New Rock station coming to DFW?

The station features Classic Hard Rock from bands like Iron Maiden/Judas Priest to 80’s Rock like Van Halen/Ratt to 90’s icons like Metallica/Soundgarden to New Rock from Buckcherry/Dirty Honey while promoting current touring bands like Tesla/Extreme and Tool. Three ways this could go.
1. Online.
2. HD Subchannel.
3. KEGL flip.
 
The post does say “radio station” though the definition of that has become murky in recent years.

I agree it is most likely some sort of LPFM or an HD channel.

Random thought: Keep an ear on KFZO, which is now a lonely stepchild owned by a holding company that might lease the signal to an outside programmer.

i think this is gonna be a internet streaming station. i doubt any of the major radio companies are flipping to a rock station, and if 97.1 flips, it's gonna be spanish or a spoken word format like News/Talk goes full sports talk with Fox Sports Radio taking over or even pick up ESPN Radio syndication.

iHeart isn’t going to pick up ESPN which is a competitor to their FSN. They’ve been dropping affiliations of ESPN in favor of FSN for a while now.

iHeart already has news/talk in the typical sense covered on KFXR. With the demos that format brings, no way they’re putting that programming on 97.1.

Maybe iHeart doesn’t know what to do with it thus Freak continues. However, I’d suggest making it either a full fledged sports station or a hot talk station as a last ditch effort. What they’ve been doing clearly hasn’t and isn’t going to work.

I’d say Spanish is most likely if they go a music route. Lonestar prevents a rock format that leans in to the 80s, and 103-7 has the newer stuff covered. They’re very limited with what they can do with 97.1. The rock ship sailed when they decided to flip the Eagle and give KVIL an opening.

Buckcherry hasn't came out with anything for like the past 10 years and their only well-known songs are about to be 20 years old. I would assume since Dirty Honey was mentioned, maybe some Greta Van Fleet, Volbeat, Five Finger Death Punch, Halestorm, Within Temptation, In This Moment, Falling in Reverse, Asking Alexandria, Bring Me the Horizon, Atreyu with some 2000s rock like Godsmack, Disturbed, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, System of a Down, Chevelle, Shinedown, Seether, etc. thrown in the mix. I hope it's not all hair bands with 90s grunge.

KEGL isn't flipping to rock. Ever. As far as it flipping to an all talk or news station is extremely doubtful as well. Having said that, iHeart makes some of the poorest programming decisions I've ever seen, so we could wake up tomorrow and it be playing polka or Irish folk music.


Chazz used the word "PROJECT" with him on a mic from what looks like a bedroom. That points directly to an online radio station. Also, the music, as described, is WAY OFF. The way it was described is 65-70% of what ultimately was the demise of "The Eagle".

Just opinions.

The problem with these online radio stations is that they're very expensive to run due to the extra digital music royalties. Online advertising sells for about 10% of on-air. You need at least 10,000 regular listeners to get any advertising at all. I expect these well-known personalities want to get paid. Most of the people I know who've tried these local online stations have run out of money after about 9 months. John Gorman in Cleveland lasted 5 years with his WowRadio. He ran out of money in 2021.

I'm sure it's cheaper than it was 20 years ago, but bandwidth also used to be expensive. One of the companies where I worked resumed streaming during the time I was there, but it traded out the bandwidth with one of the local providers. I can't imagine a single bandwidth provider doing a trade deal with an internet station. So, that's going to be a recurring cost. Margins are definitely tiny with streaming stations, and, even if popular, a decent chunk of ads is likely to pay by inquiry. The big companies can make money off of streaming by selling ads in blocks across the entire company, but even they don't make a fortune off of it. I know I still hear a handful of ads that tell you to use a code word when ordering, even on some of the larger companies' streams, and that's usually a dead giveaway that the station or company is only getting paid if someone buys.

Lots of individuals run single stations where they play music using Live 365 or other platforms. But their staffing costs are much lower than what's being proposed here, and their potential audience isn't limited to a single market. So sure, you can run a radio station out of your spare bedroom, but I doubt it will attract enough money to pay a full staff.
 
i'm sure its probably an local internet radio station, or an hd2 feed with an fm translator (which i doubt but possible) they will put on.
 
RadioInsight is also reporting a change is imminent.

If you are a paid subscriber there, an additional tidbit or two is also shared regarding 97.1's potential future. :)
