NEW SPORTS STATION

I can't envision WQAL moving to 98.5. Too much unnecessary work with pieces that doesn't need to be moved, and a completely different audience (Females) becomes affected.

OMW pointed out the fact that CBS registered the domains 923thefan.com and cbsclevelandsports.com. However I noticed that someone has registered 1041thefan.com but not 985thefan.com. So this begs the question could CBS be planning to launch 104.1 the fan and move classic rock to 92.3 and move the hot ac format to 98.5? (Perhaps a return of G98?)

Someone has also registered 1021thefan.com. So I don't know if its a decoy, or put Sports Talk on 102.1 and move WDOK to 98.5.

You know, it's more likely a decoy. There's NO way WDOK would move from 102.1, where's been for decades, to another frequency. That would be a huge publicity headache.

I agree, and (knowing nothing) I see no reason CBS would disrupt the Wall of Women for this. My gut tells me (again) that 102.1 and 104.1 go nowhere.

But as noted, CBS did move their hot AC (similar to Q104) in Boston to, oddly enough, 104.1, and put "The Sports Hub" on its former home of 98.5. And like there, they had a veteran rocker - which they extinguished (in its over-air form).

Still, I'm having a tough time buying into CBS moving Q or 'DOK.

As noted, the Halle Building is as quiet as a church mouse. They're working on this thing, and we're tilting at windmills with little or no information to back it up.

I'll still speculate, but I don't think ANYONE has a good read on what frequency this will use. And I've never said for sure that I think this will be "The Fan". Maybe they'll call it "The Ticket" a la Detroit? "The Fan" gets mentioned because CBS uses that name at a lot of its FM sports talkers.

About the only things I know for sure: There will be an FM sports station in Cleveland run by CBS, probably in the next few weeks. Andy Roth is the PD, and "Kiley and Booms" are the morning team. Anything else, nearly, seems to be up in the air.

What's to say that ALL of the "###thefan.com" domains - 92.3, 102.1 and 104.1 - are ALL decoys, and the little-known "thefan985.com," which CBS registered a long time ago for another decoy purpose, actually becomes THE real domain?

WDOK and WQAL are totally untouchable. WDOK has been in place on 102.1 since 1952. WQAL's been at 104.1 since 1972. Moreover, Q104 had stabilized a few years ago as an adult CHR after years of instability following Larry Morrow's departure. Why make them go through unnecessary upheaval AGAIN?

All signs practically point to 98.5. Whatever happens to 92.3 ("radio 92.3?" "92.3 NCX?") is ANYONE'S GUESS.

And don't forget said WFAN parttimer reportedly set to join "92.3 [98.5???] The [Whatever]" quietly has "taken the week off."

I may take a break for a day or two while we wait for more information about what happens. The rate this is going, it's kinda like waiting for white smoke to come from a chimney at the Halle... ;)

Interesting thing I've noticed is some new liners being used at WNCX, highlighting their personalities and how they've been in Cleveland forever because they like it here. Also heard another one talking about how Paula Balish was a person you trusted to play your music. Probably means nothing, but still made me take note considering some of the talk of classic rocks possible doom in Cleveland...

It isn't CBS, but Entercom displaced a long-established AC station in Kansas City in favor of a KMBZ simulcast. So it has happened.

As other threads said the 92.3 is going sports actually and as some are saying who knows,
maybe they could flip the 2 in a little while...

>>thefan985.com
If not for the fact that their nickname is actually the Sports Hub, CBS could use that in Boston. In fact they could park it there anyway, until they find they could use it elsewhere (...like in Cle. if they wind up switching freqs in awhile?)

I hope this new investment CBS is making doesn't doom NCX, WDOK and Q104 to budget cuts or more automation. "radio 92.3" sort of acted as insurance for those three stations from cutting any further than they already did.

Heck, something is going to have to replace Maxwell very soon - if not by Labor Day - and I hope it's not a syndie show like BOB&TOM or Free Beer and Hot Wings. I'd put Paula in morning drive if that were an option.

No kidding. All of you radio experts are going to look pretty silly whan none of this happens.

Dave? Dave?

You were saying?

;)

The current 2:00PM host on 92.3 The Fan said he he glad the new sports station, 92.3 The Fan is now on the air... He said, "This station has
been rumored for weeks but now it's a realty."

Goes to show, sometimes radio rumors do come true, even when rumors have been flying for almost five months. Even Ohio Media Watch didn't
believe the initial rumors until the rumors got way too loud to ignore.

Maybe CBS get it that Cleveland loves its sports radio and are willing to take a big risk on it. It will be interesting to see if CBS Cleveland moves this format to a more powerful signal in town. Keeping this on 92.3 FM doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Pulling this off dose make sense because
CBS Cleveland has deep pockets.

Adam has been following OMW, both the blog and our Twitter account, and has even read this board. :) He's probably too busy to be reading now...

The rumors have been around nearly two years, I believe...and seriously the past 6 months, and loud the past couple of months. CBS always wanted to do this, eventually, but got past the fact that they were trying to get out of markets below the top 10.

When it became apparent that they were basically stuck with the four stations here due to the horrible radio sales market, they decided to lock and load, and here we are.

A hat tip to "TANK1" for starting this whole thing!
