him to the most infamous radio promotion in the history of the medium. That isn't cool with me.
What about Mitchel Oerdorfer? He was placed in a sensory deprivation chamber by WZOD in 1974 for four hours. When they pulled him out, he had chewed off three toes and a left little finger. He was trying to win a pair of Converse tennis shoes and they dq'd the poor jerk because he'd dropped a size in the interim. The jock running the promotion is now head of MTV's Wazzup Mission in Sheboygan, WI.

Sure, the poor woman used bad judgement, but aren't we all pre-supposing that this woman had good common sense at all. Three children without a mother because of her participation in a radio promotion. If you have a family, you can understand the sadness of this situation.
Maybe the guy has paid enough. Maybe he has no conscience. But only he has to live with his participation in a promotion that ultimately killed someone.
Flinn has always been a little different with his radio stations, maybe that's what got him the gig.
Enough said about this. I am out of their demo anyway, so it won't matter to me. My children have their I-pods, so they could not tell what jock is on which station, because sadly it does'nt matter to them.
