New radios coming

The following companies recently announced plans for their first home HD Radio tuners: Cambridge SoundWorks, Denon, Integra, Niles, Onkyo and Sangean. Other first-time HD Radio suppliers by November will also include Rotel and RadioShack, which has offered the Boston Acoustics Recepter HD table radio but will begin offering two exclusive models in the fourth quarter. Or so says TWICE, (This Week In Consumer Electronics) which is a consumer electronics dealer magazine. Still noting for les than $199 that I saw. Here is a link to the story. http://twice.com/article/CA6373721.html

Since iBiquity gets a percentage of HD radio sales (so, in effect you pay for HD Radio up-front, so it really isn't "free"), I bet the prices will never get much under $199. Heck, my trusty RS analog PLL AM/FM radio was only $25, and I can DX with it up to 1000 miles, with just the internal ferrite-bar antenna - no need for dipole antennas in my house !

So you know this for sure? I've heard otherwise...the expense right now is not the licensing but the chipset. Like all electronics, that price will come down.

Yes, I read it just recently. There is no way the price of HD radios will even approach that of analog radios - so I guess, HD Radio will be history.

IBOCRocks: "Where did you hear it?"

Probably, in some worthless blog ! :D

Three under-$100 HD radios were introduced today. iBiquity believes they can get to the $50 point in 12 months.

1000-mile DX is nearly 100% AM, mono and with sickening fades, static bursts, etc. You may find it fun. Most call it "noise."

The < $100 radios were just for broadcasters, not the general public. The HD Radio Cartel should GIVE those radios to broadcasters, not charge them - but, look how they have bungled the BIG joke of the HD Radio rollout, with HD radios not selling. The price of HD radios will never get near analog radios, so they will never sell. I would rather have fading, than nothing at all with IBOC - I enjoy the fading, as I grew op on SW. If you find it noise, then that is YOUR opinion - it is better than hearing IBOC hash everywhere !

(thinking)

hmmm...let me see....If I spend $200 on an HD radio, I never have to spend another cent to listen to it.....

but what if someone gives me an XM radio?......
At $12.95/month its the gift that keeps on taking. .... If I choose not to spend money I can't listen to it.

I like the first thougth better..... ;D

hmmmmmm, let me see, no it is $300 for an HD Radio, and all I get, is lousy terrestrial radio full of lousy commercials - well, that is a no-brainer ! :)

They will be on sale in January to the general public for about $100. Broadcasters can order now.

iBiquity has been talikng about HD radios in the consumer marketplace for two years now - we will have to wait and see. Still if true, it probably will make no difference, since people would rather buy iPods, Satellite Radio, cell phones, PDAs, Internet Radio, Wireless Internet, etc. Terrestrial radio is a convenience, not an entertainment medium, such as, the above.

"When receiver prices drop, demand will explode. This is a tremendous myth. The Herald article quotes: "A recent Arbitron/Edison Media Research study found that more than one-third of Americans are interested in HD Radio, but nearly half said they would only purchase an HD Radio if it cost $100 or less."

And, please show a link to these < $100 HD radios - the last I read, was that they are being sold only to broadcasters, at a discount, for $100.

RadioStarOne: "What do you expect from David Whats his last name?"

I didn't get it.

Great, enjoyXM or Sirius or whatever you'd like. While you are listening to those broadcasters, the old line terrestrial broadcasters have to do something to survive newer competition, much as it did in the 40's & 50's when television came on the scene. Like it or not, HD is what broadcasters have decided on. You of course won't be concerned because you get your news and entertainment from another source. Let the competition begin.

But, only 1000 out of 13,500 stations are HD, and some of them have turned HD off. Most of these stations with HD are owned by Clear Channel, part of the HD Radio Cartel. You are living a fantasy - just because some stations are broadcasting in HD and more receivers are showing up in retailers, does not mean a thing - consumers are not interested, so this will make no difference. For example, look at the very poor sales figures for all HD Radios on Amazon.

You sir are looking for a fight. Your comments are a worthless repetition of the same old dishonest rap.

This thread is as nasty as any on even the Boston board..

Here's why I won't buy XM or Sirius:

It's a never-ending monthly payment, and I get more
content choices on web radio.

Here's why I won't buy a HD radio for my car:

It would double the value of my old car and it wouldn't provide
me anything I can't get on my cassettes, more or less.
(I'd buy a car CD/MP3 player first.)

Here's why I won't buy a HD radio for home:

There will be about 18 HD multicast stations in the Miami and WPB
markets by EOY if the CC and CBS press releases come true.
(See the story in August Extra Radio News: http://RadioPages.net/radio/2006augustextra.html )

But I can listen to those same stations and thousands more,
via the web.

If I'm listening to radio, I prefer live local content. Not canned
and/or syndicated.

Neither Sirius nor XM nor HD offers much of that. (Yes, I've
heard about the satellite regional weather and traffic reports.
Big deal. Also accessible on the web, anytime.)

When a multicast-capable clock radio becomes available
under $50, let me know. Since I don't sleep at my PC,
that'd be something web radio can't do.

Here's why I'd buy that: I don't really care for waking to
any of the stupid local morning shows. Too much BS, from
astrology and celebrity news to what the personalities did
last night or will do this weekend.

Gimme a break! People who dote on this junk really need to
get a life.
