Yeah, it’s good not to take yourself so seriously. Perhaps a fitting way to wrap this all up is to go serious for a moment though. There’s a lot at stake here and it goes way beyond love of format.
An investment was made in talent. There’s a lot of lifeless radio in our town. To some this is radio reality and it’s all about tight programming. To them talent doesn’t matter. Even with all the great programming on WCBS-FM, if they went automated, they wouldn’t be nearly as successful. Perhaps the bean counters would be happy but too often the listeners are forgotten in the business of radio.
As I heard the retro AT40, I thought how little of that would fly today. A long distance dedication – maybe- as long as it can be talked up on a song intro. I’m not disagreeing with PPM data but I still believe there is a happy medium.
What’s next? I like Mike Perry but he’s not live and local but it’s business today cutting costs at every turn. There’s some momentum lost between J.T and Tony Mann but still so much better than nothing. Tom Kent has a lot of fine programming available. I thought he would have found a place at night but I can understand the thinking in not wanting to give up spots. Saturday nights may be more fitting to bring on a 70’s themed show with Tom or whoever.
Ratings determine everything and I would suspect even those in the business at a competing company may be quietly routing for Magic to be highly successful. If the case can be made that talent did make a difference, perhaps for them ...it can buy just a little more time.....
