New "Revolution" Coming To 107.3FM?

Looks like the folks over at Cox forgot how great O-Rock worked here.

Frequency swap scenario you suggest does sound interesting. As much as I wished WDBO-AM was still News Talk 580, I'd love to see the demise of News 96.5 by relegating it down to a mere translator at 107.3 FM. :)

But the 3-way swap would be a confusing one for the average listener of WPYO, which does fine where it is doing what it does. If and I say *if* the Alternative format actually has the potential Cox's marketing thinks it does in their launch advertising right now (meaning, those who miss O-rock and hate 'JRR) then swapping 96.5 and 107.3 sounds plausible and less of a shakeup for existing listeners. Still, I think it's on a translator right now for a reason. It's a gamble of a format these days. (97x in Tampa comes to mind, along with a slew of stations who aren't playing Alternative anymore in the past handful of years.) Although WXXJ in Jax has almost a 5 share in the last PPM book 12+...

X102.9 in Jax is more mainstream because they're the only full power "rock" station in Jacksonville. In Tampa Bay, 97X has a full power heritage rock competitor in 98Rock that allows them to be a bit more pop alternative. WJRR has nothing to worry about. As for your frequency swap scenario, no way is Cox gonna simply move "WDBO" off 96.5 after establishing it on the FM and no way are they gonna disrupt the success they've had on 95.3. The alternative rock on 107.3 is simply a place to maybe make a few more bucks or pair it up in sales with one of the other stations. Clear Channel does the same thing with The Beat on 104.5. This translator nonsense is getting ridiculous. How many do you have now in Orlando? 6 of them? Just littering the dial.....

I plan to check this one out when I visit Altamonte next month. How is the signal in altamonte? I'd imagine it's drivable but it may drop out here and there. Granted I do not drive but I'd have it on in a friend's car.

WDBO-FM isn't going anywhere, let alone move to a translator. It's possible news-talk may move to 95.3 with Power moving to 96.5; however, that largely depends on the numbers. If it can be shown that Power will generate more revenue on 96.5 than news-talk, then there may be an argument for a frequency swap. Aside from that, WDBO-FM is staying "as is" on 96.5 FM.

I should have said "I kid, I kid" after my remark about hoping WDBO-FM moves to a translator. I realize it wouldn't make any sense to do that. Honestly, not expecting the "pop/alt" X to do very well at 107.3, but that remains to be seen. The format is very likely on the spot it should be in, a translator signal relay of an HD2. However, as more of these "fill-in" niche-like translators take shape and fill in the holes around the full-strength counterparts, it really makes trying to listen to a decent distant signal difficult. (I know that's no one's priority at the commission, but it's nice to be able to catch an out of market, or slightly out-of-market signal for a change every once in a while.) But money talks...

Their imaging is pretty good, & I think in addition to WJRR's audience, they might also be targeting some of XL, Amp, & Mix's audience altogether.
I'm not a big fan of power rotations since I listen to the radio more than the "average" listener.
It hasn't been a week yet & I am already sick of hearing Lorde, Imagine Dragons, & Bastille, but I do like the Gold/90's Alternative selections.

On a side note, I'm still waiting for a Rhythmic AC in Orlando.
Hot 100.9, a Clear Channel radio station in Albuquerque, is saved on my iHeartRadio, as they play every single song I like in these genres: Old School Freestyle, 80's, 90's, Dance, Hip-Hop, & R&B.
Surprisingly, they mix it up there pretty well.

So far it sounds closer to 97X in Tampa. WXXJ in Jax doesn't play Lorde and they play a lot more of the 90's/00's.

Definitely different than 97X (though I'd agree it's closer in sound to X107.3 than WXXJ), as WSUN's playlist is much wider, a bit more "indie", and not as pop-oriented or "high rotation". More traditional "modern rock" than "Alt 40".

Notably absent from X107.3 are some more recent alternative hits that are in high rotation at 97X, such as Jack White's "Lazaretto". I suspect with X107.3, Cox is playing it "safe and familiar". Even their "gold" selections are about as safe as it gets for alternative.

X is awful

Nowhere like X in Tampa or Jax. Sounds like Indie rock, ugh....
