New Sports Station Coming To DFW

None of this makes sense and I still think this is a stunt in itself. I mean come on freaker’s ball is in less than two weeks and this isn’t a push to draw more attention to the event and or push people to tune in Monday at 3? I dont buy this station is actually flipping for one second. Now more than ever after listening today

97.1 definitely needs a change, but to play devil’s advocate - could “The Freak” be a stunt name? Some of this is so coincidental it seems off.

Also, most of the songs they’re stunting with probably aren’t that popular with the KEGL audience or the potential “Freak” audience - IMO they run the risk of running potential listeners off from whatever they do considering the target is 25-54 men. I don’t know if Missy Elliott and Chic are popular with 25-54 year olds that would listen to rock or “guy talk.”

This. This and more this

I‘ll never forget the country station in my old place stunted for a week playing country/classic rock to promote their new morning show. They dumped Big d and bubba and went local

There is a rock song in the Eagles' The Long Run that has the word "freak" in its title. I'm sure that the Eagles weren't played on The Eagle, but "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" is still a rock song.

As stupid as this sounds why don’t they put the Eagle on 1190 KFXR, and simulcast it on 97.1 HD2? Would any of you listen to the Eagle on AM? It would sound horrible but it would be better than what’s on it now.
That’s not happening. 1190 serves a clearinghouse for iHeart’s in-house syndicated talk programming.

I’m pretty sure Klinger is one of iHeart’s personalities used on the premium choice feeds nationwide.

Still amazing to me that the almost once dead Alt 103.7 is now the de facto new rock station in DFW considering it couldn’t even crack a 2 share a year ago. I will give it to Audacy thar they knew what they were doing being persistent, but also it was semi handed to them with the death of both KDGE prior to Alt’s flip and now KEGL.
KDGE was handed to KVIL but the defeat of KEGL was a mixture of self-inflicted wounds and a PD change that brought a music reshuffle. That reshuffle brought in many KEGL tracks and they wound up pulling what seems to be a frustrated KEGL audience away quite quickly. After years of KEGL trouncing them it’s a stark reminder of how fast things can change.

If I were KVIL’s PD I’d be immediately studying and researching the viability of becoming “Dallas’ Rock Alternative” and testing a blend of Alternative and Active Rock currents to see if I could thread the needle between the two formats. The most successful Active and Alternative stations right now play a selection from both formats. It would be a great way to ward off competition from another flip as well.

Sean Ross of RadioInsight recently suggested that a quorum needs to be found between Alternative and Active where they need to share more songs. The success of the stations that pick and choose from both formats seem to indicate this. Perhaps it’s time to see if KVIL can take its ratings to the next level and become the one true destination for both rock and alternative.

I disagree. It was the death of Russ Martin followed by the Clo scandal. The double whammy cast a cloud on the station from which it could not recover. The timing of John Allers arriving at KVIL was coincidental.
I agree that the double whammy did put KEGL into a hole but I think it would be remiss to not credit Allers for changing the music and image of KVIL. If KVIL just kept doing what it was doing pre-Allers I think KEGL would have eventually recovered or at least avoided outright collapse. KVIL was not playing what Dallas wanted to hear and the Russ Martin death and the Treehouse scandal ultimately would not have derailed KEGL permanently on their own. KEGL was going to hurt, mind you, but it was recoverable if KVIL did not change. The death blow should be rightfully credited to John Allers and his team.

I hope they use the weekend to celebrate and relax as well. They earned it. Starting Monday, they’ll have to keep it.

I don’t think the scandal or Russ’ death did 97.1 in. I have a hard time believing only a year after his passing ratings and revenue dropped that drastically. And, I can’t see an active rock listener turning into 103.7 to hear Radiohead. I also don’t see why I heart media would doom a good thing they have with 92.5 and import songs from 97.1 into their playlist when they’re literally the no. 2 ranked station in Dallas. I live 4 hours east of Dallas. But, following this format change (?) is the most fun I’ve had in radio since I left a few years ago and went to tv! For some reason, I’m glued and have been listening to the freak songs all night. I cant wait to listen to this marketing ploy and the Eagle to return to 97.1 Monday at 3

truly, Russ was the heart & soul of KEGL 97.1 The Eagle, he was apart of the top 40 version of the 80s, the hard rock version of the 90s, the resurrected version from 2010 until his premature death.

the scandal itself was the show's downfall if it wasn't Russ' death that was the end, and truth be told, Dan & Alfie seems checked out of it and couldn't really process the loss of Russ and Clo (in Clo's case, his arrest and their cutting ties with him), all the tragic behind the scenes stuff alone played a factor in the show's demise and the station too.

The Eagle's death was a combo of KVIL outsmarting KEGL by hiring the right people to go after it, the death of Russ, the Child Porn scandal of Clo, bringing the Mavs onto the station and it eating into listening time thus sending people to KZPS Lonestar 92.5 and KVIL Alt 103.7 as well as streaming and Sirius XM as well as Music Choice for those who still have cable or DirecTV, the weird timeslot of Ben & Skin as well as the RMS/Treehouse being 2-5 PM followed by a 2 hour 5-7 PM shift for the longest serving show of the 2 shows. the station's format struggles post Russ' death plus on top of that, a changing demographic that isn't majority white and too old for the target demo lead to it's downfall.

I agree with you, BigA.

If they do something like The Bone in Tampa, I can get 100% behind that.

"We talk about what we want" moniker is great - IF you're actually going to adhere to that.

However, all of the hires so far are from The Ticket and The Fan. Doesn't really add up. Done well, MALE TALK is a hit, but 90% of the time, it isn't done well at all.

I suspect a sound similar to the Bone is exactly what they're striving for. This isn't going to be a purely sports talk station in all probability.
