Newscaster farewells, appropriate?

Seems like each time a newscaster leaves there is some kind of little farewell blurb, well in Tucson Jennifer Wadells last night was Friday they did a 10 minute segment of goodbyes from fellow workers at KGUN 9. As much as people might like her she will be forgotten in a short span of time. What exactly is the news value of this?

Well, we can't have it both ways. It seems that a lot of people here complain when newscasters are not given a "proper" send-off. Then, we complain when they are too long?!? The proper length probably depends on how long Waddell was at the station.

The sendoff or lack of one, depends on the situation when the employee leaves the station. Someone who is well liked with the viewing public and has secured a new position in a higher market would probably get a sendoff (i.e. Jodi Applegate when she joined NBC in New York). If the employee is jumping ship to another station in the same market, I would think it would be kept quiet with very little fan fare. Then there is the situation where a station does not wish to extend the contract of an employee either due to lack of performance or just does not fit into the station's "mold" and usually they just disappear with the statement that "is not longer working at K%$^. We wish him/her well in their future endeavors" or "is pursuing other interests away from this station".

Another one is that they have "decided to spend more time with their family".:D
