New Haven Ratings

First I will say that 12+ numbers really don't mean much...That's why they are the ONLY numbers Arbitron gives up for free...
Kinda like a little tease to make you wanna see the whole picture.
Now, having said that if you are still impressed or confused by the 12+ numbers....Let's look at ALL the 12+ numbers and see that KCI has am impressive growth from a fall to fall 4.0 to a 4.5 while WKSS goes fall to fall down from a 4.1 to a 2.5.
Spring to fall Power goes down from a 4.7 to a 2.7 and fall to fall ZMX drops 5.3 to 4.7...
Remember that things have been heating up politically and TRADITIONALLY the local news/talk will always do well but exceptionally well when we are thinking politics both locally and nationally.
If you look at KCI across the board 5.1, 4.0, 3.7, 4.5 it seems that they are on a very healthy and steady growth.
Let's also remember that they made MANY staff changes going into this book. I think they made a change in every day part out side of the morning show. I would like to see the morning numbers I would guess with all the changes that they did well to help with the growth.
YZ took a big hit spriing to fall BUT, if you look across the board AGAIN you will see that they just had a BIG spike fall 06 to spring 07.
Again showing that KCI's steady growth shows that they may very well be on the edge of some impressive numbers now and in the future.

No disagreement that the 12+ numbers are just a tease...but the unsaid point is that 'WELI has a LOUSY night signal and goes through a pattern change that hurts their mornings in Nov., Dec. etc..

That an constricted patern AM syndication downlink (except for the mornings) beat out a large stick FM with a terrific signal says volumes about the FM.

I know less than zilch about music programming but if you can't be #1 or #2 in your own market and you get beat by a NT then you have problems....one would think.

using this line of logic, every station in Hartford but RCH should be concerned. you're right, you do know less than zilch.

However...the 12+ number DOES indicate the overall health of a radio station. And to have a "mass appeal" format like KCI at 8th in their own market for 12+ is NOT indicative of a radio station that is doing well.

Really Monkey? How is that?
How are they doing in the money demo's?
They seem to be making money. I certinally hear commercials and have noticed that they do PLENTY of appearances...
How are those 18-49 numbers looking??? Oh you casn't tell me becuase you know NOTHING.
I am not saying that I am a big fan of KCI but, I find it so annoying to read sensless posts baised on essentially zero information.
N/T'ers generally do well because people that may or may not be aproximately 110 years old fill out arbitron diary's....They do so probably because they are lonely...;-)
This contributes to the.....wait for it....PLUS part of twelve PLUS....I have always thought this sample system is so wrong for many reasons but, think about this...I will assume you have a life....got a job...have friends...maybe a hoby or two.
Have you ever received a mailer from say johnson and johnson, or something like that. Inside you find a coupon and a survey that is 4, 5, maybe 6 pages long....Did you fill it all out ACCURATELY I might add , and then take the time to mail it in.....If you answered YES then you may be 110 years old and LONELY.
Just my humble opinion.
I still see what looks to be healthy growth...You may now continue to believe to be poor radio from a station that you probably have some personal issue with.

How about an inch of civility? My point was and continues to be that in a reasonably large market (okay...market 100 whatever) an AM station that is pretty much a satellite downlink with a lousy night pattern is beating an FM powerhouse signal with human beings on at least a good part of the day and a decent signal all day long.

Simple math/logic would suggest that where the AM loses audience in the low demo and makes up in the upper and the oposite for the FM...so the 12+ numbers have SOME value.

Please know that while I am writing...I am also banging my head against a brick wall....
traditionally in many, many markets (big ones, little ones, fat ones skinny...you get my point)
News talk formats will dominate 12 plus numbers.
KYW Philadelphia
WTIC Hartford
KSL Salt Lake City
WGN Chicago
WTAM Cleveland
Anyway, I could go on, and on but I am sure you get the point.
Here's something to think about WELI is THE heritage N/T in New Haven....If you grew up here you know that when there was a snow day WELI had you coverd (now we hit the web or channel 8, 3, 30, 61 etc) When there was a fire or a major local news story (again, back in the day) WELI as your only option. Follow me so far...They were (and are) a part of the community for a very long time.
Now, back to present day...UPPER demo's will (mostly) turn to the heritage N/T in the market for those reasons....YES WELI is mostly satellite now but , the old schoolers still think of them as if they were like the old WELI.
Here's the real question or PROBLEM in the market
Why is said WELI 4th in the 12 plus numbers with a 4.9 and WKCI is 6th with a 4.5???
Can you see where I am going...It's healthy my friend.
PLR is PLR another HERITAGE station who has not drifted at all since the beginning of time.
I actually think they are just playing old airchecks from 20 years ago. I wouldn't be shocked to hear that Lappy retired 15 years ago and they keep playing reruns....He's done NOTHING new in FOREVER...Not bashing...Just saying.
WWYZ...Where's a country fan to go...?
WEZN...Sell those numbers anytime outside of Christmas and you're selling a LIE. They changed format
WYBC...dare I say weighted books...none the less a pretty good station with a well known syndicated morning show
Anyway, enough I am tired.....Not bashing you, or WELI, or anyone else JUST stating the facts

Caliv your posts are SO entertaining. thanks for the chuckles.

"WELI is mostly satellite now but , the old schoolers still think of them as if they were like the old WELI."

-That suggests a level of sheer "dumb" I am not sure I am willing to agree with.

And I have some problem proving your point about NT's dominating 12+ numbers.

WABC is #10
KFI is #3
WAQI is #3.....WIOD is #15

In the oldest county in the US (Allegheny...Broward is second)...KDKA is #2

KTOK is #10.

I just skipped around markets, but I'm having a hard time proving your assertion. Refresh my recollection again as to how NT stations will dominate 12+ numbers, especially those with older demos?

And please don't bang your head against the wall. Self-destruction is never a good thing.

Ha!

I'm not in the listening area, but I've scoped a couple hours of KCI's morning show (with Michael Maze?). The pace is slow, not enough good calls. Their pace is really what kills them. And who's the chick? She sounds like she just smoked a pack of cigarettes and chased that with a pint of whiskey. KEEP IT MOVING MAZE. People are still trying to wake up in the morning, right?

The chick is Chaz, formerly of WMRQ RADIO 104

I think you caught them on a bad day.
I hear lots of energy.
As far as the Chaz comments...Hey, She's no Courtney.
THAT is a chick who chain smokes what not.
If you're looking for high energy I suggest Hot 93.7....That S#1T is like 4 red bulls and a double espresso.
I think that KCI's morning show may be a little too adult for you not too sleepy with few calls.
I have heard them do too many calls at times.
Just my thoughts

Honestly, I only sampled 2 hours over two days (7a-9a) months ago. I'm sorry if I was too harsh. I know all about Maze and his whole history in radio and television and respect that. Without having given the show a fair shot, I retract my earlier observation.
