New KZOK morning show

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going out to buy some knitting needles so I can pierce my eardrums in case I hear him. He ruined Carolla's show.

EXACTLY! I know Ed Zachary what you mean... what an unbelievably BAD idea!

To trot out a cliche -

Just when you think you've heard everything ...

To echo others - an incredibly bad idea. Even if listeners tune in for the "train wreck", does anyone want listeners coming to their station hoping for a negative?

Bring in non-northwest guy who is generally considered an ass and comes off that way on air.

Won't sell for advertisers and listeners will hate it.

The six month prediction is spot on.

While I actually like him and still listen to his show in Kansas City... Example: Lazlo..

Dear Danny,

It's okay; they don't like Michael Savage either.

Best of luck.

Signed,
One of your soon-to-be KZOK listeners

Twenty four posts about how this is the wrong decision for KZOK (okay, maybe minus a couple) even before he cracks the mic open for the first time.

He's done his first show, yet none of the armchair programmers have constructive criticism about his show.

Shouldn't be surprised, pretty typical around here.

The only thing I could think of that would hold Danny back would be the fact that he's not a "Seattle" guy... It's hard to get "in the clique" in Seattle.

People in Seattle actually have a lot in common with him (I'm from White Center, I get it)

  • People in Seattle like drugs
  • People in Seattle love to drink
  • People in Seattle love transvestites / transgender types
  • People in Seattle love humor (and Danny is a funny guy if you actually listen to HIM)
  • People in Seattle love controversy

I'd say he might be a great fit.. If people open up and give the guy a chance and he gets involved in the cities CULTURE.. not just the community, but the CULTURE!

Seattle has culture?

Seattle does still have some culture to show. It began to dissolve somewhat in the late 60's when the massive migration of the Cals began. Seattle became a remote outpost of LA. I think any air personality who comes in from out of the area is going to be a bit frustrated and befuddled a while by the locals. Go to the streets and ask anyone if they were "born and raised" and chances are the numbers will be incredibly low.

looks like maybe aint no one tuned in round these parts? what is poster AQH's, opinion on this new morning KZOK event thats been ridiculed by 24 armchair programmers? have you tuned in at least for the average 1/4 hour, then left for greener pastures of morning radio?

I have no constructive criticism because I haven't tuned in. I heard enough of him to last a lifetime during his catastrophic stint with Carolla.

If you are pretty sure you aren't going to like something, it is pretty understandable to not be in a rush to sample it or to review it. Rushing to sample and review should be for the fans or for those truly open-minded.

I listened to a fair amount of the 8 o'clock hour this morning. What did I hear? Talk about a sister marrying her dead sister's husband. Puffing about finding a place to ski off a cliff with a parachute like James Bond. How much he loves to work. Needing a doctor to get a Ambien prescription so he can settle down and sleep. Wanting to "punch his wife in the head last tonight" but making it clear it is "just an expression". Loving porn but not the rough, degrading stuff. Etc. Sort of what I expected.

I'll probably flip by to sample it a bit further when I have the time and inclination to flip around the dial but I know now what I knew beforehand: that KZOK will not be my main morning option or even in the top 4-6. I'd take Vanderpool over Bonduce 10 times out of 10. I'd take a half decent song of any type on almost any station over Bonduce talking / bragging / joking 8 or 9 times out of 10. I'd take turning the radio off over Bonduce (or a lot of other morning talk) most of the time, especially after the initial mild curiosity wears off.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it might be because: 1) for the hour I listened Sara talked more than Danny (and sounded close to Ana Kelly and might draw attention to the show for herself), 2) they threw a few songs in here and there and 3) they had Will Dixon in the conversation a bit to give a Seattle voice and avoid being totally outsider.

It was worse than I expected in terms of the fairly rough and unusual sound of his voice though. I doubt I could take more than 5 minutes of it straight even if the topic wasn't cheesy or boring. He tends to rush in on what Sara said too, but that is his personality.

Do I think it will get good ratings or last in the long run? No. I think how long it will last depends how long his contract has to run and if they have another stop in mind.

So that is one mini-review. Anyone listen to it and decide to make it a main destination? Anyone think it was "good radio" or "good radio from a business perspective" and that he is going to get good ratings or stay long-term?

Is Vanderpool back to nights? I don't see him on the webpage. Plus the link for Vanderpool at the bottom of the main KZOK page is now a broken link.

BTW--"Tell Danny to move on."

Carolla fans will get that.

If these "interests" are for KZOK's Scott V., then I'd say "So long." geesh

Barack Obama, Alan Grayson, Seattle Mariners, Dennis Kucinich, Donn Bennett Drum Studio, Al Franken, Dave Niehaus Memorial page, Left Action, Sammamish High School, Alaska Airlines, OutriggerHawaii.com, Jay Inslee, "The Joy of Painting" with Bob Ross, Seattle Sounders FC, Old School Seattle Rockand 47 more

What?

Vanderpool

I'm less interested in what Vanderpool puts on his Facebook (if that is what the list is referring to), than what he puts on the air. He didn't get into politics that much and if he did it was usually with skepticism and amusement rather than the voice of a strong partisan.

If he has left KZOK totally (instead of taking a time out), that would somewhat surprise and disappoint me. I thought he was perhaps the most interesting personality on the station, if one wanted wry observations & well-told little stories. He was one of the few DJs I listened pretty attentively to and steadily and usually enjoyed doing so.

If he did leave and wants back in somewhere, I hope another station picks him up though it might be tough to find the right spot. The new KMTT might be good... if they are hiring and depending what they want. Pulling folks from KZOK? He might be able to do some of that, if they let the playlist get looser and include other parts of the 80s and 90s rock world.

I miss Vanderpool as well. Doubt he would end up at KMTT- those folks seem to be heading towards a Jack format but classic rock instead of classic hits. Who needs talent? We'll play our 30 year old songs and take our 3 rating to the bank. Which is sad, but I fear accurate....

You are probably right.

Just sharing my 2 cents about a DJ that generally did it right for this listener.
