David E your thoughts?
Will this affect kuna FM?
I'm asking you David because you live out there.
We have not just KUNA but the two Entravision Spanish language stations, one Regional Mexican and one Contemporary. All 3 are Class A stations, not translators. The new station is a pair of translators that have failed in the past.
This is a very poor radio market with about 490,000 population and 50 AM, FM, Translators (including some silent ones). The revenue is 140th while population in 132nd.
Both Entravision's stations and KUNA are group owned. KUNA is a Press-Gazette operation, part of the ABC/CBS/FOX/Telemundo and others TV cluster. They sell as a group and both have huge power due to the local TV based cluster.
Stand-alone stations here have very little chance of success here. New Alpha averages 40% of the shares, News-Press and Entravision have over 10% each along with nearly 100% of the TV shares, RM has 15% and a variety of non-commercial stations have nearly 10% also. The only indie that does well is KGAY, which is very well established in the LGBTQ+ community which is large and prosperous.
I've had multiple opportunities to do Spanish formats myself here, with little capital requirements, but have declined in each instance. It's 60 hours of work a week for both of us and no foreseeable profit.
