New Talent ID voiceover on Action News

Its a shame, but really it ended a year ago when Gary Papa died, because thats when the last of Kaye's in his prime intro was removed (6:00PM news had no changes since early 90's, and thus never needed an updated version)

Jeff probably could've done a few more updated ones. I know the last batch was really bad, but that might've been one of Kaye's off days. Afterall he had done new ones only a few month prior for action news weekend mornings that had Erica Grow in it. Those ones sounded perfectly fine.

It's Charlie. The new opens sound really good. I was kinda against them going with Charlie cause he pretty much all over the place but after hearing the opens, I'm alright with it.

Disagree. I think he has a voice that could fit, but there is no emotion in the voiceover. Jeff had a way to accent certain phrases and names to make it come to life. (Any good VO should be able to do this) Charlie has a nice deep voice, but it's too monotone. He could make it work, but what they have now is terrible.

I too agree that Jeff's last work was bad, but wonder if it was just a bad day too. His Erica Grow intros were good.

BTW, I know I probably sound like the typical Philly don't change a thing type person with what I have posted in here. I'm not however. I just really enjoyed jeff kaye, and am sad to see him go. He used to have such a great voice, and a way with promos.

Just listen to the way he intros this MDM.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3jVmM7Mah8 I feel like watching that now

I posted this here in this thread months ago, but here's his Action News intro at its peak (in my opinion)

That's the problem with the Philadelphia market. Nothing changes. Change can be good, but it takes a little bit of an adventurous attitude which is not possessed by most Philly natives. Can't figure out why the population in a major market wouldn't be just a tad more sophisticated, but the fact that it's the biggest major city with the least amount of movement among its population explains all you need to know. Same idea with the state as a whole. Nobody leaves from birth to death. Residents don't evolve with new technology, new ideas for the better, they simply cling to the same old, same old. Philly is the most non-progressive major market in the country and it's completely mind-boggling that a city with its history, numerous colleges, a rebirth in Center City culture, etc. can't move forward. Local TV news is passe to younger generations, it's simply not needed in one's life to stay informed and entertained. Too many other options to be self-informed. Technology has changed the landscape in one's life making traditional media optional. And people still get caught up about Action News, a worn out name if there ever was one in this the second decade of the 21st century? Again, absolutely mind-boggling. Sure, there will always be folks that say they like it because that's all they've done their entire lives, but the reality is in the big picture it's simply not that important today, no matter the propaganda local media executives want you to think.

Again, clearly bad, but only 5 months after the ones that started airing back in July 09, so maybe he had a cold when he did the ones earlier this year?

If your job is recording voice overs, and you have a relationship with an employer (station) for what, 30 years; do you really think you would be replaced solely on a "bad voice day?"

In his case, his job is his voice. The latest intros he cut did not pass muster, even when they attempted to use them, people here took notice and said how sad. Even the London Philharmonic version of Move Closer to Your World lasted longer.

Consider the following: This is the major media market owned and operated station that continued to use magnetic clouds long past life-cycle. That uses "Action News Blue" to this day. That uses an almost 40-year old theme. That is so afraid of change that they have yet to name a replacement sports person with the "title" to replace Gary Papa. And still rotates meteorologists Tynan/Joseph/Rodgers and Magee after their longtime 6 & 11 guy slowly retired from the scene, and left with an awesome tribute last December.

Maybe, time just caught up with them, and Jeff could not provide the service he was once depended on. Any other market, any other station would not have replaced their primary voice of God with the "next" voice -- who by the way (according to Wiki) is older than Jim Gardner.

Oh the horror, people choose to do something B dislikes. Strike Philadelphia from the civilized world. Wall us off so we can't spread our backwards ways any further. ;D

The fact that people don't subscribe to your philosophy doesn't constitute a problem, nor does the enjoyment of something you have some fetish-like obsession over mean they're somehow lacking in their lives.

Sorry they rejected your resume, but it happens.

Your a bit off, and really I was being sarcastic with the Philadelphia thing. Its not just a Philly thing. When HBO retired "HBO in space" in 1999 there was outcry.

Goto youtube look up old graphics, themes, whatever that was used for a while, and liked, from any station in any major city and you will find comments expressing how much that is missed.

Flyer78, I understand what your saying, However Jeff's voice has been while on the overall decline for some 10+ years now has at varied in each of his VTs. The ones he recorded last June sounded better then many of the ones in recent years. The 1st version recorded when Rick and Monica officially took over at 5:00 sounded almost as bad as the ones this past January, and was eventually rerecorded. It is my understanding that Kaye has battled throat cancer. So when I say off-day I mean his voice is often not in good form.

Now maybe your right, and his voice is remaining in an us usable state, but I feel that ch6 probably just threw in the towel and decided to move on regardless. Keep inmind, the man is retired, so its not really a case of pvi dumping someone who has worked with them for 30+ years.

Yeah Jeff retired from full time voiceover duties in '97 after had part of his larynx removed due to the cancer. He kept doing the opens for 6 as a favor to them and his friends at the station (he was colleagues with Jim Gardner and Dave Roberts in Buffalo).
