New Ipod Nano with FM tuner. PPM fails.

So let's assume that a PPM panelist is listening to FM radio with their iPod nano and has their headphone adapter working and the data is being properly collected by their PPM. What happens when they pause the live radio signal and a few minutes later resume listening?

If it's like the Microsoft Zune or the Sansa Fuze you can't pause the radio only turn it off and on.

BTW the new Microsoft "Zune HD" coming out this fall will have FM HD radio on it.

The new iPod nano does allow pausing and rewinding of FM radio. The info is on their product page at apple dot com.

Why doesn't this product have an AM tuner??????????

What were the idiots at Apple thinking when they decided to blow-off AM on this product?

Third, an AM antenna would not fit in a small case like that, and second, in the demographic of those that use a nano, AM is hardly used at all... most don't even know it exists.

And in first place, AM does not play music. Apple can make lots of money from the purchasing of songs tagged on FM listening, but not from AM.

Not to mention that the AM would be numb sensitivity wise due to all the digital clocking going on in the Ipod.

Well, then, it's time for manufacturers to switch to sine-wave clocking in the devices which are intended to have radios in them.
Don't say it can't be done, every old fashioned plug-in wal clock is linked and synched to the incoming 60hz sinewave.
And then there's no reason fight RF hash. It won't exist when sine waves are used.

I'll acept the answer "We don't want to, screw your AM radio." , but not "It can't be done."

I love AM radio but I also love FM and iPods. I would have liked to have had all three on one small device. I'll bet a company as clever as Apple could have found a way to put AM in its iPod but probably found the workaround too costly and not recoverable by any incremental sales an AM band would generate. Nevertheless, I am thrilled that radio was added to the hugely successful iPod at all.

As hysterical as I thought certain portions of the first page of this post was, I'm just going to keep it serious, short, and simple. I have a Zune with FM radio. It's perfect for me, not only because I'm into radio, but because I also get to carry all my own personal music that radio overlooks with me. It beats the old days of carrying two devices just to get the best of both worlds. Yes, sometimes I do miss AM 550 KFYI at times, but I got used to Newstalk 92.3 KTAR, which is more fun and interesting.

I podcast my favorite AM talk shows.

I love Ipods/Zunes / other devices that also include FM. I guess HD (for some people) is good too. Lets see how good my HD Zune will be once I move to London.
