New Radio Format

With all the changes in radio in the last few years, and the economic pressures to running a profitable station, perhaps the collected gentry could brainstorm a new, low cost, high impact 18-34 radio format. Ideas?

Pop-Rock is starting to gain traction in some markets (ala KQKQ-Omaha, KMMX-Lubbock, KKOB-Albq, WWSR-Lima, WHTS-Grand Rapids, KZZU-Spokane, WKRQ-Cincinnati).

Noone wants to hear Alternative music...it suxs and always has suxed...and ratings in every city in the U.S. sux with Alternative Nerd Rock..... People want Louder Rock like Disturbed, Motley Crue, and a return to a 80s type sound..... Thats whats coming in cause Alternative music was a fad for the mid 90s-00.

I HAVEN'T CHECKED NUMBERS IN OTHER MARKETS, BUT I THINK THE "MOVIN' " RHYTHMIC AC FORMAT WOULD DO WELL IN CLEVELAND.
PERSONALLY, I'D LOVE TO SEE THE DANCE FORMAT RE-EMERGE, BUT THAT WOULD BE RATINGS SUICIDE.

AS FAR AS A NEW FORMAT NATIONALLY? OLD SCHOOL HIP HOP AND R&B? ANY THOUGHTS?

Really? Which people want 80s metal to be a permanent format? I can't find them.

80s metal and loud rock suffers just as badly as alternative rock... because you can only get your face bashed in SO much on a continuous basis. WMMS can get away with "Big Hair Wednesdays" because it isn't a full-blown format change.

Alt. Rock always has had the problem of getting audience vs. artistic quality. Yeah, you can play Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica and Pearl Jam all you want, but what about Elvis Costello, Mazzy Star, Siouxie and the Banshees, Public Image Ltd. and Guster? (all of which I like, BTW)

I'd like is for a station to turn a pop/AAA mix and present it the way WMMS did in the early 80s. But put in the low-cost, low-frills context. Would it succeed in the ratings? Probably not... but I'm a sucker for the artistic quality.

Really Nathan? I'd like a return to 80s styled hard rock and metal. I think if you look in Pryor Oklahoma this weekend, you'd see a pretty good sized contingent that want that as well. I also saw a sold out Blossom recently for Iron Maiden, and I'm traveling to Chicago for a sold out Judas Priest/Black Sabbath (Heaven & Hell) show next month. Motley Crue recently sold about 100k of their new record in a time when no one is buying music, and I believe Judas Priest sold around that many as well recently.

The reason alt rock and metal went down the tubes is because people stopped wanting to be barraged with complaint rock. Gas prices, economy, war - it's bad enough without being beat up by it every time you turn on the radio as well. There's a reason a band that was dead and gone like Buckcherry can come back and sell a million records in a dead industry on the strength of a song about a good lay...because it's fun and takes your mind off how bad the real world is right now!

Bring on the 80s rock once again!
