New Midday show on 105.3 The Fan

Salisbury? Throw in some Jack HAM and some Lord Earl of SANDWICH and Newy's got himself a great meal!

OK- new guy posting here after plenty of lurking since the whole Russ Martin mess set off. I'm just a fan, not a radio pro, so I know that makes my opinion less valued in the eyes of some. But I'm an avid fan and I basically speak in public for a living so I'd like to think I'm a fan with a skill-set which helps me understand some aspects of your business.

If have to say that nothing on The Fan has appealed to me until now. But I like Newie. I always thought that The Goodfellas was pretty decent radio and certainly a world better than what ESPN is rolling out currently on middays.

Trouble is that I rarely have time to take in talk radio in the middle of the day. And from what little I understand of radio ratings, neither do a lot of other people.

Given that Jagger is out of place on a sports station and that Ben and Skin don't seem ready for drive time (at least not to my ears,) does this move really matter?

Or is getting a foot in the door during middays the first step in drawing ratings away from the Ticket or ESPN?

Someone with some radio IQ give me a clue please.

N/A ;D

Nah, really, the main thing here is that it attracts attention, getting some known names on board. Then, when the Cowboys sign on, that will give the station plenty of default recognition/respect. The reality here is that they'll probably never overtake The Ticket, and they, like KESN, will switch folks around, throw in a "big catch" every so often, and basically be in a permanent reactive mode based on what The Ticket does.

Me, I'd rather see/hear something creative and different. Guy talk bores me. Maybe do sports talk on a sports station? Hmmm....

How long before Salisbury shows his nuts to a female co-worker?

KESN does notrhing but sports talk on a sports station during morning drive. And have you seen how Mike and Mike do compared to Dunham and Miller amongst Men 25-54? I have, and it's not pretty.

Guy talk may bore YOU. But check the numbers, there's a whole lot of men aged 25-54 who find Dunham and Miller to be their preferred radio choice.

And yours is the kind of comment that cracks me up. The job of the people at the Ticket isn't to talk sports, it's to attract listeners that they can sell to advertisers. If they could do that by JUST talking sports, they would. But if they can attract more listeners by mixing guy talk with sports talk, why not do it? Because purists and message board posters will whine that they're not really a sports station?

Probably right after Greggo gets a nose bleed....Again!

Wait, I just read that Ben and Skin are the new mid day show. You guys are wrong, it's Ben and Skin.... Wake up. What idiot would change programming that fast? Gavin Spittle and David Henry aren't THAT stupid. They would have learned for DLR and O&A, right?

NOPE. ::)

A buddy inside 105.3 tells me they're also looking to hire Randy Myers ("The Nasty Boy", formerly of The Ticket and ESPN) as their producer. He used to work with The Goodfellas show over at ESPN and is good friends with both hosts. From what everyone knows of the guy, it's a terrible choice for producer, but just another Gavin Spittle mistake. He's also one of three finalists for the APD position, as well. What's happening at The Fan?

And coming to middays in three or four weeks: Eliza & Eliza.

Those of you familiar with the old Commodor 64 will know what I am talking about. ;)

APD? Are you kidding me? What do they need an APD for? Gavin can screw this one up all by himself.

APD? Did Lee Harris get blown out? He's been the APD for a long time. He was the "axe" man when KLLI switched from country to talk. Lee is a good dude. I hope he didn't get popped.

Yes, he did...about 2 weeks ago. And you're totally right about Lee. He was the back bone of that station. I have no doubt that Little Spittle is suffering since I don't think he knew half of what Lee did to keep that station afloat.

As someone with no insight into the radio business, it seems to me that The Fan is trying to get up to speed as fast as possible. They aren't letting the shows get some time to establish themselves. Jagger lost an hour with this Newy coming on board, which is your only known product, granted it's not a sports show. Personally, I think Jagger is just running out his contract. Someone at CBS decided not to pay for two shows not on the air. Sacrifice your morning show ratings for a while and see what you can replace it with later.

To me, they are going to compare themselves to Russ' ratings in their afternoon drive. Switching formats happens, but I'm sure someone wants to see results quickly. I don't know what Russ was grabbing. Maybe really high in key demos. I would guess at least better than average. The station won't be happy if they suddenly fall off the map behind The Hardline and Galloway. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more show changes before football spring training.

I didn't think it was a bright idea to start a third sports station. Outside of the Cowboys, there isn't a lot of sports talk in this town. What happens April - August if the Stars and Mavs aren't playoff contenders and the Rangers already seem to be preparing for 2010? Everything seems to be geared towards being the Cowboys radio home, but the past host stations don't seem to have fallen apart without them. And, I would guess they are dropping NASCAR. The whole last third of the NASCAR season would be in conflict with Cowboy games.

Man that's bs. Lee was a LOT of fun to work for. I sure hope all works out for him and his wife. I remember during holiday time Lee and I would be 2/3 of the boards ops keeping that station going. Ahh the good ole days.

According to the DMN, the NASCAR rights is what is blocking the deal so far for 105.3. It seems 105.3 still has 2 years left on the contract to carry the NASCAR events and the Cowboys games conflict with some of the events.

I don't think being a 3rd station will be a problem. There are a number of markets with 3 or even 4 (Houston, Baltimore) sports stations.

I have been somewhat surprised by how poorly KRLD-FM has been launched. With KESN forced to carry the national morning show, it would have been smart to have a local sports show on in AM drive. When KTCK goes to the non-sports segments at 6:30, 7:10, 8:10, etc., KRLD-FM could have had a show on that talked about "our teams in our town" and be the only choice for that in AM drive.

KESN will always be forced to clear some national programming. And ESPN doesn't really care how competitive the O&Os are...the O&Os have always been about national clearance and brand building for the "worldwide leader." So, it will always be at a disadvantage in those timeslots.

Yep. the description that was told to me was TMS has an 'ironclad' contract to run on 105.3. And they have no desire to play 2nd fiddle to the cowboys and get bumped around to other stations.

Uh, I think they're still going to cover and talk about the Cowboys. The only difference between KTCK before they carried the games and while they carried the games was the actual game broadcast. They had pre and post game shows, they had the coach's and owner's shows, they had Mickey Spagnola, and they had heavy day after game coverage. I don't think things are going to change much now that they're going back to not carrying the games.
