I'd like to see some discussion on this. Is local news a luxury or necessity for radio today? Seems a lot of radio stations everywhere are opting for more music, less news or no news at all. Up for discussion!

I see nothing wrong with a sixty second news break at the top of the hour. Short enough not to lose listeners once they realise it's only a minute but yet long enough for the basic headlines.

I agree, and considering the mess our education system is in, people - particularly young people - need to have at least some exposure to things outside of their self-centered little world.
 
a small market station i worked at had news for 90 sec at the top of every hour round the clock... and it was a very music intensive station. listeners seemed to like it... i think no matter how big matket you are in or what kind of format there needs to be news. local news.
 
Agreed. Not only as a public service, but a "no-brainer" sales package.
