It runs commercial free because its owned by Ted Tucker. Ted buys stations in small towns and applies to the FCC to move them to larger ones nearby. Then, he sells them at usually a substantial profit.
The challenge he faces with 98.5 is the closest he could get the station to the Tucson market was a city of license in Vail. The transmitter is located on a remote mountain top that doesn't have regular electric service. So, in order to get the transmitter to work there he got creative and made it solar powered. That's why it isn't on at night -- it needs the sun to run. Plus, we're in the winter soltice time of year - the least amount of sunlight per day. Less time for the batteries to charge means less time the transmitter can be on.
Its likely with the recent crummy weather that he's only been able to operate the transmitter on days where there's been a decent amount of sunlight.

Would you guys say that they're off more than they're on? And, are they off the air EVERY night? Obviously, I have a vested interest because I'm the guy playing those 'burned out oldies' in the afternoon. ;D

Too bad that the signal is marginal at best and that it is not on all the time. I actually have 98.5 as a preset. Other stations bore me many times. 98.5 has shown up in the book with a .5 on occasion.

Which is why I'd vote to have the music stream from KYEN up in Colorado. I've been listening to that stream at work for a couple of weeks - now there's some intriguing tracks in that hard drive.

Spent the Christmas holiday in Tucson and listened to my old 92.9 some. Can't say I really like the "MY" but it could be a lot worse. One size does not fit all and trying to please all of the people all of the time is a fools errand. I heard that the KWFM was not in the Tucson market any more. Has anyone picked it up elsewhere? Bill C. the CE. former CE 92.9. 1980-1996 or there abouts.
Regarding the KWFM call letters...how would someone find out if they have already been assigned to another company?
And further more-another new year is upon us and Tucson has got to be one of the worst radio formatted markets that I have ever heard. I travel somewhat, and when I come home to Tucson, I can expect nothing new,exciting or dare I say it, LIVE!!! If KWFM call letters are available, why doesn't someone in Tucson get them-and do something with them. People don't care about call letters, they remember dial positions.I know I do. What about formats-what is needed in this radio boring city. Country KIIM is just bout the only station that has some life. I read about an '60's and '70's oldies format wouldn't be able to be sold-that's your opinion-do some research in other markets and IF it's done right-you'll get some numbers and sell to advertisers. I'm still questioning why the Clear Channel COOL 92.9, and after that COOL 1450 went away. Are they really that removed from what adults want to hear? I guess they really don't care-they want the kids with no money listening.
