New Sports Station Coming

So they spent huge money to get an FM for ESPN in NY because.....

First of all they didn't buy the station. It's just an LMA. And they will use the station to obtain rights to events that will further ESPN's brand as "The Leader In Sports." The radio station isn't the brand. It's part of a multi-platform package that includes the cable channels, and a specific NYC sports web page. Radio supports all that in an integrated way. As I said, radio becomes a marketing tool for something else.

I wouldn't be surprised if they make an argument for ESPN Radio. 1080 is basically worthless after dark and 810 would be a nice upgrade as the alternative to 740.

LMA for now, but they will buy it out right when the option comes up. Yahoo Sports is the anchor. they will have to live shows, 10-1 is guys who worked at ESPN, and 1 to 4 is a host who is currentlyat Big 810

All irrelevant to the point that it will also stand on its own two feet as far as P&L are concerned, otherwise they wouldn't have made the deal.

And they didn't buy it because Emmis didn't want to sell it. No other reason.

Really? Name another FM station that Disney has bought in the last 3 years.

There are several FMs on the market right now in NYC. If they couldn't buy this frequency, there are two others they could have bought IF they wanted to. They don't want to own any more stations than they have now.

Regardless, this is a radio station whose purpose is to merchandise and market THE BRAND. The brand is bigger than the station.

No, the LMA is very relevant, because the cost is one big tax deduction. That would not have been the case if they bought the station.

Come on ... no right in their mind company "makes money" to pay taxes ... hence they don't need a tax write-off. I'm in agreement ... radio today is much more "promotion" of your other products ... ESPN Radio spends a lot of time pushing their TV (come on, they practically give away their feed for free), I bet every Clear Channel station spends 6 minutes a-8n hour promoting sponsor supported web sites & IHeartRadio (how it makes money, I don't know). If I can find a way to spend less to get "more" in other arenas I'm gonna do it.
