Next big AC hits

I love the new John Mayer/Taylor Swift song "Half Of My Heart."
That's got to be bad. I heard "Say" by John Mayer (that's what the station's web site called it) on the station that plays smooth jazz around here (weekends only). The result of adding Taylor Swift to THAT can't be good.

At the same time, at least it would supposedly be soft.

No AC plays more Daughtry than WSB-FM/Atlanta. They play too much of that entire pop-rock genre and that's why I think they are underperforming considering they are the only AC in the market. Someone in that market should flip to a normal AC without so much Daughtry.

My only issue with "Half Of My Heart" is that we don;t get more Taylor on it. She sings, at best, two lines. For something being touted as a duet, it really isn't. I agree its much better than Heartbreak Warfare. Breakeven looks like it's going to be a big hit after all. Good song.

I agree. Still, I think having her name on it will help the song. Breakeven climbed to #4 this week.

I agree. At least most of their songs have not had much staying power. WSB-FM is one of the worst AC's in the country, IMO. They do well because they really don't have competition I guess. Terrible almost.

I see the CBS AC's are playing California Gurls by Katy Perry a lot - it may be because she's going to be on David Letterman (CBS) or something, because not many of the other corp's stations are on it. I don't see that song being a big AC hit or being a staple like "Hot N Cold"...there is just better material for AC out there right now. Something about it just seems out of place.

I think the biggest/best AC hits for the rest of the year will be "Breakeven", "Half Of My Heart", and "Life After You." I like Five For Fighting's "Slice'' and Colbie's "I Never Told You" also. Just about 9-10 more weeks and it'll be all-Christmas.

My guess is that it's Jim Ryan's influence. He always pushed the envelope at WLTW and now he is doing the same for CBS ACs.

Cox A/C's on the whole are pretty bad. Way TOO conservative on current music. And I'm one who believes you should be careful and not play too many of them. I've read where they only update their music once a year, so there must be some real burn out on some titles.

Is that station still "Lite"? No station that pushes the envelope should be called Lite.

I agree that "California Gurls" does not seem suitable for the mainstream AC format. Hot AC, sure. But not mainstream AC.

Ouch... now there's a scary thought.

Cox just now added "Need You Now" and "Hey Soul Sister" to B98.5 in Atlanta. Insane. They are definitely the worst, but I believe most of their AC stations are strange. B98 sounds like an AC from several years ago. Heck, I have yet to find a Cox music station I do like.

California Gurls is just wrong, especially when there is a lot better AC material out there right now. The beat/sound is too extreme and I find the lyrics juvinile. Maybe CBS is wanting to play it because it was such a big hit with CHR and is a summertime song about women, who they are targeting. Like I said, they seem to be the only ones really on it.

One of the most respected A/C's in America..WBEB in Philadelphia is playing it. But no Snoop Dog and they edited "Sex" out of the line "Sex On The Beach." They don't play anything that doesn't test very well with their female audience. So, as I generally agree on thoughts of songs like this, this song may be an exception to normal thinking. I also think its seasonal too; not sure this flies if its the dead of winter.

Ouch... now there's a scary thought.

I am surprised more stations are not on Lady Gaga's "Alejandro." It's a little different sounding, but it seems like it could work. It's certainly more AC friendly than "California Gurls" and I like it more personally...I thought that song might be GaGa's first AC success but it's pretty much stalled at #15, which isn't really high enough for a lot of AC's to add it.

There are a lot of good songs for AC right now. "Life After You" isn't that bad now because it seems like it is the only Daughtry song I am hearing besides "Home." "Haven't Met You Yet" and "Live Like We're Dying" will be headed to recurrent very soon which will open up some more space. Heck, "Already Gone" could also by the way things are going with it. I am so tired of the Lady Antebellum song...and it doesn't look like it's going anywhere. Hopefully some of the good ones like "Breakeven" and "Half Of My Heart" will keep making good gains.

Actually, Lady Gaga's first AC hit was probably "Paparazzi". I'm noticing that "Just Dance" is now making its way to AC stations. ;D

Dial Global's AC format does play "California Gurls" and they also edit out the word "sex" in verse two, and of course without Snoop's rap although the reference to him in said verse remains. I wonder if that is a standard edit made specifically for AC stations.

I'm confused. Dial Global dropped what had been Format 41 in 2006. Their only other AC format was hot AC.

Incidentally, that hot AC format was mainstream back in the day and I guess it evolved. I'll mention that on the other topic.

There is a song I hear on international streams that I think could be a huge AC hit in the U.S if given a chance..."Heartless" by Justin Nozuka. Check it out on youtube, it is such a wonderful song. If AC played it I could see it crossing over to CHR, kind of like "Haven't Met You Yet" did.

It's sad that "California Gurls", as tacky as it is, is ahead of ''Half of My Heart" in the AC chart. HoMH is much more AC appropriate and is probably the fastest John Mayer hit there has been. California Gurls sounds out of place in October on an AC station!

"Whataya Want From Me" is the AC song that refuses to die- it is still on the chart but flirts with being moved to recurrent every week. It just has to drop to #11.

Is it still mostly the CBS ACs playing "California Gurls"? I agree it sounds both out of place in October and on the AC format in general.
