Mike Preston Named VP/Programming For KCBS-A & KFRC/San Francisco
CBS RADIO/SEATTLE VP/CHR Programming and Top 40 KBKS (KISS 106.1) PD MIKE PRESTON has been named VP/Programming for sister News KCBS-A and Classic Hits KFRC/SAN FRANCISCO, effective MONDAY, APRIL 3.

Additionally, KEN KOHL will begin advising CBS RADIO’s six SAN FRANCISCO stations as VP/News and Talk Programming, effective immediately. He will continue in his role as VP/GM for Talk KIFR (106.9 FREE FM), reporting to CBS RADIO/SAN FRANCISCO SVP and Market Manager DOUG HARVILL.

"MIKE has contributed tremendously to the success of CBS RADIO and I’m thrilled to have him join the SAN FRANCISCO team in this programming capacity," said Harvill. "KEN did a terrific job launching 106.9 FREE FM and we’re fortunate to be able to utilize his extensive news and talk experience as an advisor to the entire cluster of stations."

ED CAVAGNARO continues as Dir./News and Programming for KCBS-AM. "ED is a valued and senior member of the KCBS management team," added HARVILL. "His veteran leadership has proved invaluable as we’ve rapidly expanded the powerful brand of KCBS to streaming, podcasting, a successful website and soon an FM HD2 channel."

I saw this on All Access and in Billboard Radio Monitor this morning and had to go back and read that first line a few times.

Read this slowly:

Mike Preston, who had been programming CHR/Top 40 in Seattle, is now going to program All News KCBS and "Classic Hits" KFRC.

Was programming: CHR/Top 40.

Will be programming: News and "Classic Hits."

This should be doggone interesting, don't you think?

KFRC

Nah. You're reading way too much into it.

Cat, I wasn't reading it as "KCBS and KFRC-FM will be switching to CHR!!!" Instead, I was seeing it as being interesting that he's coming from a CHR background and will be programming an all-news station and a "classic hits" (they're not "Oldies" ... "Blandies" maybe?) station.

...is this the same Preston who programmed 94.5 KWSS/San Jose circa 1983-88ish?

If so, seems suitable for oldies. Although the thought of a Top40/CHR KFRC is awfully appealing (to those of us who were here when it happened, before)!

what a treat that would be to have KFRC back as a top 40 powerhouse in the Bay Area, mabae there is hope for KFRC's Future

yeah, and they can always make a am shakeup, putting news on 1550 and oldies on 740 or the other way around, keeping 740 news and moving oldies to 1550<P ID="signature">______________

Oldies would be a waste of time on 1550, but most likely better than what's on the station right now! Oldies would be good I guess along with the A's Baseball games! Top 40/CHR on 99.7 against KMEL 106.1 and Wild 94.9 has a long long long shot of being a success.

Mike Preston will be one of the most significant management additions to any Bay Area radio station in this decade. That may not be saying much, but there is a very small pool of talent from which to draw. Preston will add a discipline and dynamic sorely lacking in Bay Area radio.
Preston may do as much for KCBS as he will for KFRC. Don't know if anyone can save KFRC except to start over from scratch. Maybe Top 40 is the answer, but please.....not another hip hop, or agressively urban jukebox.

Congrats to CBS for the vision and good luck to MP.

Is this the same Mike Preston who was Mark Preston on FM102/KSFM
Sacramento in the late 70's & early 80's?

KFRC

Still- solid, dynamic programming crosses format and background boundaries.

nope

Makes no sense. The legendary brand of KFRC means zip, zero, nada to anybody under about 40-45. The call letters KFRC have no credibility or legend with those who would listen to today's CHR.

740 is #5 with almost a 4 share. Why would they ever move that format to 1550?

As much as I hate to agree with that, it's true. KFRC's last great moment as a CHR would be the Gerry Cagle era, which ended in very early 1984. That's 22 years ago. Even a 16 year old from then would be 38 now. And a 16 year old from the launch of KFRC as a Top 40 is now 56. Oldies or gold-skewing A/C are the only places where the call letters have a built-in advantage, used properly. Otherwise, they're just four letters in a row...at a time when very few contemporary stations identify themselves with letters instead of a "name".

What a memory! Yup, same guy.

KCBS

Does this mean David G. Hall's mitts are off KCBS?

And if that is so, that is good news.

What was Hall's role at KCBS? I thought he was only responsible for having turned KNX/1070 from a great news station into an unlistenable mess.

Re: nope

From what I understand, our nearest equivalent - Clear Channel's Star 101.3 - bills well, despite mediocre ratings. If CBS were to compete for CHR with 99.7 (or another of their FM frequencies), put together a good local format (meaning not just cookie-cutter voice-tracked crap), plus a line up of local live DJs, a lot of promotion and participation in Bay Area events...more like KIIS in LA than the dull "Star" here, perhaps they'd have a solid money-maker.

Funny, KNX has made some significant gains in the ratings, especially in younger demos. I find it more listenable than before... which means I did not listen previously and now it is my preferred news and traffic station.

Caveat: it absolutely tanked in 25-54 in February, with the month well below a 1 share in this demo.
