New Orleans TV Situation

WWL 4's news cast are broadcasting from their studios in Baton Rouge. KHOU 11 from Houston is hosting the internet stream!

Good job WWL TV! I've been watching them all morning. Those 2 at the desk now have been up since 6am yesterday!

WWL is actually using a studio in the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. <P ID="signature">______________

I can't seem to get the stream anymore from WLOX, it went out about an hour ago. I'm amazed it stayed on that long, with the wind gusts at the studio over 100mph. Can't believe they had power for that long, maybe they were using backup.
WWL-TV is still on, but breaking up quite a bit. They're starting to feel the wind in Baton Ruge.
Total structural failure I'm hearing in New Orleans on the levee system. Many buildings getting damaged.
My prayers are with you all.

KTVK in Phoenix, a Belo station, is sending Mike Watkiss (reporter), a photographer, an assignment editor and and engineer to help the WWL team. Also heard additional relief help was being organized from Belo's Dallas and Houston stations.

I understand WLOX started to lose their roof, so they had to evacuate the station.

Hurricane Katrina Update
WLOX has suffered roof damage due to the high winds of Hurricane Katrina. Some parts of the building are under 1 foot of water.
Updates of storm coverage are being supplied from WLOX's sister stations.
 
What are the Baton Rouge stations doing? (was Re: WLOX)

I've just heard a report on a Seattle radio station that portions of the Superdome's roof have been taken off. The midday host of said station was just in New Orleans a few weeks ago. <P ID="signature">______________

In retrospect, those comments were harsh. But, compared to WDSU-6, the WWL coverage was just not very good. WDSU had a full studio up and running, while WWL did not have the audio of a phone call yet put up titles and thought that it was working. Prior to 11PM CST, WWL's New Orleans coverage was incredible, as WDSU aired a remote broadcast of WESH.

WDSU had the upper hand thanks to WAPT-16, but if a person had a TV on and could choose between WWL-4 and WDSU-6, I can't believe that many would watch WWL.

(As I said in the last post, I applaud those who are working to ensure New Orleans television coverage of the events as they happen. Unfortunately, the technology was apparently not working in their favor. Apologies to those offended.)

Reminds me last year when Charley aimed at Tampa Bay -- WTSP ch.10 evacuated from its St. Pete studios to a government access studio in Clearwater; as a result, the presentation looked late-1970s to early-1980s at best, and they were off the air twice while repositioning its STL and cable links between the studios (once when they moved to Clearwater, again when they moved back home). The other stations stayed where they are.

The following day, the reviewers panned WTSP's coverage, looking bush-league compared to the rest. But still, WTSP did the best they could during a situation like that. Yes, they didn't look like what they used to be, but, they're only human.

The other Belo stations also helped out when Houston was hit by tropical storm Allison in 2001. KVUE (Austin) and WFAA (Dallas) sent reporters to relieve KHOU's reporters, who had been on the air for 24 hours straight.

But here's the thing, when you're a top station in a market, people depend on you and really just want to hear the voice and see the face of the person that they trust to deliver the news to them every day. It's more about just being there for people than it is to have all the bells and whistles and fancy graphics.
