New PD at ESPN 103

Just noticed that Tom Lee is the new program director for KESN 103.3. He previously was PD at CBS sportstalker WIP 610 in Philadelphia. Lee is also overseeing the launch of ESPN Deportes on KNIT 1480AM. The interesting part about that is, aside from KNIT also being an ESPN affiliate, it's owned by JCE Licenses (based in Florida) and has no apparent connection to ABC/Citadel properties.

They're also running liners about a new midday show.

Did anyone listen to WIP before bringing this guy down? If they banned the phrase "the cowboys suck, yeah, they really suck) then WIP would be dead air. Not even in the same ballpark as WFAN.

Thats for the national replacement for Dan Patrick. There's nobody left in town locally to do (or even try) a midday show here. Besides, the less we hear of Dave Shore the better.

PD

I would like to think that 103.3 ESPN would take someone locally for the departing Dan Patrick, and alas, you would have to have someone strong to do it... with that time slot, I would think that Chuck Cooperstien would work, however with the travel schedule of the Mavericks, that probably would not work-- though with the new PD, I am hoping (fingers really crossed) that the LITTLE BALL OF HATE is either removed or at least used as a segment person, and not as a host.

I don't mean to knock someone, but I have listened to Jen for a year now, and there is nothing, (I REALLY MEAN THIS) NOTHING that she brings to the table on a day to day basis. ONCE in a while she has a gem, but for the most part, she is not a HOST, she is at best, a second bannana!

There are a few people out there on the beach that could do a great job for ESPN RADIO Dallas, but they have to really want it bad enough to make it work on a day to day basis!

Lets just hope that whom ever they pick, is strong enough to tackle this market well!

Just a thought!

I really hope they go local 12-3p...I think Mike Taylor would be a good choice, he is entertaining and fresh.

Name 3.

Because most of the people 'out there on the beach' are on the beach because, to put it mildly, the suck.

And no offense to some of the peeps you guys have run in (and out) of 990, but if dudes like Mike Fisher or Leon Simon 'had anything' they'd still be on the air...

Dan Patrick was lousy and the Little Ball of Hate ain't got nothing....But at least it was local... Thank God D Patrick is out. He thought he thinks he is good and he really sucks. 103.3 needs to put someone local. How could market #5 use network programming for Sports talk when you have all the major sports in town and even if you have to search the country for someone bring someone to work locally. Can't stress that enough. Look at BaD radio on the ticket. Neither is from Dallas and they have done great. I would love to hear Chris Arnold again or Leon Simon....

They can do it for the same reason that ABC didn't sell radio disney or ESPN when they sold out- because for them it's not about making good radio- it's about clearing network inventory...

From what I've been told, ESPN demands that you clear mike and mike in teh morning and Dan PAtrick- no ifs ands or buts...

Well I guess if you really had to stress the point of locals that might be on the beach... Frankly.. Mike Fisher-- I mean.. hell--KLIF let him go, and we know the demise of KFCD (Schum's rule)... however, if ESPN could some how co-habitate with him, thats not a bad choice... I could also see Timm Mathews if he was offered the gig, maybe even, teaming him up with Steve Dennis* (*I know he is not on the beach being that he works in TV)... but you are getting the idea... Leon Simon is GOOD, but he needs someone just as strong- to make sure that the "ship" is on course...

Just a thought!

Yep. Aside from clearing national ad sales, it is also about brand building...i.e. sports = ESPN whether on cable TV, broadcast TV (all ABC sports programming became "ESPN on ABC" programming), internet, radio, etc.

I imagine there is local programming only on KESN so the station drew some listeners...otherwise it would have been like 1190 and Fox Sports Radio. I think they figured out in Dallas, there better be some significant time dedicated to the Cowboys. Otherwise, no one would listen, because people in Dallas really care about the Cowboys and not what the Lions or Raiders are planning to do in the next game. Not picking on us...that's true of every market where most people are nuts about one team. Talk CFMJ 640 Toronto has a 2 hour "Leafs Lunch" show every day to talk about the Maple Leafs and the NHL all year round...and CFMJ is not a sports station; it's like WBAP...a talk station with the rights to the local NHL team. Only it's in Toronto where they love that franchise above all.

Okay, you said 'great job'. It's a complete contradiction to include great and Mike Fisher in the same thought. Waitm I take that back, it's not a contradiction, it's a complete physical impossibility...

FIsher sucks. or blows. Or whatever that combination is (suows? Blcks?) there's been a reason that he's been unable to get ratings on at least 2, if not 3 different stations. He suows/blcks.

Fisher was fine as a beat writer. And he's fine on teh Cowboys. But he's painful to listen to on a day to day basis. And believe me, I've done it. He's just not that good. Much less 'great'.

Same with TV Timm. Have you listened to him? He's just not that interesting. Same with Steve Dennis...

And let's see, you've gone from 'people on teh beach that could do a GREAT job" to "well Leon is good if he has someone good with him..."

That tells me that he's good alongside Wally Lynn or Norm Hitzges, but he's squat by himself...And coonsidering how good those 2 guys are, that tells me that Leon is a marginal talent at best....

Now granted, he's not as spare as some of the peeps you guys have run through 990 (What absolute moron thought that giving a failed traffic reporter a sports show was a good idea?)

Not if his lack of success in Austin is any indication. :-\

Maybe. I always thoughthe had 'something' when i heard him filling in on the Ticket...

But there's a big difference between potential and greatness. K Scott has potential, but (as Austin proved) needs to prove himself as a local 'great'.

Dave Michaels thesis is that there's all this great local talent just sitting on the beach. Yet when puched, his 'great talent' are guys that have failed at least twice.

I'll give anybody some slack and write off one failure to bad circumstances, bad station, poor bosses, no marketing whatever. But at some point if you've failed on multiple stations, when does the realization come in that they're just not good.

Fisher? He just sucks. Bad. And that's Dave's idea of 'great talent'?

Explains why 990 is making absolutely no impact on the ratings so far...

Mind if I chime in?

Sports talk in this town is unbearable. We have the Ticket, which was an epiphany and Mike Rhyner will ALWAYS be hailed as Adonis or something for that shrewd fight. However, the urbane 'man talk' is too much. They are blatant about their disregard for the fans, and let's be honest, fans can be a complete thrashing but they are still your numbers. The issue for the genuine sports homer, they have sage thoughts. Norm is a legend, Musers (sans Gordon) understands the minutia of sport and the Hardliners just love most of them. Then there is always Sports Sterm with his inane rants.

So, up comes KESN, attempting to get the LOCAL fan to listen to their crap. And they shovel Mike & Mike (ESPN RADIO... it seems you can't say their name with saying that close out as well... geesh.) Steve and Ball O'Hate was oil and vinegar. Randy and Co?! Please. Galloway has nothing for some reason, Coop (who is genius) can't carry an audience with an Econoliner. Local talent is the key, ESPN. You suck, admit it. It's OK. Take your 12 steps and do something to gain the "real sports" fans in this market who like a little of guy talk, but not slammed with it. Oh yeah, and remember the 'Good Fellas'? Anyone? Bueller?

Fish, forget it. Chris, leave movie reviews alone and I'll take you back - but he does need a sidekick. Leon, nice but he too needs a sounding board. Whatever happened with the Ticket rejects 'Hot Spot'? I know DRA went to produce, but he has been taken off air completely. Just begin with the complete devastation of Mike & Mike and go downward before that spiral you are currently in goes out of control and makes us all go to the noon blog on DallasNews.com for sports chat. ;D

Just for the record: if you want to call yourself "ESPN Radio", you MUST carry Mike & Mike.
The ESPN stations in other NFL markets have the same issues 103.3 has with that. On Monday morning sports fans here want to hear about the Cowboys; not the Giants, Jets, Eagles & Patriots.
