New weekend anchor on KPNX

Yes but is anyone watching?????

I watch 12 News occasionally at night. However, I prefer CBS5's "first 10 minutes" in the evenings (though not crazy about the newsteam) and the "final 10 minutes" in the mornings.

I'm not sure I would brag too hard. Yes, it is a much bigger market, but, these days, the weekend anchor position seems to be the "low man on the totem pole" -- the evening, morning, and 4pm anchors all are above him.

I tend to agree that evenings and mornings are more important in most markets. However, I would say that in "mature" markets, (where there are a lot of retirees), the evening news on the weekend is still quite important. The biggest difference is the 'casts are shorter, but there still is a nice segment of the audience (mostly mature), that tune in. That said, your point is well taken.

Mike should do well in Phoenix. He's still young, nice looking, and has a distinctive style. Good luck Mike, from the Tri.

So...North Carolina, eastern WA and now hot Phoenix in just a few years of work. Not many jobs out there that let you do that! (minus military of course)
Best wishes to Mike Gonzalez and I know he'll do great at KPNX. Hey, no green screen set there!

If we were having this discussion about Seattle television, I would agree with you. I think my Phoenix posters would agree that 12 News make little effort on Saturday evenings. Often the early newscast is pre-empted by sports and not much effort is put into the late newscast (using recorded forecasts from the am meterologist, etc.). Sunday evening seems to be more normal as you would expect in a top 15 market.

Perhaps the addition of Mike will signify a change in KPNX's philosophy toward Saturday evening news (I'm assuming that the current weekend anchor isn't going anywhere and they are adding Mike as a co-anchor).

Not being in the market, I don't have a feel for how much effort 12 News is putting into weekends. You are correct, in Seattle, all newscasts are important. Whether this signals a change in direction for 12 News is anyone's guess. I did some website bio searches and some limited on-line viewing, and Phoenix seems to be a pretty decent tv news market, albeit with an abundance of "pretty people", which is not uncommon in many larger markets, unfortunate on some levels.

KNAZ is a sad, sorry, sickening shell of its own self. For the past 10 yrs or so there has been NO source for TV news in Northern Arizona. Their situation is just like KNDO here in Yakima - they went from a full news operation to a tiny sales office and one reporter taping for KNDU. A lot happens in Yakima and Ellensburg - we don't care about a crash in Pasco!!

When KNAZ discontinued its local newscasts, Gannett/TEGNA promised that there would be 2 reporters stationed there full-time and they would contribute to the KPNX newscasts. However, they never seemed to have more than 1 N. Arizona bureau reporter. And, right now, I'm not sure that they have anyone in Flagstaff full-time. News in Flagstaff is VERY hard to get unless it is a murder or bad accident of some sort.

As for the Phoenix newscasts on Saturdays, it just seems like KPNX hasn't been trying recently. About a month ago, the anchor was obviously there by herself with recorded weather (around noon, by the weekend am weather anchor) and recorded sports.

To add context to my earlier comments, it should be noted that KPNX only does 1 hour worth of news on Saturday and Sunday evenings (6pm and 10pm on Saturdays, 5:30pm and 10pm on Sundays). It is pretty much the least amount of any station in the market and the early newscast is, sometimes, pre-empted by sporting or entertainment events.. They tend to have exactly one live reporter (sometimes) on Saturday evenings. (This is why I'm saying that they are not trying very hard.)

Perhaps the addition of a co-anchor signals a change in the previous philosophy.

Other than being a bit further away, Flagstaff is little different than other mid-sized college towns within a reasonable driving distance of a major market. I'm talking about cities like Athens GA and my hometown of Bloomington IN. Neither has its own commercial stations physically located in town (Bloomington's WTTV, the CBS affiliate for the Indianapolis market since 2015, left the city completely in the 1970s, and Athens has never had its own commercial stations AFAIK), and little gets reported from there, other than university-related functions and the occasional murder or weather event.

Athens had WNEG (CBS) on channel 32 with a full news operation as NewsChannel 32, then they went to America One and a few other networks - now they are MeTV and WGTA.

Very true!

IIRC, WNEG-TV was licensed and physically located in Toccoa GA, not Athens, at least until UGA bought the station.

I wonder when Mike is actually going to show up in Phoenix. It sure seems to be taking a long time since the announcement.

He's probably unpacking everything as we speak in PHX. All I've seen lately is Jason Valentine and the young woman on KVEW doing the 5PM news, so Mike's gone for good.

Well...he wasn’t unpacking yesterday. Mike anchored the 5:00 cast yesterday (7/16) on kapp kvew. Perhaps he has changed his mind.
