"New" KFRC and John Mack Flanagan Airchecks

Jimmy, you really don't know what you are talking about because John Mack Flanagan was a real jock who made you not only feel the music but he had a unique ability to connect with his audience. His recall with listeners was on par with Dr. Don Rose! At the time when John was at the Big 610 in PM Drive (particularly in 1978 when Les Garland was PD), the line-up was DDR, Big Tom Parker, Bob Anthony, John Mack, Marvelous Mark (McKay) through June (then Beverly Foxx before Robin Bail,ey arrived in Jan '79), Don Sainte Johnn, and finally Rick Shaw. KFRC was absoulutely on fire and it blew every other station away except for KGO!

Additionally, John Mack was exceptional in Middays (for Dave Van Stone and later Mike Preston) at KWSS in the mid to late 80's and finally PM Drive (for Bob Hamilton) on KSFO/KYA. Afternoons at KSFO/KYA never sounded so good. Any jock with the ability to connect with listeners are worth their weight in gold and to have him back on the air today in San Francisco would be a true gift!

I have worked with some of the best in the biz for the past 20 years not only as an air talent, but as an APD/MD and PD and there is nobody who can deliver the goods better than John Mack Flanagan! Enough said!

I agree. Johnny is one of the most naturally talented jocks I have ever worked with, going back decades. As one GM I worked for said "John touches people." This is not to downplay his hard work and the dues he paid, but a lot of other air personalities have worked hard, etc. and just don't have the talent to arise to the level he has.

SFstatic, that was very well put, Their is truth behind what you wrote, You only have to listen to 2 mins of John Mack Flanagans KSFO/KYA days that Dave Jackson just released, to hear the Total Connection with the listener!! Theres no need to prove a thing to Jimmythebasett, if he doesnt get it oh well, Everyday that goes by, with no radio here, is a waste, The DJs from the 70s here in this market are Overlooked, and we the listeners get cheated! With the XM/Siruis merger, If Bobby Ocean reads these posts, Tell Hugh Pantero to put on John Mack Flanagan, I will settle for VT, Its obvious that we dont stand a chance of hearing him on the air here!!!! Kenny in Concord

There are a lot of postings on John Mac Flannagan and some that are critical. Kenny in Concord has already responded to them.

My response is about the great times and radio stations of the time. In the mid to late 70s things were really cookin' at KFRC and the jocks had a lot to talk about.

The point is that today these great jocks of our recent past including Bobby Ocean also need a great sounding radio station to have the impact they once had. KOIT-FM seems to be the dominate music station today but does it ever lack excitment?

I never did get to hear JMF on KOMY and the owner did not allow enough time for it to develop into a great radio station of today.

So a new radio station with a defined mission, some of our familiar talents along with some new ones. But where do we go?

As much as most of us have said we don't like the music, the Wolf does have a defined mission along with the personalities.

On another note, I saw Pope Bennedict walking up Key Avenue to Candle Stick Hill the other day.

Hmmmm...... I wounder what he was doing?

I agree totally, I was a hack. Don't mention me with Osh and Dr. Don. I just worked cheap, that's how I stayed on the air 26 years 2 months. But I did truly, truly care about the people who turned on the radio. Please don't take that away from me. I don't think anyone cared about the audience more than me. -John-

I gaurantee you John, If i had the money to buy a Radio Station it would be in this Market, and I would have you totally in charge, GM, PD, and The Bay Area would finally have Radio with meaning, Something that isnt heard today in this Immediate area! I often wonder if we will ever Hear Radio worth listening to! Kenny in Concord

"I agree totally, I was a hack. Don't mention me with Osh and Dr. Don."

I'm going to have to disagree with you there, John. I have always considered you up there with the best, including some of the LA greats I grew up with - like The Real Don Steele, Dave Hull, and a select few others including Bobby Ocean. It's hard to compare Dr. Don to anybody else, so I won't go there.

That connection with the audience is what makes you great - and the stuff that you talked about with your audience was always interesting. Also - your voice was one of the best, period. Somebody asked me a few years ago who I thought the best voices in Bay Area broadcasting were, and I said you were definitely the best male voice - period.

Speaking as someone who's only professional radio gig was as a board op while in college, I've always had a "closet" love for the medium of radio... the powerful one-on-one connection you make, even if it's just a one-way conversation. No other medium gives you the personal connection that you get with radio. KGO is one of the few stations that still get that.

Growing up in Modesto, in the central valley, we were lucky enough to get KFRC's signal pretty darn well, even on a transistor radio. What a thrill it would be to turn on the Big 610 to hear these voices that were larger than life to me. Who didn't love waking up with Dr. Don? Then, I remember getting home from school and listening religiously to John Mack Flanagan. What a voice... What a personality... What a lucky guy to have what must be the greatest job in the world. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has memories of that time ingrained.

What a surprising thrill it was for me when I attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the mid 80's and find an old reel-to-reel tape in the college station (KCPR) studios of I.D.'s he had recorded as what seemed like a favor years before. I took a lot of joy in carting them up and telling my fellow D.J.'s about my memories of growing up listening to this god-like voice coming out of the radio. How cool it was to have JMF appear regularly on my little college production... if even for only :04 at a time.

John has had an impact on the lives of people who he'll never know about. That's the kind of thing that you can't say about very many people we're listening to coming out of our radios today. My kids are certainly missing out on that. Fortunately, the sounds of our youth live on through the internet...

Thanks John for all the great memories.

Rick

Would JMF want to make a return to radio on a "real" station now given the landscape and the changes in the biz? If his ratings performance on KWSS and KSFO/KYA are any indication, I for one think that he would be the perfect choice for a "fun" Contemporary, Classic Hits or Oldies station. Your thoughts?

Im positive John Mack Flanagan would make the Ratings for any format that was Classic Hits or Oldies format! Lkeller, has me convinced that there will be no Oldies station here ever again due to Our Age! I think its pethedic that age dictates what will be played, So the Real Loosers are the Overlooked DJs in this Oldies Free Bay Area, and people who enjoy The Duke of Earl, One Fine Day, Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, Louie, Louie, Return to Sender, The Wanderer, Cry Like A Baby, Rock N Roll Lullaby, Up Around the Bend, Down on the Corner, Black is Black, Joy to the World, and the list goes on and on, with songs you wont hear on Terrestrial Radio!! It amazes me that you cant hear Elvis here in the Bay Area!!! John Mack Flanagan and a 60s 70s format is one I would pay for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kenny in Concord

"John Mack Flanagan and a 60s 70s format is one I would pay for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Then Kenny - you should make like your "handle" here and convince XM to give John Mack a show. As far as I know, all of their shows are tracked - John could keep his day job, have fun on the radio again, make some extra income, and his fans would get to hear him again...those with XM, in any case.

Lkeller, yes Ive e-mailed XM so many times, They informed me they would look into it! John even being VT would be better than the Jukebox style they seem to go on with! Having John Mack And Bobby Ocean, would be a real ratings Boost for XM! I cant believe they dont put on DJs all the time! Kenny in Concord

The only person who would make a decision like that is the VP of Programming for XM, John Zellner. He's a smart cat, but I think sending some John Mack audio would be the smart thing to do from KFRC circa 1977 or 1978 would be the best way to showcase (in my opinion). Here's a link from KFRC in '77: http://audio.lns.com/ms_airchecks/KFRC/KFRC%20San%20Francisco%2012-28-77%20(1).mp3

Dave, those John Mack Flanagan airchecks are out of sight! That is radio! This proves after listening to Johns air checks, the bay Area needs JMF back on the air! The 1990 KSFO/KYA were great! Leave it to you to dig up some of the Best Radio from the past! Wow! Youve gotta get my Wolfman Jack/ John Mack Flanagan tape from me it was 1991, when John Had Wolfman Jack on his show! You can have it Dave, the whole collection! I have Chris Edwards doing "The Golden Gate Greats" on 1260 KYA filling in for Candi Chamberlin in 1979 August to be exact! Kenny in Concord

I remember that Chris Edwards fill-in for Candi back then. As for the last hour of KYA with J. Parker Antrim & Paula Kelly, I recorded that with my Sony SRF-A100 radio that I won from KFRC in 1983. Great quality.
