Next format flip?

KDAY is on the verge of a format flip, from what I've heard. But it looks like it's going brokered.

If KLOS doesn't improve soon, it could have a meeting with the Grim Reaper.

In terms of CBS stations, the only station remotely in danger is KTWV-FM. It is tied with Jack for the lowest rating out of all the CBS FM stations. Still, JACK has low overhead, compared to KTWV.

Last time I've checked (Radio-Online ratings system is down), the CC stations are safe. KYSR MIGHT be the lone sheep out, but I think it's still doing decently.

Other then those stations, I don't know.

The morning show is considerably up from the last quarter of 2012. They have a new PD, so they likely have hopes the music dayparts can be improved.

Jack is considerably above KRTH and KTWV in the sales demos. KTWV and KRTH are screeching for significant modifications if not total changes.

Still, JACK has low overhead, compared to KTWV.

Jack and KTWV have about the same cost structure. There are only insignificant differences in the programming costs.

Hearing music changes on KTWV. They're subtle and are not surprisingly, R&B. I can guess where they're going, especially considering his rep. I don't for one second believe that KRTH is down and out just yet. There's no reason why it can't be adjusted...

KTWV goes after KHHT and attempts to expand the rhythmic / r&b adult base.

KRTH goes after KBIG. KRTH for several years has been more of a gold-based AC than a classic hits station, so the adjustment is not as significant as it seems.

In cases like this, "follow the money" is as important as "where is the hole?"

I've been saying on these boards, for at least a year if not longer, that CBS needs to slowly transition KTWV to a Hot AC/Adult CHR competitor to KBIG. Now that it is #1 in 6+ and #3 in 25 to 54- it seems like the most likely station to need a challenger. KTWV can be the KAMP lite version much like KBIG is the KIIS lite version.

It makes more sense to keep the traditional "urban" core that KTWV has had and transition into a rhythmic station on that station. KRTH, being almost a full AC right now would be the more practical way of getting into the KBIG camp without losing all revenue.

David, please 'splain somethin' to me. (Said in my best Ricky Ricardo voice.) How can you call KRTH a "gold-based AC station"? Even KOST and KYXY play songs more recent than 1999's Smooth. That and Selena's I Could Fall In Love are the only two 1990s songs that KRTH plays. KRTH also plays Super Freak, I Feel For You, Boogie Wonderland and I Love Rock 'N Roll, which ain't exactly gonna be heard on the Love Songs on the KOST program.

It has been fairly widely commented that the KRTH "flavor" sounds more AC than classic hits... a bit less tempo and rhythm driven.

Early AC stations like John Lund's WGAR in Cleveland were predominantly non-rock gold driven, with very few current songs. Quite a few AC stations in that era played few currents and also did not play the 50's gold and did not play the more rock tunes, thus the denomination as gold-based AC.

Found this on the KJLH Wikipedia article ---and yes I know , it's Wikipedia ::)

Changes

As of late summer L.A. will be losing KDAY for the second time due to a buyout and format change. and KHHT Returns to KJLH 102.3 once again. as KJLH-FM Radio Free returns to 92.3 FM, two frequencies.

The KDAY part is true. The KJLH part isn't.

It's Wikipedia, where a couple of years ago, Bill Ballance was listed as one of KRLA's 11-10 men "through the 1960s."

The soon-to-be new owners of KDAY, Phoenix New Media, currently operate "URadio", a listener-driven Chinese Top 40 station. (It's their only radio station. They run several cable nets in China) It will be interesting to see if they bring some version of that stateside.

What about KXOS?

They were just purchased 8 months ago, and are operated by a company that knows and does nothing other than Spanish language radio. If they shift format, as they have done 4 or 5 times in the last few years during their LMA with Emmis, they will almost certainly continue to program something in Spanish.

If CBS "blows up" KTWV-94.7 (which I think is very possible), I suspect it would be replaced by an all-sports station (if the company can get play-by-play rights to one or two local pro teams) or a simulcast of KNX-1070.

Los Angeles may never again have a professional football team but we'll eventually have 15 all-sports stations! That's something!

All that thinking is invalidated by the recent hire of a music PD to program KRTH and KTWV.
