New York Talk Radio

12+ ratings don't mean much when it comes to talk radio, but the Air America bashers don't let that stop them when it suits their purposes. Therefore, I'm wondering how they're going to spin the latest 12+ shares for New York which show WABC (Limbaugh and Hannity) DOWN by a whopping 29 percent since last fall, while WLIB (Air America) is UP 8 percent. Yes, I know that WLIB (with its lousy signal) is still far behind, but...

WOR was also down, but only a little.

There's a simple answer to this question. They're down so much since last fall because listenership was probably above average thanks to the elections.

I also think you'll see stations with progressive talk start picking up more steam as we build up to the next election.

Well we know AAR and others have a target to shoot for...Franken is already consistently defeating O'Reilly in demographics (that was reported i believe in December of last year) so one down....He is inching (very slowly)
on Limbaugh in demographics and had beat him once at AAR debut (April of last year) in demographics...but that level was not held/sustained... so that target is a long way away for the moment. Overall viewer ship still needs a significant boost to catch up and not sure if it will for the moment..Conservatives have the advantage for now.....but hey we libs are patient and glad we have positive growth....even it is slow...im cool as long as we go up.

I doubt he'll ever beat Limbaugh. Avoiding politics, Limbaugh still has a better delivery and entertainment elements. Franken still has the Oy, Oy, Oy Show... nuff said.

I suspect Randi Rhodes will eventually be the number one AA show and she has beaten Limbaugh before. Her accent irritates people, but it does grow on you. I learned to tolerate Leykis and Rehm, so I can handle anything.

It might also have something to do with the sharp drop in Bush's popularity and in support for the Iraq war. I would think that people who are disillusioned with Bush and the war would be less likely to listen to Bush cheerleaders. That may also account for WLIB/Air America's better ratings in New York.

Well, I don't think it's that. Someone brought up a good point on that other board: WABC's got a huge chunk of day set aside for two hosts who aren't local anymore. Rush and Hannity don't talk about NYC issues, and that's going to cause a drop.

Granted, this is still a trend. It could simply be a bad month. It happens all the time. If WABC has 2 or 3 books with a downward trend, then someone should start sweating. On the flip side, if WLIB has 2 or 3 books with real upward movement, then something's working.

But I think a lot of people who post here get a little too excited over trends, especially 12+.

Rush and Hannity haven't been local for years and were certainly national last fall when WABC had much better ratings. WABC's programs haven't changed since then.

They have had several books since last fall, all showing a downward trend for WABC. The winter book was a full point down from fall, etc.

It's not just here. The right wing pundits and bloggers have been getting off on Air America's mediocre 12+ shares in most markets. Too bad the 25-54 numbers aren't as widely available.

This sounds OT--but terror is a local issue, albeit semi-local--has anyone forgotten 9/11? With the way some of the AAR suporters are--YES! What about the so called Freedom Museum plans at Ground Zero--the proposal DOES NOT talk about 9/11--instead it's an Anti-American politically driven piece of hatred talking about things from slavery to Gitmo--WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH 9/11? Nothing, except America bashing!

There are also immigration problems in the tri-state area--especially in Danbury where that city's Republican Mayor has stirred the pot by asking state police to become like the Minutemen Project out west. Budgets are an issue as well and the New Jersey governor's race next year is the hottest ticket around given all the political instability that state has had to face. Some national issues have an impact on the NYC area. Are you asking that NYC secede from the nation the way Quebec wants to do so from Canada?

And has anyone forgotten about John Gambling and Curtis and Kuby? Or does the vitriol get concentrated all the time with Rush and Hannity? What about WOR's Bob Grant, who briefly went national a few years ago--he's local. And for the most AAR has no live local hosts for NYC--that is one they couldn't afford!

Well, I will give you that the ratings don't mean anything--it's like those unscientific polls you hear for a major story. But, sometimes you know some teens DON'T watch MTV or listen to Top 40 radio. Maybe some are thinking, I'll have a responsibility in this country one day--have a family, find a job, but yet be weary of the war we are in--one that was declared via a Jihad on 9/11/2001.

So far, Ed Schultz is kicking Randi's butt in station clearances. It would be very interesting to see what would happen if another New York station picks up Ed Schultz and the two went head to head in the number one market. It would also be interesting to see what would happen if somebody picked up Thom Hartmann to go up against Franken. Or Stephanie Miller v Jerry! ... Jerry!

Randi beat Limbaugh? They were on the same station in West Palm.

They're still on the same station (WJNO, which picks up both their syndicated feeds). Apparently, her claim is that she gets better ratings, although it's hard to compare them, since she's on during PM drive and he's not.

She used to beat him before Clear Channel bought WJNO and moved Limbaugh into what was her time slot.<P ID="signature">______________

Well, yes but when she beat him, Rush was on a real dog of a station...Randi's station, WJNO, had a news department, other high profile local shows (Jack Cole!) and a much better signal than the station that had Rush - WBZT - which was a mishmash of 2nd tier syndicated programming (Rush excepted!) and brokered shows. Not trying to take anything away from Randi, but the comparison isn't really fair.
