Next Media Wilmington

There were adjustments made to the WKXB tower a little over a year ago. There is now a null in the KXB signal to the NW so the Capitol Raleigh 99.9 signal could cover the area as it was suppose to. A deal was struck by Capitol and Next Media to change the Antenna alignment. Capitol paid for the antenna and all work done on the KXB tower. The 99.9 signal out of Raleigh is about as good as it is going to get there.

I looked up WNCM's authorization on fcc.gov and they were able to be licensed to Garysburg because WWDW, Alberta, Va. has applied to move to 107.7 FM. The authorization specifies that no testing of the Garysburg, NC facility will commence until WWDW is granted a license for their move to 107.7. ROanoke Rapids-based public radio outlet WZRU 90.1 FM will change its city of license from Roanoke Rapids to Garysburg to allow 103.1 to move its city of license to Sharpsburg and stay within FCC rules for a city of license change.

Wow...HUGE news! I used to work for that cluster(____) in the good ole' Port City. The higher up's made some "interesting" decisions while I was there. First thing they did when they bought us was get rid of the morning team on 98.3 WAZO that was rated #1 morning show by the local paper. Then, they replaced them with a show out of Jacksonville/Greenville/New Bern (Jo-Jo, Jamie, & Flave). People HATED that show.

Then they dump John Stevens from his position as Ops Manager, a move I NEVER understood. The guy just knows how to program a station and he's very good at what he does.

Then, they kill the heritage rock station in leu of a spanish station. Great move, fellas.

Now, this. Makes me sad I didn't stick it out there. I loved the area, loved the station I worked for, loved our listeners, and really didn't want to leave. Management made it impossible for me to stay however.

Good luck to the folks over there who are reading this. I hope most of you keep your jobs.

I spent four really great years at Surf & The Bone, leaving just before Sea-Comm sold SFM to Next... that was a weird period- I'm sure many are going through all the same anxiety again-there are some really good people there. Hope everything works out for the best.

Are you all so sure this is such a great thing for Wilmington Radio? Doesn't Capital own WILM-tv, which If i'm not mistaken almost completely ignores Wilmington and only gives local weather as an afterthought nestled between Raleigh's news? Besides, WCMC isn't doing great in Raleigh, and it seems that everything else at Capital broadcasting comes second to WRAL-TV and FM. Does Wilmington really need more control from Raleigh?

I have a friend that works for Capital....he's been there for quite some time and say's that it's a great company to work for. I really believe their acquisition of the NextMedia cluster in Wilmington will be really good for the employees there, not to mention Capital is a much more solid company than NextMedia.

I spoke to a person still employed at the artist formerly known as NextMedia Wilmington. Get this...when they purchased those stations from Sea-Comm and Ocean Broadcasting, they paid $24 million for them.

The sale price to Capitol? $12 million.

Translation - NextMedia was losing their ass on that cluster and cut their losses with the sale. Poor management has to be a big reason for that.

Knothead...where are you now? Good to hear from you. We knew each other in Wilmywood.

Are referring to Capitol Broadcasting the same one that owns Mix 101.5 WRAL and WRAL-TV 5 in Raleigh? If so I know they aready own a TV station there in Wilmington, but I have not heard about them buying any radio stations there. In either case if it is them then I know they are a great company.

I'm back in Pittsburgh- I was at KDKA for a year, but I'm out of the biznizz... for now anyway. I never seem to stay out for too long. Drop me a line at knothead23 at hotmail if you don't wanna make your identity known.

Double J, you might want to read the first page of this topic. Capital (of Raleigh) is buying Next in Wilmington. Another small, regional operator grows in the region. It has to be a good thing!

OK my bad I jumped in the middle I went back and read the whole thread. My concern is what's this about 103.1 coming to Rocky Mount(Sharpsburg). What format, power, call letters and owner? I have not heard or read anyhting about that.

Jerry Mac moved back to his old stomping grounds. What made him stick with Next instead of Capitol? And who got his OM & PM positions? Or did Capitol bring someone new in from their staff?

Maybe it wasn't his call. As for who got his OM position, that cluster of stations didn't have an OM before he got there and it ran fine. Maybe Capitol is going that same route.

I know Mark Jacobs (Mark the Shark) is back on WAZO on mid-days. Mark was the PD there before Next unceremoniously dumped him. Damn shame, that guy is really good at what he does. Glad to see him back up there. Hopefully when all the dust has settled, Mark will have his old PD job back if he wants it.

Mr. Heel, I'm not sure what station you were looking at, but WAZO struggled to barely a 3 1/2 share 12 plus, and didn't do so well in the 18-34 demo under "The Shark"...looking at the current numbers, a 5.3 12 plus is the highest that station has been in a long time. And that is with a 3rd morning show reincarnation in the last year, and a new night jock in the last year...And I would venture to guess the 18-34 numbers are certainly better now. Mark may be a solid on-air talent, but if I am running that station, or buying that station, like Capitol is, why would I give the keys to someone who wasn't very successful at it before?
