Next Years NFL Draft on TV

This poses a problem for NBC Sports Network as that's when the final week of the NHL regular season (If not the early rounds of the playoffs) is underway. However CBS Sports Network has offered coverage in the past though

Why they relegated coverage to the radio side ONLY is beyond me

Cheers & 73 ;D

Between ESPN and NFL network the first night had around 8-9 million viewers. I'm sure Fox will jump in this as a,way to drive viewers to the new network.

I'm sure ESPN will have something to say about that.

Also theirs got to be room in Radio City Music Hall for their Sets and some where in their is one for ESPN Radio.
Also NBC has Saturday Afternoon's where Hockey can be shown. Also NBCSP gets to shown day one the of the NHL Draft but not with their own crew.
Know if the NBA/MLB would held their Drafts their too then NBATV could also have a crew live at the NBA Draft and ESPN at the MLB Draft.

No one cares about the MLB draft, because no one cares about college baseball and everyone starts out in the minors anyway.

With the exception of justthenumbers, everyone has conveniently ignored that ESPN bought the rights to televise the NFL Draft (as noted in the fourth paragraph in this B&C article from 2011, their new deal kicks in next year and runs through 2021). Thus the NBC/CBS/Fox/etc. Sports networks can't directly telecast the draft unless they go to Radio City Music Hall, hide under a table, and hope nobody notices - and as most fans would be watching the tried-and-true coverage on ESPN or NFL Network, nobody may notice anyway.

It isn't like the MLB Draft is held in MLB Networks Building or WNBA'S in ESPN'S Building.
ESPN doesn't own Radio City Music Hall so if one of the other networks wants to have a set in their they can talk to teh owners of it and rent a space for their set. Fox Sports 1 can just show NFL Network's feed of it and include their guys in NFL Networks coverage because Jay Glazer and so on already on the Draft coverage from Fox.

ESPN has exclusive rights (save for the league itself on NFL Network) to the NFL Draft. Period.

The NFL gets to decide who televises their activities, not Radio City Music Hall. And they prefer to contract with the network that came up with the idea to televise it in the first place - ESPN. Once that contract expires (2021?), then the bidding process will begin again.

ESPN doesn't own the Rose Bowl so if one of the other networks wants to have their people in their they can talk to teh owners of it and rent a space for their people. Fox can just show the international or ESPN feed of it and include their guys in ESPNs coverage because Charles Davis and so on already on the Rose Bowl coverage from Fox.

Well, it looks like we'll have to start collecting funds to bail Morgan Wick out when he's tossed in the clink for broadcasting the Rose Bowl without expressed written consent. Of course, they'd end up revoking bail when he appears in court and proclaims he did nothing wrong because he "read it on a message board somewhere."

Also, I care about both the MLB draft and college baseball, but perhaps I'm the exception that proves the rule. MLB Network provides plenty of in-depth coverage of their draft to appease the baseball geeks like myself, so I'd say that's more than enough TV coverage without any other sports network getting in on the action.

The difference between the baseball and football drafts is, while both sports' top picks will make big bucks (in baseball, that would be the signing bonus only - minor-league ballplayers get a few hundred dollars a month in salary), the NFL pick has an excellent chance of starting right away. The baseball pick will usually spend 1 to 4 years in minor-league obscurity before being called up to the bigs.

Only uber-hard-core baseball fans will remember the #1 draft pick in baseball, while the football guy will probably have already been a household name thanks to all the college football on TV - especially if he's a QB, running back, or receiver.

Exactly right. That's why the NFL Draft is a big-time TV affair and the MLB Draft is best left to its own channel. St. Louis, for example, is overwhelmingly a baseball town over football, yet we'll hear more about the Rams' fifth-round picks than the Cardinals' first-rounder this summer. Most years it seems that "Mr. Irrelevant" in the NFL Draft gets more press than MLB's number one overall.

And ESPN also broadcasts the NBA Draft (held at the Madison Square Garden Theater), though I think it is/was on TNT as well.

But even though the NFL, NBA, and MLB are headquartered in New York (NHL is in Toronto)...what if one of them decides to hold their draft in Los Angeles? The Nokia Theatre -- home of the Primetime Emmys -- would be the PERFECT venue!

The NBA, at least during the 1990s and early 2000s, used to rotate to different cities each year for its Draft, before settling back down at Madison Square Garden. TNT (and TBS before them) televised the NBA Draft every year before ESPN took over in 2007.

The latest ESPN 30 for 30 film profiles the 1983 NFL Draft, and in particular, the focus was on John Elway and Dan Marino. It was also noted in the film that it was the first televised NFL Draft.

I... thought it was obvious I was making fun of the guy I was replying to... as evidenced by the preserved typos and grammatical errors...

I wouldn't be surprised if the 2014 NFL Draft attracts more viewers in it's time period than any single broadcast or cable program in its time period.

Pro football is white-hot, and not only will it continue to dominate Sunday-afternoon and Sunday-night ratings(and may do so for Monday-night TV ratings this Fall, although "Dancing With The Stars" may put up a strong challenge), but if the NFL Network can get into as many homes as ESPN, the NFL Network's Thursday-night games will probably win the ratings race there against all broadcast and cable competition as well.

Very obvious, my friend. I thought my unfunny humor was obvious as well. C'est la vie. Mind those unnecessary ellipses, by the way. I don't want you called out for any errors in sentence structure.

I may yet agree with you on this, Joseph. Your "if" is a big one right now, but not as big as I first thought. As this article noted, "Each week of the 2012 Thursday Night Football schedule, NFL Network’s game telecast was the day’s most-watched program on cable television." Fans love their football and will seek it out no matter where NFL Network is located on their cable systems.

My out-there speculation involves the draft, at least the first round, being televised by whatever network has neither the previous or next Super Bowl. So this year it would have been NBC, then CBS next year, then Fox.
