New Sports Station Coming To DFW

Remember that Mike Rhyner plays in a cover band. And iHeart loves sponsoring concerts.
As long as the concerts feature big-name artists, right? I mean, I really do not expect iHeart to invite Petty Theft to perform at this year's 106.1 KISS-FM Jingle Ball.

You're right, but just because they're doing a talk format doesn't mean they won't do concerts. Sean Hannity has hosted concerts in various cities around the country too. Although they tend to be country music. Concerts are a revenue stream, and they promote the station.

Just checked it out for giggles. There’s quite a bit of “I’m switching to 103.7” posts there. I just wish KXT or KNON got this level of passion.
Alt 103.7 has a decent library of formerly KEGL-exclusive songs that spin in their rotation. KXT doesn’t touch those. KEGL listeners switching to KVIL is more logical because KVIL is closer to their taste than KXT.

I agree. I’ve responded to KEGL listeners on other social media and I don’t actually recommend KXT as a substitute, it’s far too pop centric and soft. I just mean, I wish KXT and KNON got the level of attention and passion the Eagle has been receiving lately.

The new Facebook page is 971thefreak. However the meta in the page still says The Eagle Rocks. So they've changed the name but not the meta.
That is a common problem. I even have a little sticker on my monitor's frame that says "meta" as I often clone a page on my website to create a page for a new publication... but I forget the meta. Last week I reviewed in one tedious afternoon all 900 metas for each of my site's individual pages... and found over 20 errors. So what the station did is very common.

Only the results matter.
Awwww, yeah, it's big brain time. (I'll explain the meme/joke if no one gets it).

Perhaps iHeart was planning on flipping KEGL to a talk-based format all along? KEGL has had a talk-leaning feel to it for years, and it had driven the bulk of its library into the ground without many meaningful attempts to freshen things up. The music was stale and the station was propped up by Russ Martin for the late 2010’s until his death.

The addition of Ben & Skin and the Mavericks were the last straw for many KEGL listeners who were clearly frustrated. I still feel like KVIL emerging as a legitimate alternative for the most frustrated KVIL listeners was the deathblow; but perhaps it’s worth considering that the deathblow was in fact accelerating the inevitable. That KVIL taking much of the audience galvanized iHeart into action; that it was time to give KEGL the makeover they were slowly transitioning it to anyway.

That being said it’s clear there were still several KEGL listeners still tuning in. Hopefully KVIL will continue to service their needs for a long time to come.

Y’all might say im just overthinking this. Maybe I am. but, the longer they let this keep going, the more harm this does to their brand. I actually even question at this point if “the freak” name itself is just a placeholder name until after freaker’s ball on 10/17? I mean I can’t see 97.1 hosting another concert after this year anyway
What does "harm their brand" mean? The rock format on KEGL was on its last legs at best. Whatever reputation the brand had was in the past, in the Russ Martin glory days, etc.

Every format flip will have positive and negative reaction to it; it will take several months or more to figure if The Freak is a long-term success. Nothing about the name seems to me to be a placeholder. It's definitely outside of the norm and unique, but I think radio branding needs that nowadays.

The plan was only made in Septenever, right around with Don left. He wanted no part in talk format. From what my sources tell me, Rhyner didn’t agree to do this until last minute

And this is where the explanation of “big brain time” comes in. It means overthinking something to the point where it becomes ludicrously stupid. I had a feeling I was doing that.

Thanks for correcting the record.

My take is that the new format is aiming at the same target (mostly men) as the current format. So I'm not expecting a stunt.

In fact I wouldn't be totally shocked if they continue to play rock music from time to time.
I *Always* thought the

Rock N' SportZ radio would be amazing
there isn't always a game and overnight chatter could get stale... Especially in the off season ( here in Buffalo off season is March until September ) as we don't have playoff hockey here... but we have the sabres.
and, two seasons of weather,
July & Winter

A station in West Virginia tried that, with Mike and Mike in the morning, but now I believe they are straight classic rock.

This sound closest to the alternative WCYY in New England, which picked up Toucher and Rich from Boston's sports talker in mornings during their syndication push in the region.

WEDG 103•3 - was close to that....
ALL TALK morning show, music and then the NFL BILLS weekends, but the ratio wasn't even, the way it could have been -

I’m really curious to see how this station does in its first month
I’m sure KEGL will get a nice bump and with basketball starting it may do even better. I just think the morning show will not do well. They start a whole hour or two after everyone else.

That sort of format will take a while to mature in a crowded sports market. I'm sure they understood that and have planned for it.
